flywheel/collet problem....

I have a Fantom FR15 engine....went to put the MIP lightweight flywheel on, but ran into a problem. I put on the collet washer, then the collet, then slid the flywheel on. The problem is that the threads on the crankshaft dont go in far enough for the clutch nut to tighten against the flywheel. It actuall takes 4 washers behind the collet in order for the clutch nut to tighten on the fhywheel. Is this bad? Is there a correct way to fix this problem? thanks

is your shaft too long? what you are describing sound like you put the clutch nut on but you cant tighten it enough to hold the flywheel? shorten the shaft if thast the problem just take a dremel and cut away a few threads

No that is not the problem. I have elaready cut the shaft using the AE cutoff nut. The problem is that the non threaded section of the crank (where the collet and flywheel sit) is longer than the width of the flywheel/collet, so the clutch nut runs out of threads before it even hits the flywheel. The only way I can solve this is by putting 4 or more washers behind the collet....but that just seems like way too many to me. I have been told to use no more than 2 washers, but even 2 washers isnt enough. Any other ideas? Thanks

There's alot of engines that need the shaft shortened in order to fit the GT. Just drop the engine in a zip lock sandwich bag and seal it. Then push the shaft through and put tape around to seal the bag, thread on a regular nut so you can get the threads back into place after the cut. Now grab your dremel and cut off 4 threads, make sure all filings are cleaned up before removing the engine from the bag. Take the nut off the shaft and you should be good to go.

Do you have a link for this tool? The only one I know about is a rethreader used to repair damages threads. I have not seen a tool that actually creates new threads. thanks

Menards & The Home Depot are guaranteed to have them. Take your engine with you, and show them the threads, and the nut that goes on it. They will probably take you right where you want to be and point out what you will need. They will probably give you a TAP AND DIE set that includes the TAP that you need.
You will just need to lock the engine up so it doesn't spin when you try to add threads heh.

a bigger collet? do they even make one for the GT? if it is possible, it seems that adding more threads to the crank with a tap would be the best way, but the crankshafts are made with such hard steel that I wonder if a tap will even work on it. anyone know? thanks

well you see you shouldnt have to de that because the engies are universal and it mught just abe a manufaturing defect so the maufacter will replace it if that is the casue but yes they do ahve bigger collets i have 2 differnt size collets on my GT's get one from your lhs

well I finally got a hold of someone at Fantom and they are sending me a collet that they said should have shipped with the engine (which I did not get). He said it is a little longer than the stock one I am using and it should fix my problem. Hopefully it works....
