My Nitro Rustler tear down and rebuild(pics)
Alright, first off, ill clarify that i didnt do anything performance wise to the truck, just wanted to clean it. I just got the truck from a forum member, and she was pretty dirty/sandy so i wanted to clean it up[8D] It has a megatech .16 engine with the stock pipe. It also came with a duratrax velocity .17 engine that i may try soon just to see if it runs. The megatech was having tuning issues(which i knew before i got the truck), and seemed to run good up top, but would not idle right, and sometimes die after a hard run. I ran about 8 tanks through it today before doing any of this, just because i couldnt wait to drive it The last time i went to start it, I hit the throttle and the carb body raised out of the block[X(] So now i know i had to have a big air leak, unless it just happened all of a sudden. So anyways, I decided it was sooo dirty that i just needed to tear it down and clean it anyways and fix the problem, and make sure everything else was in good working order. The transmission is pretty new, but i think the truck itself is one of the first since it has dish wheels, and a brown chassis. So here are the before pictures:

Now for the clean stuff. I basically just used a toothbrush and some paper towels[8D] I wasnt real worried about getting it perfect since its not a show truck anyways, I just wanted it to be pretty clean and not all oily and so bad that you cant see anything to work on it

Its not anything special, but i am pretty happy with it now that she is all cleaned up. The motor isnt mounted yet, but ill probably do that and run it some tomorrow I am getting a used O.S. .18 with a tiger drive in the mail soon on a trade, so It may end up on the rustler is the Megatech isnt running any better. I believe it will be much better to tune, start, and run with the carb on tight. And if nothing else at least it is clean enough that i can see to work on it Im pretty certain its one of the first rustlers since it has dish rims and a brown chassis. Let me know what you guys think of it. I put this here because the N rustler thread is pretty dead. Questions, comments, and criticism welcome. [8D]

Yeah definitely looks like one of the firts ones, I have one too and recently decided to rebuild it! Let me know how you get that os.18 in there... I would definitely like to get one in the future for it! I was too worried about compatibility so just got another traxxas pro.15 which runs ok but is no great machine.... was also thinking of putting a .15 os actually...

A .18 O.S. cv-rx will bolt right in. The only thing that needs to be done is to take a dremel and cut the crankshaft down a little, unless you already have the short shaft version. Im still waiting on it in the mail, but ill probably try her out when i get it

I have some nice RPM wheels and some meaty tires id like to put on it. I have to get new front rims to fit it though.
Looks like i will be putting the other engine(velocity .17) on though. I took the head off this one today to see if i could take any shims out of it because compression is getting weak. Well in the process i managed to strip out one hole, and break an allen bolt off in another. Looks like this engine is ruined[:@] It probably didnt have much life left anyways, but it would of lasted a little longer. Oh well i guess.

Well, i got the duratrax motor swapped over, but the drill i was starting it with had the battery go dead. Cant wait to get the O.S. Im tired of messing with these cheap motors. The duratrax may be ok though once i get it to start and get it tuned.

I receved the O.S. and the guy told me he was sending me something else with it. I had no idea what it was, but when i got it it was a decent looking complete traxxas .15 pro with a pull start, t-maxx motor mount, clutch assembly with 20t clutch bell, O.S. carbuertor, and pipe and header assembly. I completely tore it down because it was a little gummed up and didnt spin real free. I oiled up the bearings, and cleaned it up, and put it on the rustler, and ill be darn if my free motor didnt start up and run like a top!
It ran the whole first tank in 20* weather without stalling or missing a beat. Im going to try and run it some more soon, but so far it sure seems like a sweet little motor. I may leave it on there. Seems to have enough power for the traction of the truck as it is. [8D]

That is a first release model, because you still have the tank with the primer bulb on the tank. Those tanks were done away with around the second release with the EZ Start unit. The Traxxas gearboxes are tough. It should handle the .18, but the axles will at least need the metal outdrives. MIP axles are good, as long as they are maintained.
