From Radio South - Tony Stillman Today

8/12 -- According to our calculations, the USA wrapped up the Team Gold today! The Japanese Team has already congratulated us! Jason, Sean and Chip all flew VERY well, and received high marks for it. We actually extended our lead over Japan. We have a chance to further increase it tomorrow, as Jason is 4th up in the morning, followed by Sean about 1 hour later. Chip flies 3rd from the last pilot of the day. This should give us good air for everyone, as the wind usually is light in the morning, then gets breezy during the day. it usually starts to calm by about 5 PM, although it never gets completely calm. Chip has flown in wind the whole time, so hopefully he will get good air for at least one round.
We went out and celebrated a little tonight, with some pizza and relaxed some. These guys have really put their heart and soul into their flights, and I am very proud to be associated with each of them. Mike McMurtry, David Stoddard and Sean Plummer have worked to help every pilot to be prepared and fly their best. We have not even had a "bib" problem!
I'm looking forward to tomorrow! Time for sleep....I'll have result numbers to post late on Wednesday night. I'll try to post them so you can see them late on Wednesday, your time (it's 7 hours earlier here!)

He guys,
I wonder if there`s someone that will make a video or dvd of this event. It`s a real shame that the rc video industry is not interested on making a video of the most prestigious event (for me )concerning rc aerobatics.
I have the 1999 F3A WC Video from Propwash, and i have watched it so many times, that my mother knows all the Pilots in flight order, she tells me againnnnnnnnn those planes,i can`t help it i`am a patternfreak .

To pattern freak: They are making a video that will be available at least as VHS (PAL and NTSC). They will cover some of the prelims but concentrate on semifinals and finals. We already ordered, I think it was around 30 euro / tape. We will try to get the order information online.

Top 10 as of 1pm local time is:
1) Christophe 1671.6
2) Quique 1623.6
3) Jason Shulman 1586.2
4) Chip Hyde 1579.6*
5) Sean McMurtry 1575.2
6) Wolfgang Matt 1573.6
7) Roland Matt 1573.3
8) Yoichiro Akiba 1570.2*
9) Tetsuo Onda 1566.6
10) Sebastiano Silvestri 1546.2
* Have not flown 4th round yet and can still improve position.
TBL has not been applied yet so things can shift around a little. I think it's safe to say Christophe will not lose the top spot going into the semi-finals however. What's more amazing is that during his 2nd round (panel 3), he zeroed the 1 1/2 snap, opposite 4 of 8 and STILL came in 3rd in the flight. Also interesting that all 3 biplanes being flown are in the top 10. Chip has apparently not yet had calm winds so apparently the bipes aren't suffering too badly with wind.
Top 30 pilots advance to the semi-finals.

The prelims are over and were waiting for the final results (at the beer tent...)
Akiba's engine died today during his 4th flight. Also Christophe did not have his best flight today. Other than that the top pilots performed pretty much as expected.
If You want to order the video now call Andrew at +48 501 753741. He speaks english, polish, russia etc. There was no email in the advertisement.
Attached is a group photo of team Finland.
The pilots from left are:
Markus Aaltonen, flying an Enigma with YS140DZ
Erkko Saviaro, flying a Sombrero with OS140RX-EFI
Tuomas Tanska, flying a Midas with YS140L
Helpers and supporters starting from left:
Ilona Hiekkanen
Kimmo Kaukoranta
Raimo Ruokonen (Team manager)
Antero Tanska
Vuokko Tanska

Hi RcNorth
Great to see the reports that you have been putting up. I would like to say great flying to the CANADIAN Team and all the other fliers. It is great to see such flying and have no political strips get in the way.

Oh, I hope Natalie from ZNLine gets interviewed.
If Natalie is interviewed (she speaks fluent English and can talk airplane too), then the tape will be worth it for that alone!!! Pascal, you lucky guy.
On the pattern side, ZNLine Belgium wishes to extend heartiest congratulations to Christophe. Your Synery is a great airplane, the pilot incredible. We really hope your brother can make the Havay show this month.
Also, a hearty congratulations to the US team for the team gold (it's a tough position for me as an American working at ZNLine).
We are very pleased to have so many of our airplanes being flown in the WC. We congratulate all ZN pilots for getting to where they are today.
Markus, great job with your Enigma. Keep going in that direction.
Also, fantastic job by the Belgian team. Great placings from this tiny nation. F3A is quite serious over here in spite of the small population. All Belgian pilots will fly into the semifinals. May the wind drop to nothing during your spins!!!
On the bipeplane issue, I think that the Japanese Narlar bipeplane was not flown in the competition but used as a back up. Is that correct? While we would have loved to see the Suxess flown, there was not sufficeint time to work out the remaining bugs, and Christophe selected the best airplane, his Synergy, for the job at hand.
Still, no chamagne yet. There is some serious flying to be done. I am sitting on pins and needles...the suspence is incredible. I have not slept well for three days now.
Best wishes to all.
Mark
PS: Thanks so much to those on the ground for your wonderful reports and thanks to Troy for dissecting the score board.

About the engines, at least Christophe and Sean are still using the YS140L with plenty of power for the P-03. Infact most of the flameouts were with the Dingo (Akiba, Roland, Markus...) For competition flying reliability is more important than raw power.
Bernd Beshoener is using the Webra 160 and Ewald Trumpp uses the OS140RX. Masato Kusama and Ola Fremming are using the OS140RX-EFI. Many 2-stroke guys are using the excellent pipes made by Manfred Greve. Nothing really new except for Jason's Hacker and Chip's YS160, just good old reliable engines.
Onda was flying his Narlar bibe at the practice field earlier but at least on the 3rd round which we saw he was using a monoplane.

Earlier in this thread somebody was asking about the junior pilots. There were NINE junior pilots flying. The youngest is Geoffrey Bainathsah from Suriname, he's 13 years old. Geoffrey is flying a Synergy with OS140RX-EFI.

The second Youngest is Sergey Butuzov from Russia. Sergey is 14 years old. According to the other russians he is practically living at the flying field. He flew very well and placed 60th.
