RE: TBM Shock Jet
ORIGINAL: seflyer the rudder has very little effectiveness. Kevin Speaking of landings, I can't seem to get the Shok to flare unless it is moving pretty fast. With full flaps and some power still on, it will flatten out and touch on all 3 at the same time. I would like to be able to go to idle, get the nose up and touch on the mains. My cg is exactly as shown on the instructions. Later; D.W. |

Set up a crow, it will ride the mains all day.:D

RE: TBM Shock Jet
I found the CG in the manual to be a little conservative. I always take my planes and fly a 45 degree up line and roll inverted and see what happens. If she dives towards ground real fast..you're probably nose heavy. I initally had two batteries and about 5oz of lead in nose to get to recommened balance point. I have now removed the lead and am still a tad nose heavy (for my liking). I have no problem with flaring...I actually have found a sweet spot so I can touch the mains and hold the nose off (ride a wheely) for as long as I want..funfun.

RE: TBM Shock Jet
How about snaps? Surely someone has tried it?

Throw for up elevator = almost touch the bottow of rudder.

RE: TBM Shock Jet
Highhorse, It does a negative snap much better that positive snap. The fun is in trying to get it to stop after only 1 rotation. IT will do a 1.5 Snap just as nice as you please. And 2 snaps are great. It seams to wind up and then go. Cuban 8s with a negative snap on the first inverted 45 and push outside to the positive snap on the 2 45 down line.
Have Fun |
RE: TBM Shock Jet
the spins are nice scale spins, not flat. so yes it does does spin, recovery is just a matter of centering the sticks. did a few snaps but could not explore all of its aerobatic potential as there was five jets in the air all the time. slow flight is a lot of fun as well, with 85 degrees of flap it takes some power to move but flies so slow I think you could walk out and grab it.
I went with the p-70 as I had it and the weight penalty is very minimal, plus fuel burn is much less as full power is not needed. my flight times were 7 minutes with a fuel burn of 30-35 ozs. per flight. Kevin |
RE: TBM Shock Jet
as for cg, I need to move it back, roll it invereted and it takes a lot of elevator to hold it. flare is great and wheelies are sure to follow. Kevin

RE: TBM Shock Jet
Wow, it sounds like when i get back to the good ol' US of A I need to play with the CG on mine.
I have mine set up per the instructions and while it lands and handled pretty good in the air and slows up ok for landing, And (being I am an areobatics guy from long ago) I am wanting to do more than it is able to do at the moment with the stock setup. seflyer, did you encounter many (If any) issues shoehorning the P70 in there> I have one laying around that I will put into the ShockJet and return the P60 to my Rafale and maiden that! Do you have any pictures you can post/send showing the installation? (Particularly the mounting of the turbine as the stock mount is to wide for the fuse!) Did you remove the bottom of the engine bay as someone did in an earlier post on page 2 or 3 of this forum? Thanks in advance George |

I will try and get some pics of the install later today, I did have to cut the jetcat mounting ears off the strap so it is not good for anything else now. and i removed most of the forward bulkhead so i could have the fod screen in place. and had to narrow the mounting rails so it would slide in. I did not remove the sides of the plane or the lower panel under the turbine but did removed part of the upper floor above the turbine. Kevin
added a few pics, the first shows the rear view, snug but fully contained. the second, shows where the rails had to be narrowed for the mount strap to clear the third, shows the forward bulkhead removed and upper deck plate removed back a ways to clear the top of the top of the turbine and allow fod screen install. RE: TBM Shock Jet
Ohhh, that's perfect. Thanks man.
Looks like you almost have/had a little wood smoke as well as your normal smoke system!! [X(] I have some of the Foil tape that they use on the bottom of the fuse behind the turbine. I think I'll be lining the engine bay as much as I can before installing the P70 in! I think I'll also make a concerted effort to install the extra fuel I have in. 6 minute flights at full throttle plus taxi out and in again means I end up with about 1/4 to 1/3rd of a standard 50 oz load left, but the p70 I know is much thirstier than the p60! Putting the P70 in will also help out moving the balance point back with out having to use extra useless weight to! I had the p70 in a Reaction 54 but could never get it to slow down very much for landing - even using full flaps. I think the flaps on this will be more than adequate for slowing it down! Thanks George |
RE: TBM Shock Jet
yep, after the first run up there was a slight discoloration of the lower surface, i then placed a small piece of adhesive backed foil under the turbine and no further issues.
the p-60 has the same fuel burn rate as the p-70 at full throttle but you don't have to run wide open with the p-70. I asked Bob Wilcox about this at Fresno jets and he said it sounded logical. my flight timer is set at 7 minutes and I land with approx 20 ounces remaining in the main. I may also add the extra tank just so I can fly longer. Kevin |
RE: TBM Shock Jet
Kevin,
I saw you fly your jet at Fresno. Did you fly at full throttle at all? Do you think the airframe can handle prolonged full throttle passes with the P-70? Ken |
RE: TBM Shock Jet
just on the vertical uplines was I at full throttle, I made one pass about 3/4 throttle. the fun factor in the plane for me is its slow flying and graceful aerobatics. I made six flights over two days just getting the feel for it, I put its first flight Friday then just had some fun with it. I don't think the extra power will make that big wing go any faster, I just wanted those cool two foot take off rolls to vertical climb out. :D
also going to use the plane for letting my daughter Jamie get her waiver. she soloed two years ago at age 8 and has been flying my 1/3 scale cub for the last year. this was her first jet rally and she had a lot of fun and made some good friends, young and old alike. Kevin |
RE: TBM Shock Jet
I just got mine up on the wheels last night. Everything is installed in the fuse that need to go there. Turbine, tank, radio gear etc. I have a PST J600R in it. I don't have the tail plane on yet but the elevator and rudder servos are installed. It seems to be real heavy on the nose when I lift it and pivot on the mains. I have a 6 cell Nicad pack for the turbine and a 4-cell NimH Sub-C pack for the radio mounted in the nose. Where did you guys mount your batteries?
Also, on the main gear, does the straight edge of the legs go towards the nose? I only saw one pic in the "instructions". Thanks Bob |
RE: TBM Shock Jet
I am running two 2700 ni-mh packs one is in the nose and the other is sitting on top of the fuel tank to move the cg back a little. I might go back in and clean up the radio area a little bit later on but for now its getting flown. ecu batt is in the nose too. Kevin

RE: TBM Shock Jet
I've got a 12 oz low profile Oval shaped tank sitting on top of the DuBro 50 oz.

RE: TBM Shock Jet
the straight side of the mains is forward on mine, but the wheel is centered on the bolt pattern, so whatever looks best to you.
Kevin |
RE: TBM Shock Jet
I was hoping it wasn't so I could move the mains forward a little to aid in rotation at takeoff. Does yours seem real heavy on the nose??
By comparison, my Boomerang Elan seems much lighter on the nose wheel and it weighs 7 lbs more than the Shockjet. The tank is forward of the CG so it's going to be even worse with 62oz. of fuel in it. Bob |

Meesh, Here are a couple of photos of our prototype. When we put this one together we did not have the wheels you recieved with the kit so it has BVM wheels on it. These wheels will be heaver than yours. As you can see with the BFT full of fuel the weight at the nose wheel is 1.56 lbs. If your is a lot more than this move some stuff around. Our gear has the straight side toward the tail also.
thanks |
RE: TBM Shock Jet
Heres an unedited video of my P-80 powered shock jet from Super Jet South this past weekend. We were playing around with the video camera. 75 oz. of fuel and 24 oz. of smoke. You can also see the crow set up in the wing.

RE: TBM Shock Jet
rotation is not an issue with this plane, with teh 10-15 wind at Fresno I was getting 2-15 foot take off runs. I will do a scale nose weight measurement tonight.

RE: TBM Shock Jet
Bill,
That's what I was looking for. I have a scale lik that so I'll be able to check it. Thanks! Bob |
