Could I just have the header but also rig it so I have back pressure?

ya but you will most likely loose power, and it will run too lean. possibly you will shoot flames because it will be free flowing. also it may be bad on the motor.

shorter=more torque in the middle, longer = more top end HP., It is like a real car in this aspect, to make torque you want some back pressure, but at hi-rpm's you need much less to ensure full exhausting of gasses because remember your engine is a pump, more RPM's need more air in and more out.
the length of the pipe has nothing to do with backpressure. its the pressure wave and the length of the pipe is what controls this. a shorter pipe has a higher powerband, and a longer pipe has a lower powerband.
Believe whatever you like.

Eric is right, the massive increase in exhaust flow will cause the engine to lean out. A bigger concern would be the cold air and the hot piston top. If you want to run open, use a legnth of pipe or tube attahced to the header to keep from warping the piston top. Unless the rest of the engine has been modified to take advantge of the flow it won't do much, if any, good and it will MURDER your low-end to mid-range torque.

it has nothing to do with pressure, thats what the stinger is for. if you dont believe me get a pipe that you can adjust the length and run it out all the way then in all the way. you will see a varyation in the powerband. the powerband is a result of the pipe shape, and has little to do with amount of pressure, although less backpressure will result in less low end.

ok then...so why does my mousse can muffler work so well....it has monsterous torque AND power....therres nothing in the pipe just the extra long stinger and the tube i used to put the blue coupler on...i also extended the fuel line from the tank and modified a fuel filter so its now a one way valve..
