i just got my used xxx-nt from my lhs and i noticed that it doesn't have a stinger on the tuned pipe. will this affect performance, i have yet to start it because the batteries were dies in the starter box. so i have no run sounds or anything related.

i lost the stinger on my pipe at the beginning of spring, and i haven't seen any bad effects. it is a tad louder, but nothing really to worry about. i asked a bunch of people on there about it too, but i never really got a straight answer.

I do not think it will hurt but I do not think you will get full performance as if there was not a reason for them they would not have them. The reason I think you getting very little response are most probably no one has tested to see what the difference is. Most probably replace it when it breaks.

You would have to know what parts of the exhaust do what. Basically you will see some basic things that would be different from a tuned pipe with a stinger to the same exact tuned pipe without a stinger. Basically the stinger acts as a tuner also. The longer the stinger the more the top end power. The shorter the stinger then the less top end, the smaller the stingers diameter then you will have more top end with more top end rpm's, the larger the inside diameter of the stinger then you will see more bottom end power but see less top end rpm's. Here's how it goes.
A larger diameter stinger offers less back pressure which means you will have more bottom end but less top end power, and have a little more power through the middle of the rpm range, but you will have less rpm's to use on the top end and the power will tend to dro poff very fast from bottom end to the to pend.
A stinger that is smaller in the inside diameter will offer you more back pressure which means you will have less bottom end but the power will really come on at the higher middle range of rpm's and the top of the rpm range. The power will come on sudden and can be over whelming as it will go from having power to having all the power that you will need, the tires will tend to spin from the extra power that is being added to the wheels. . It will offer more rpm's but this will also raise the temps and will tend to lean your engine out a little. This will make your engine run a lot better on the top end but if the rpm's stay high then you will see high temps from the engine and may even see some burning up.
But since your running no stinger then you will see all bottom end power and have less top end power then if you did have the stinger. Basically the guy who cut the stinger off must have raced at a small technical course, where bottom end power is a must and the top end power is not really needed or the guy wanted all the bottom end power he could get to do wheelies. Or he didn't know what he was doing and was just trying something new, this is possible.
