RE: Another Skymaster Viper
ORIGINAL: OttoKranz Yet another viper installation, this is my child :) in random pictures. I'm very near to the maiden flight (I thought this also one month ago...). I'll post some more pictures when all is really finished. Thanks you all for the precious help!!! 8 what's that funky PCB in pic #3 ? Nice installation! I'm almost finished - fitted all connectors to the wings and fuse yesterday (air, lights and servos) and finished my new wing attachment (glued a piece of M5 wire in the wing, now the wing fixes to the fuse with a nut) Waiting for the weather to get better.. RE: Another Skymaster Viper
Nice isn't it? :) It's a full programmable (from PC) circuit for the lights.
Look here http://translate.google.it/translate...chede%2520luci I took this one as, at this time, I only use Sandor landing lights http://translate.googleusercontent.c...7_V4G7nDPhMDYQ Please, post some pictures, I don't like the way wings are attached to the fuz... Tks! 8 |
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
Otto,
you might just have saved me some soldering/programming time of my own ;) I'll post some pics tonight, but in short: - I drilled a hole right next to the wing-tube in the wing (in between the wing-tube and the spar/former that makes the gear-box) - one one wing, there was material behind, on the other almost none, so I glued two dowels in place - drilled a hole in the fuse-sides, next to the wingtube, through the ply reinforcement ( - glued M5 wire ends in the wings/dowels with epoxy I now can pull the wing to the fuse with one single nut, access through the wheel-wells. I might drill a hole in the M5 thread for some security wire, or just slip some fuel-line over it after tightening the nut so it can never loosen itself Advandages: - attachment in the center of the wing, near the wing-tube, so in a minimal flex-area (neutral line). Won't work itself loose - wing is pulled against the fuse, no gaps Pics will follow :) |
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
What's wrong with the wing fixing as it comes? i've not heard of any not being hysol'd for about a year

RE: Another Skymaster Viper
Don't like a wing-fixing out of center.
Plus, I had to do one on my new right wing myself, this was easier ;) What's hard about drilling two holes and glueing in a threaded rod-end? Easier than replacing the gear :p |

RE: Another Skymaster Viper
lol no worries, just curious.
My wing is that stiff to get on and off, that i doubt the fixing would make a difference anyway lol |

ORIGINAL: Duncan lol no worries, just curious. My wing is that stiff to get on and off, that i doubt the fixing would make a difference anyway lol I know what you mean, there is exactly one posision in which the tube fits in my right wing ;) The main reason I choose for the alternate fixing, is that I use those airpower air-couplings, and I'd hate to loose air because of a loose fit wing. Now everything is tightly pulled together. I'm sure the other ways work well as well, but peace of mind gets more important the bigger (and more $$) the jets get ;) Hans |

ORIGINAL: Duncan What's wrong with the wing fixing as it comes? i've not heard of any not being hysol'd for about a year Duncan perhaps it's in most cases a "no problem" (in italian we say a "non problema":), not sure you use it in english) but we all know about the lacking of glue in many parts of our vipers. When I thanks you all about all the help you have done to me, this is because I've read all the 38 pages of these thread [&:]:D, therefore... About this problem look here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=8743967 and here (text and picture 6) http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=9062463 Ciao Alessandro |

ORIGINAL: NightSwan Otto, you might just have saved me some soldering/programming time of my own ;) Reversing Sandor: why do it difficult? when it can be so easy? :D Thanks for the explanations, waiting for pics! A |

Here's some pics:
Wing, with connectors and glued-in piece of M5 stainless wire: http://sandbox.flexlogic.nl/mbpics/v...wing-cons2.JPG Different angle: http://sandbox.flexlogic.nl/mbpics/v..._wing-cons.JPG If I could have gotten my drill inside the fuse, the holes and dowel would have lined up better. Hole and location in fuse. It goes through the ply doubler that is in place. http://sandbox.flexlogic.nl/mbpics/v...ld/qq_hole.JPG All comes together: http://sandbox.flexlogic.nl/mbpics/v...q_together.JPG On the inside (forgot to take the picture), simply a washer and a nut, and the wing neatly gets pulled against the fuse. Simple mod, makes me feel good :D Hans |
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
I did the same with my hawk wing attachment. I use a simple wing nut to attach through the wheel well and really like the way this works.
Regards Al |
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
Forgot to mention, if you use enough glue, the wire is glued to both the main spar, and the wing-tube, so it has a place to pull on.
Maybe in the future, skymaster will pre-drill the holes for us ;) Hans |
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
Maybe i can make that also on my Viper, i was also thinking to make it the same way and Sandor told me also the same.
I had almost the same on my/Ali's L-39, i glued the nut into the wing and then easely open the geardoors and put the screw in. I will see,i can think about this all the next week and and then make the change when we are back from Floridajets. Regards Ron |
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
Hans,
Very nice modification to secure the wing! are you still planning to use the original secure method in conjunction? Gonzalo |
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
Hi Gonzalo,
on one side perhaps, but on the other (right) side the original mount is not in the wing, so I think I'll only use the washer and a piece of tubing for security. Hans |
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
Hans,
just perfect and very simple. And is also "Ali certified" !!!:) I'm going to do it this night... Thanks Alessandro |
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
Yep it makes sense to do it, cheers all

Wings attached to the fuse, sequencer programmed:

RE: Another Skymaster Viper
Hans,
Nice mod. Did a similar mod on one of my warbirds, 3W F8F Bearcat, but in that case used a 5/16-18 (about 8mm) nylon bolt ... with the head on the "outside" of the root rib, threaded end stuck out and went thru the fuse side, and secured with a nylon wing nut inside the fuse. Advantage of nylon was: 1) does not loosen up during flight (admittedly a big problem on gassers, less so on jets) and 2) could shear off in a cosmically hard landing (don't ask me how I know this actually works...) so that more extensive damage is not done as the wing rotates around the tube. Dave |
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
very nice :D
|
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
I would speed up that retraction and extension time, you might just find yourself needing to get the feet in or our quickly and you are going to be hosed.....
|
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
Dave,
still some tweaking to do ;) I was glad I finally figured out the airpower sequencer logic  Hans |
RE: Another Skymaster Viper
I am hearing that there may be a batch of wing tubes that are not made to the correct specs. If your wing tube weighs less than 220grams, tell Skymaster & they will send you a new one.
