Well, got the boomer out today with my new K-170. All I can say is that this is one sweet engine! Perfect starts exceptional power and fast spool up. All I could get today was three flights (I was flying at a prop field lol and we all know how long those guys can fly).
Anyway, thanks Kingtech for bringing us such a great engine at prices well below the competition. Can't wait to see the 220. I've got a Skymaster F4 Phantom waiting for that. Andy |

Just maidened my Skymaster F4 Phantom with a Kingtech K-170. The engine performed flawelessly! The power and sound this turbine puts out is awsome. Lighter weight higher power. Gotta love it. Here is a vid that Bomber Bob took..

Barry:D I had already put over 25 flights on this turbine in my boomerang and now only two flights on the F4. Before, I had a Rhino in both. The power this turbine puts out exceeds the Rhino by at least 10%. I love the sound and power it produces. One thing to note, because the K-170 is shorter in length as the Rhino AND weighs less, I was able to move the turbine back on the Skymaster F4 allowing for less counter balancing weight in the nose. Result - Much less overall weight and wing loading - resulting in a better flying jet. I can see this jet becoming my favorate jet to fly. |

Andy, I thought the k-170 weighed more than the Rhino. 3.5lbs vs 3.1lbs.
O just got my k-170 and it looks great. Fit and finish is top notch. |

Hi,
I had an interesting experience at KJ with a K-170. I had this engine fitted into a Yellow A/C F-15, which I know is way too much power (if there is such a thing) for this airframe. The airframe can take it without problem, but since the stock pipe has not been tested with such a big engine, I decided to turn the engine down to what we calculated to be around 30 pounds of thrust. During the initial start-up attempts, I couldn't get the engine to ramp up. After much frustration, a friend (Andy Andrews) pointed out that the connections at the ECU were all back-asswards. After helping me get situated, we got the engine started and noticed something very interesting during the purging of the UAT. We noticed that even at full-throttle, the engine would bog and sag but not quit when unbelievably large bubble streams went through it. That's not the end... Later, on the second flight of the bird, I used quite a bit more high-throttle settings than I intended to (while having a LOT of fun imitating the full-scale F-15's accelerating through Mach-1 while in a 90 degree vertical climb) and ended up draining the tanks. Right before the gear-pass, we all noticed a very loud coughing/burping noise coming from the plane. Most thought it was a compressor stall, but I thought it was my pipe possibly collapsing and immediately hollered a MAYDAY and headed for the deck. The engine continued to make a few noises as I set up and landed safely. As I taxied back, the engine quit. I retrieved the plane, fully expecting to find a collapsed pipe and melted interior. Instead what I found was a completely empty UAT and only residual fuel in either main tank. What we determined (and later duplicated on the ground) was that the noises we heard during the flight were bubbles going through. Instead of quitting, the engine was basically screaming at me to get the bird down before she quit. There were some there who were skeptical when they heard about it, but we did it again and again on the deck. Even at full-throttle, relatively large bubble streams wouldn't kill the engine! Not too shabby.....;) |

Very interested, I also notice the compressor wheel looks smaller than the Rhino but makes more power?

Sean. That's funny because my 140 did the same thing. I was doing the initial running on a stand which slopes downward and the pick up started getting out of the fuel. It spit and sputtered for several seconds and I noticed huge amounts of air bubbles. Just one little air bubble wont kill these things - :D

Has any one tried a 6.6 volt life battery with a kero start kingtech ? I am just installing and balancing with a limited amount of time before our annual fly in, and only have a pair of 3600MAH 30C life's here. ant input appreciated. |

According to Barry, you need a 3s A123/LiFe pack. Voltage on a 2s pack is too low. I am using a 3s A123 pack.

The info is in the kingtech and diesel thread. There he was recomending a 3s life or the 7cell nicad but that was for the deisel starts. For what it's worth I just got putting 3 more flights / starts on my 140 using a 2s liion 4300mah without any problem.

Yesterday I was using this jet as my test stand [8D] I was surprise to see 35 to 36# on a simple fish scale @ 123,000 Rpm temp 560. Now a second look at the mounted engine on this test bed hmmm,, :)
