Default water drop test

okay on the water drop test on top of the cooling head. is it suppose to sit for about 3 secs before it starts to sizzle, or is it suppose to take about 3-5 secs to sizzle off??? i have a jato if that makes a difference, because everybody says the traxxas engines run hotter.

There aint nuthin rong with the spit test it works just fine as long as you know what you are doing. When I do my test I just make sure it just evaporates, its not the best way to do it but it works and I know Im not getting the most performance as most but I dont mind. But my Comp 2 runs just fine.

So I ono take caution with the WDT though it aint always accurate.

it fine to spit test if you know what ur doing, but i dont ever check the temp of my engines anymore, well at least it doesnt affect my tuning, i just like to know that the spit doesnt sizzle like crazy. it shouild go on and if it instantly sizzles away thats bad, anything else is ok.

Alot of top tuners say engines run between 200 and 300 degrees. Racers will tell you keep it around 200-220 deg. During outdoor season that I find to be too low, it has NO low end power. I use spit test to keep me and my temp gun honest. Pro tuners say tune to track, not temps, just keep it in the range. I use spit test to see what temp it likes and doesn't like. Very little sizzle and as far from 300 as possible.

Its much much better to have a temp gun to make sure how hot it is then to do it by spitting, yes you should be tuning for performance, but that doesnt mean you arent overh heating your motor, due to some other reason, and the spuit test really cant give you an accurate answere.

look guys, wen a motor overheats and gets damaged its due to being too lean, not overheating and then damaging, the temp is not hurting the engine ever, unless you can melt the engine, as long as its got oil going to it then its fine.

EXACTLY!

Don't chase useless numbers that tell you nothing about how your engine is tuned. Your engine will tell you if it is overheating. In most cases it will shut off and it may lead to vapour lock.

Tune to performance and sound only, never temps or engine exhaust.

The spit test is how it was done before we had temp. guns. A mild sizzle is about right. No sizzle you're too rich. Sizzle like a hot griddle and you're too lean. Temp guns are cheap today. When they first came out for the hobby in the around 1985 they were expensive industrial types. I still have mine. An Exergen. It was $400 which was a good price. I later saw it in an industrial catalog (McMaster Carr) for $650. Now you can get them for around $35.

I agree completely!!!!!! The ONLY time you really need to worry about temp is if you are running a water cooled engine, don't believe me go check the temp on a racing dirt bike sometime after they get done running a race.

My rush evo and my savvy actually run better when they are hot than when they are running what is "supposed" to be the proper operating temp.
Do you think airplane people worry about the temp the engine is running? NOT, if airplane people landed just to check the temp on the engine as often as some people do their cars they would never get ANY flight time.
I never checked the temp on my 2stroke bike at all when I was riding it, and never had any problems with it (other than the inherent problems Kawi had with the 2stroke triples)
