Default Transmitter Tray in Pattern

How many of you use a transmitter tray in pattern and, do you feel it really makes a difference in your flying?

I use a tray when flying pattern, IMAC or helis. For me, I feel better able to simply move the sticks and not have to worry about holding the TX or adjusting for its movement. Most people seem not to like trays. I like them.

Istarted using a tray about 3 years ago. Ilike the stable platform, and Ithink it does help my flying somewhat. If you're a thumb flyer, it may not be the way to go, but if you pinch the sticks with thumb and forefinger, you may like it.

I was a thumbs/neck strap flyer for many years until my buddy (Dave Reaville) convinced me that for pattern it would be easier to fly with a tray. So I switched to finger/thumb and the tray the same season and battled the demons for most of the year but my flying did improve. Where I really notice it is in the point rolls and it stopped me from unnecessary inputs like in slow rolls etc. and have found that there is less hand movement. Now I won't leave home without it and when I do I call the wife to bring it to the field!!! LOL

It really comes down to each pilot and what he or she feels comfortable with but for me it was a positive change.

Ive used one for a long time. Actually rebuilt/built a new one this year similar to one I saw on another site. I like this one real well but haven't had an official test drive of it yet, just simulator tryout of it. Made from masonite type pressboard I had laying around and painted, probably about $15 in parts and spray paint; if you have time.

It never occured to me to build your own tray. I always thought it was something you purchased, usually made out of aluminum. Really cool idea!!

I wouldnt build it out of Aluminum. That would get super hot just sitting in the sun just before the flight.

I've thought about trying to learn to fly using a tray due to some hand injuries I sustained in motorcycle racing, but I just haven't gotten around to it. I've been flying thumbs for 37 years.. so it's a big change.
