RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Hey Mike
How can you start on the kit if you are out of the country? Oh well, hope things are going good. If anyone has any real questions about the real A10 , mr. Warren being an ex pilot of the A10 would be a good source of information to go to. What was it, 7 years 1200 hrs. ? I thought those were refueling caps. They look like the one on my old CBR 929. But how many do you need? You have the air refueling, and the one on the wheel fairing also. Wouldnt that make 6? If you think about it, they would make good targets for the enemy. take care chris |

Crew tag under front canopy area. I can customize these with your names or whoevers as well as all decals for the squadron you would like.
Battery access decals below it. Warning engine run up , taxi , or flight etc. decal just in front of battery access. There is also a decal that goes on the ladder door and i think you will be able to find that one on the decal sheet. Ejection seat warning decal top left of ladder door. chris |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
I think that covers most of the decals, but here are some useful links where you can find a ton of pics for any other reference.

I have been thinking about how to mount the flaps so that they are correctly aligned. Here is how I am attempting to do it and I will report back with the results soon.
First, the hinges were glued to the flaps. Then, I tacked glued a balsa block to the wing with silicone. I put the flap in place, and marked the block where the hinge should go. Then, for good measure, I put a drill bit through to align the pivots. I removed the flap and lined the wing hinge up with the balsa block and glued it in place. |

I've just received a PM from Chris to confirm I had hinged the Flaps correctly so thought i'd show what I did here.
I cut a piece of the flap skin away to ensure the hinge was flush with the wood former. There is a fillet of glue that prevents the hinge sitting flat against the wood when butted against the inside of the flap skin so I filed most of this out. It doesn't matter as I was applying more glue in this area anyway. The hinges were scuffed before gluing;) Edit: The hinges are supposed to be flush with the outside of the skin to ensure that the 2 hinge parts don't rub together. However on my kit, the inner flaps will not have this problem as there will be a space between the hinges attached to the wing and those attached to the flaps (I haven't checked the outer flaps yet). This is a good thing as I can use washers in between them, when I put the hinge bolts in, which will ensure free movement. I will post pics of this when I have the other hinge glued in place and the assembly is complete. |

No regret of getting this Kit. |

Chris,
My main gear and struts should arrive soon. Do you have any pics of how the main gear is mounted? How much of the wing skin should be cut away? Do you mount the gear through the skin or are there plates underneath? |

Hey Sic
In this pic, i had put some white tape on the area that needs to be cut out. You will need to cut out the center portion of the mount just to where it has the recess. It will need to be cut out about an inch forward toward the leading edge into the wing area in order for the retract air cylinder to slide up in the inside of the wing. You can start out by just cutting out a small amount until you can get the cylinder to slide in. When you get the retracts you will notice the bolting flange will sit on this u shaped mount while the body portion of the retract slides pretty snug into the recess area you cut out. You may need to file or dremel out a notch so the barbed air fitting will clear and it will all slide in a bit easier. The mount area consists of glass, carbon fiber, 1/4" ply , carbon fiber and glass that are all sandwiched together. There are also 2 ribs that strattle the mount in this section. All this makes for a very strong mount that will hold up to hard landings. You can bolt the retract in with regular wood screws going into the u shaped ply. Hold off on cutting the wheel fairing for the retracts and wheels. I will send you a template when i send out your other gear. I will also send you out all the screws you will need for the build. You will need to angle the strut and retract in towards the fuse just a tiny bit when it is in the up position in order for it to clear nicely into the wheel fairing. You will notice that after you do this, when in the down position, the wheels look pigeon toed. When they are down you will need to rotate the strut in the socket so that they are staight forward. After this ,they will look a little angled in the up position. I am waiting for the supplier to get back in on wed. and i will order yours and Tommys retracts. I will pm you with the details. chris |

RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
I know, I know. Those things have been haunting me on how i want to finish them out. Good news though, i did work on them a bit today and i will be working on them this week until i get them finished.
Did you get my message the other day? What type of paint did you use on your A10? chris |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Chris I was able to get the video up on youtube.com
Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pALPC6EDR8k The video is of the 2 fans running up on half dead batteries but still ran strong. To all that dont know my setup is: Hoaye 5" fans Scorpion 4035-630kv motors (2) 10S setups I'm using Turnigy 6S & 4S 5000mah 35C Getting 10.5lbs of thrust & 3600watts at 90amps from each fan. Ty |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
For anyone who needs to buy the struts, the nose strut is the Robart 661L. I have just waited for ages for mine to come from Tower Hobbies (waiting for stock to arrive) and I have ordered the wrong one[:@]

Your nose retract is suppose be in on tues but i can order you the right strut if you want and send it out with the rest. Thats a bummer. Just let me know. thanks chris |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Yes Chris, I did. Neither Tower's or Robart's websites are very clear. It's not a problem I will just send it back to Tower for exchange. There might be a small delay again though as the 661L is out of stock now[:o]

RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Yeah Chris I had to edit it and it actually changed the file to wmv. which I think is smaller than the avi. files, it went from 60mb to 3mb. I will be charging the batteries and running them again.

RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Wow,
I have just had a response from Tower Hobbies regarding the strut and they are sending me the correct one, free of charge, and I don't have to return the one they have already sent me. Bear in mind that they did send me the one I ordered, although the pictures on their website are a little misleading. :D Awesome customer service. |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Now that is some great customer service. So i guess they had one in stock?
I should be recieving your other retract mechanism tomorrow and I am getting ready to see if your wheels and brakes came in from Tam in a few minutes. I think i will be needing your address soon. I think i still have it, but my emails are so cluttered, i may need you to send it again. keep you posted. hows the build coming? thanks chris |
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
I am intersted in building one of these with our fan system. What is the typical weight of this plane? Dual 10S setups would yield us about 26 pounds of installed thrust (12S would be well over 30 pounds). Does anyone have one completed that they want to sell?
|
RE: CGRCJets A-10 Build Thread
Hi Jim
The airframe is about 10 lbs. Depending on the setup you are looking at 17-25 lbs. Do you have a website link? chris |
