Actually, the fuel was vaporized in the experiment. It was the vaporized (evaporated) fuel in the flask that was being ignited. The only thing missing was compression, which in my opinion (and supported by the research I've done over the past few days), plays a role on timing (specifically expediting) combustion in a nitro engine, but isn't required to create the chain reaction (repeated burn cycles without outside intervention).

And yes, I would like an electron microscope. Would anyone happen to have one to spare?

Well, I certainly drove the discussion away from the original thread, didn't I? The thread really belongs in the engine discussion forum as it's just interesting (or boring) for the plane folks (plain folks too, I guess).
