What's the secret?!
OK,
What is the secret to gluing in canopies perfectly? I'm about to glue in one that is over 2ft long and want it to look 'crisp' both inside and out. I did hear one guy say that the secret is to use laminating resin?? Anyone tried that? So, go on, tell all and show us final versions of your handiwork! :) Cheers, Mark |

RE: What's the secret?!
something that really helps is 5 min epoxy to just "TACK" in place.. then use the formula glue to allow it to setup but not move ;)

I use oderless zap and make spot tacks all around the canopy. Then I use Formula 560 with a modified tip from ADC and fill in the rest all the way around.

RE: What's the secret?!
I've used canopy glue and E6000 with sucess, but in your case Mark i'd get someone else to do it ;):D
The thread that Jason started asking the same had some great ideas. One was using bits of balsa, cyano'd to the fuz to hold the canopy in place. Dunc |

Mark The balsa blocks glued to the fibreglass to support the canopy perfectly in place works very well. I then used a thin tube pushed the canopy glue tip and slid it along between the canopy and frame while squeezing to glue it in. Jason |
RE: What's the secret?!
the secret is.....
use small neodym magnets from both sides to hold the canopy in place :D http://www.rc-network.de/forum/attac...4&d=1259704290 http://www.rc-network.de/forum/attac...9&d=1260214586 |
RE: What's the secret?!

RE: What's the secret?!
Mark, E6000 is what the US call Goop. You can pick it up at craft shops. I have a tube of jasons, do you want it lol.
It will be back in your workshop next time I see you J ;) |
RE: What's the secret?!
AWESOME tip, made wading through the tripe worth it today!
Thanks Eagledriver! |
RE: What's the secret?!
Mark,
Steven has the hot setup. The magnets allow the canopy to be held, glued and wiped down all in one step. The magnets are SO strong, the canopy can never move. In my 35+ years of modeling, I've tried everything and nothing works like this no matter what glue you use. However the formula 560 works the best since it can be cleaned up with water. The results are great. No mess, no runs, just a perfect looking canopy, inside and out. The .25X1/2" long magnets seem to be the best overall size. You can order them cheap from National Imports. They are the least expensive that I have found for the magnets. How are the pylons coming along? Dan |

Steven...Great idea!

RE: What's the secret?!
Dan,
Going to get me some of them thar magnets! What's the best technique with thus method? Apply glue, place canopy in position and apply magnets? Or, apply magnets to canopy and then apply glue around edges bit by bit? What's the best glue that allows clean up with water. I tried one once that supposedly cleaned with water - didn't seem to touch the stuff :-( As for the pylons, I'm hoping to get on them soon - probably this weekend. Been trying to get a fair bit of time on the Futura. Mark |
RE: What's the secret?!
Been doing the magnet thing for a while. It is by far the best way. Even for hard to reach areas , you can attach the magnets then slide them down to where you need them.

RE: What's the secret?!
That is an awesome idea!! I wish I'd known about it last week, when I did my viper.
I'll definately use magnets on my next build Duncan |

Mark,
In case you are interested I have used this company to buy magnets from and the service was prompt. http://www.first4magnets.com/ Geoff. P.S. no connection with the company apart from being a satisfied customer. |

RE: What's the secret?!
The best stuff I've found is Formula 560 Canopy Glue and it does wipe clean with water...
I've always got my magnets from here: http://e-magnetsuk.com/ Cheers, Alex |

Wow, great idea Dan, I am on the National Imports website right now. What size magnets you recommend?
Thanks! Shaz |
RE: What's the secret?!
Mark
The strongest magnets I have found: http://www.giantcod.co.uk/strong-rar...-p-403841.html You can't get them off each other without sliding one sideways, incidently makes a good extra attachement on the Habu canopy, I just use one on the original magnet and push it into the foam. Mike |
