I know it is fairly easy to cross thread things. I make it a habit to put the glow plug or screw into its hole and turn it backwards till it pops in place. That way I know the threads are lined up properly. In your case it sounds like it may have been cross threaded, but I am not sure. Nothing else seems to grab me as to why you would have to force it in.
