Default Diff assembly in NEST manual wrong?

*edit* sorry for the huge post

I rebuilt my diff on the weekend with a new aluminum diff gear. I replaced the plastic one because it seemed to be slipping too much. When i took it apart, it was melted. Good stuff, buying the new aluminum gear is justified.

Well, i got distracted by the melted gear while taking stuff apart and didn't notice which outdrive went on what side, so when it came time to put things back together, i relied on the manual to tell me what went where. Everything went back together okay, until i tried to put the cv shaft back in the outdrive on the driver-side. There wasn't enough room! The nut locker and spring stuck out too much.
I pulled it back apart and noticed (incorrectly) that i had left out a washer in the thrust bearing assembly (i was wrong, the other washer was stuck inside the outdrive with grease) I put it all back together and it was still wrong.
I pulled it apart again, noticed the error in the thrust bearing and corrected it. By this time i had had the diff apart and together about 5 different times, trying different things and was getting very frustrated.

Looking at the outdrives, it seemed the other side had more room in it for the spring and locking nut assembly, but looking in the manual, it was the wrong one. If you look at the pic, you can clearly see that the outdrive with the shaft that holds the bearings is clearly indicated as the one that the thrust bearing goes into, and the outdrive with the recess for the bearing is the one that holds the spring assembly.
Frustrated i decided to reverse it and put them in opposite to what is pictured. It worked perfectly!

Coincidence or not, the instructions below the pic refer to part 92 as the left outdrive and part 93 as the right. Which is opposite to what side they are in the picture, and in the car (from the driver's point of view).

Anyone else notice this, or care to comment?

Gerwen,

I don't have a comment for you but I think you are right, I have a question for you in this vein: How do you get the thing apart I tried to remove the screw/shaft but the diff gear just rotates.

Also where did you get the aluminum diff gear?

Has anyone tried the Kevlar spur gear from Losi? Will it fit?

Thanks for the great how-to.

the diff gear is the same size (toothwise) as an RC10GT's gear, but IIRC the gear in the EVST has a bigger hole for the bearing.
tomorrow I'll take my GT's diff (since it's out, and it needs replaced anyhow) to work and see if it'll fit in the trans case and mesh up with the other gears properly.

Stick a hex wrench through the two slots in the opposite outdrive and hold it and the gear while turning the screw. You should also do this to both outdrives and try to turn the gear when tightening it back up. It should be very difficult to turn. If you can turn it easily, it needs to be tighter.

I got the gear at the lhs, but tower has it [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&W=000626652&I=LXFWF3&P=K]here[/link]
Probably should also get the [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAMF0&P=M]rebuild kit[/link]

I was right, they are reversed. Here is the response i got when i emailed their car support:
Hello,

Thank you for your recent e-mail. You are correct, the exploded view shows the outdrives incorrectly. They are opposite in position.

I hope this has not caused you great inconvenience.

Thanks for writing!

Sincerely,
Craig

Thunderbirdjunkie, i'd also be interested in knowing how your test goes with the gt diff in the evader.
