Default Epic .18

I just put a Epic big bore .18 in my RC10GT - wow - can't seem to get the mesh right - keep eating spur gears! Engine only barely pulls back from spur (tight) Have a 19 pinion and a 66 spur. What suggestions to get this monster motor in like a 12-15?

If it doesn't work with the curret gearing, either get a smaller clutch bell or get a smaller spur gear (or both).

I dont know how good you are with setting gear mesh, but if you have it to tight it can be bad also. I put a piece of paper (printer paper) between the clutch teeth and the spurr teath, then puch the engine tight and tighten up the bolts. then pull the paper out. perfect gear mesh every time.

also are the bolts that hold the gear box in place loose? if they are then it may be twisting under power causing the gear mesh to change.

You're going to have to change either the spur or CB so you have more room. I think I'd go for a small spur, since that will lower your gear ratio further. With the .18 I doubt it's going to get low enough to really hurt your acceleration. I'm not sure how many teeth you'd need to drop.. easiest thing would be to go to your lhs and compare the sizes with your current one. I'd say you'll need to go at least down into the fifties.

Hi

Did the 19 & 66 gears fit with your old engine.

Yeah - I know about that too - thanks. I also figured that going with lower pinion/spurr would help. A friend of mine told me to use a drill and lenghten the slitted motor mount srew holes o the chassis. I'm like - WHAT?!! Cut up "my precious!!"
Thanks

The 19 / 66 fit --ok, I guess. It was the 19/60 that ripped up pretty bad. This engine is sick! 39,000 rpm!!?!!
I'm picking up the Robinson Hardened steel pinion set that is our now for the RC10GT. 15/65 gearing. Will let ya know how it goes.
I wonder if the tranny will be able to handle the Epic AND the metal gearing (ouch!) Stay tuned or let me know what you all think.
Thanks all!

You're probably going to want to go with more than a 15t CB though. The only bad thing I've heard about using the metal spur was that people who have it seem to go through CB bearings faster.

Personally I'd keep a nylon spur if at all possible, but that's just me.

Hi

I had that steal spur gear & clutch bell combo from R.R. and I bent the R.R. Titanium top shaft that I had in my tranny when a little rock got in between the spur & clutch bell.

Yeah...picked up the Robinson bell/spur combo today....will keep an eye out for stones and stuff ...thanks. It turns out that I didn't have a 19 tooth clutch bell on it when the mesh was way tight...but rather a 24 tooth...no wonder I had no adjustment room !!! (derrr).

Having trouble keeping the engine running. Keeps stalling and spitting tons of fuel. Any ideas to keep it running and maybe burning more and spitt less fuel on the break in.... Man... this Epic .18 sounds strong (in the short periods it was running) but so far a Bear to tune !!
Thanks

Hi

The setting that the instrution sheet say to set the motor for, for break-in are too rich, and you'll have a problem keeping it running. Use the Race starting settings instead for the break-in proceeder.

thanks -- AJ -- you were right. THe suggested settings for break in were too rich - actually the race setting on the low end was also too rich -- just a bit leaner and BAM[/img] - The Epic feels HEALTHY - lots of rippin' ahead!
