I spend much too much time reading RCU threads and searching for my next jet project. I need to get a job to support this habit.

RE: What do most folks here do?

I spent ten years in the Navy as a crypto geek before I got smart and went to dental school. Tried private practice for 3 years while staying in the Naval Reserve but went back on active duty with the Air Force for the next 20 years, doing root canals and forensic identification all over the world. Retired in 1996 and took my old AF job as a civilian contractor until 2005 when I retired again, this time for good. Gave Uncle Sam over 40 years. Now I build during the winter and drive around the good ol’ USA during the summer, visiting our 32 living grand kids (and our first great grand child) and going to all kinds of jet events, meeting new folks and renewing old friendships. It’s not easy living on a fixed income now, but everything is paid for and I have some fun money in the budget for my jets.
Did CL in the mid 50's to late 60's, built my first RC proportional radio in 1969 (Heathkit) flying sport, got into DF's in mid 80's and then into turbines in 2000. I still scratch build. Still fly sport and some electrics but my Boomer XL with the JC Rhino is my primary flyer.

Roy,

That was a great read! Congrats on a life well-spent!
Thanks, I plan on being around when this great grand daughter gets married and has a baby. My mother is still alive so this little girl has a living great great grandmother. If my mother can do it, so can I. I hope to still be scratch building and flying in the next 20 years, also. This hobby never gets old, it makes you feel young.

RE: What do most folks here do?

20 years and 20 seconds in an Air Force career. Started out changing oil in trucks at good old Holloman AFB NM as a Transportation Officer (all 130 lbs of me). Got selected for pilot training and flew F-4s, T-33s, T-38s, T-41 (dont laugh, it was the most difficult instructing job I ever had) and the T-43. Retired with about 4000 hours and 40000 touch and goes. Got stuck in the instructor track for most of my career but I dont regret it. Instructing was a fun job as I got to teach a skill I dearly love. Nothing give me more personal pride to see one of my old students who "Done good". One of the funniest stories just occurred. One of my old FAIPs (first assignment IP or a guy who got a T38 IP slot as his first assignment) found me on facebook. He said he got to thinking about me when he heard a song on the radio that was something like "I think I'm in trouble now". He went on to tell me about a time I sent him home from a 4 ship formation training mission for screwing up. I would send the guys home if they violated the mission rules to hammer home the importance of formation integrity. He said as he was headed back to base single ship he sang the song all the way home and was still singing it when I walked in my office after the mission. Didnt yell at him as the shame of going home early was enough. Guess I didnt do any permanent damage as he went of to be an F-15E pilot, doing the Mudhen OTE and then flying several missions during Gulf War I. He retired from the Air Force several years ago also. After the Air Force I went to work for United Airlines and have flown the B-727 (engineer), A-319/320, B-737, and B-777. Currently a A-320 First Officer where I plan on remaining until I retire. Now it's about quality of life not the money. I've flown models since I was big enough to turn around (control line) or about 50 years. I love it dearly as it offers technical challenges, new skills (composites, fiberglass, electronics, etc) and has provided me with some of the best friends I have ever had, (MolarMender was my dentist at Mather AFB). I am alive because of things I learned flying models. I had elevator flutter on a T-43 (B-737) during a maintenance check flight and knew what it was from my modeling experiences. It was so violent it jerked the yoke from the hands of the guy flying. I currently fly a Philip Avonds F-15 & F-16. FB Mig-21 and a YA F-22. Just ventured out into new territory when I purchased a ESM PC-21 which I plan to fly as an electric complete with a scale 5 bladed prop.

Sure has been a lot of water under the bridge since those early days at Mather. But that is usually what happens when your having fun doing what you enjoy doing.

RE: What do most folks here do?

Ok was shown a cox pwered free flight model when I was about 6, my uncle made me a rubber powered tissue covered model. For some reason that was enough, I was intrigued.

Always always struggled with budget, though, moved from these free flighters to a single channel Macgregor DB Tyro, built it badly when I was 11 though my dad did the wings! It never flew more than 100 metres, the engine would start every time in the garden, never on the flying field!!!

I then threw my impatience and some little money at early artf's but all did not go well and was sold up.

Then my new wife allowed me a helicopter purchase, and I got a completely ready to go Hirobo Shuttle. Months later turned it into a Schluter and started a few years later with some other fixed wing stuff.

Saw the JPX and Starjet at Long Marston by accident. Hooked, line and sinker, exactly what I wanted. Started saving as my 40th was due in a few years, and got a Wren 54 kit, BVM T33 6 years ago.

Poor time spent on sticks meant attrition at the field and I wrote off most of my fixed wing fleet in a season, sad to say the cash was not there, so one day my wife suggested I was crap at this and to sell up. Wrongly I did, though I kept the T33.

Now junior has gone to University, I have time, and have more patience and tolerance, so gettting back in to it now, the goal is to save and expend enough to get the T 33 ready for my 50th!!!

Have just built a heli to get me in the groove again.

Network applications engineer (partly sales engineer) for a national (US) telecommunications company. After 13 years at the last company doing unappreciated IT work, seeing the bonuses from this company is nice!

Started flying in high school and took hiatus until 6 years ago. Started up in electrics again. Last month acquired Boomerang Sprint with Wren 54 SS, CD F-22, and a Wren 100.

Funny, Duke/Aero65 told me 22 years ago that he needed to get me flying jets, and now he is getting me turbine proficient. Thanks Duke!

Hi,

Actor/Singer/Director/Teacher. I run a non-profit theatre arts training company for young, aspiring actors. A high-school kid made a short film about her school's band department and their collaboration with my company. Very satisfying, fulfilling work.

RE: What do most folks here do?

About your question . It is not what people do or how much they have but how much they are ablle to part with to enjoy this hobby. It is not only about affording it ,it has to also do with the ablility to fly these complex machines . I have spent quite a few dollars before I had any success and I have lost a few jets in the process and it can be costly.

But like some one else said do what you can afford and do it with your ability fo fly . No use buying a 20k jet and you cannot fly it . Giving it to someone else to fly is not an option . Most of my lost jets came from trusting some else with my jets . If you are ready for jets you should already have the ability to build troubleshoot and fly your jet. You will get the most joy from doing this and fear would not be following you around

I wish you all the best in the hobby
Take it easy and do not rush.

I started modeling when I was 11. I flew control line with my best friend when we were kids. I started flying R/C in 1969. Flying ducted fan jets in 1989 and on to turbines in 2002. I'm still flying with my best friend from control line days and now we fly turbine powered jets. I restore full size warbirds to keep me busy.

12 years in the Army, started out working on 64s then went to flight school to fly them. Past jobs include ALSE, Safety, flight operations, and now I'm a 64D instructor teaching Americans, UAE, Singapore, Egypt, Britsh, and just recent the first German. I fly 3d helis large 3d planes and now scale jets. I wish the Army paid more because I have 2 more jets I would love to have.[:-]
