Emerald Coast Beachcomber Pattern Classic, Oct 8-9 2011

You are invited to attend the Emerald Coast Beachcomber PatternClassic on 8 and 9 Oct 2011 (Columbus Day Weekend). The contest will be held on EglinAFB, Test Site C-3, on Florida Highway 285, three miles north ofCollege Blvd, just outside Niceville, FL. Entry fee is $25, cash, check, or money order. </div><div style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 12pt">
The plan is to conduct the pilots' meeting at 0830 on Saturday andbegin flying at 0900. We will fly all classes, Sportsman,Intermediate, Advanced, Masters, and FAI. FAI will fly P-11 onSaturday and F-11 on Sunday. Awards will be presented through thirdplace in each class.The weight limit in Sportsman is raised to 20 lbs.

I've arranged a special rate with the Niceville Quality Inn, $69 per night ($79 is the normal rate). Please mention Model Airplane Contest to get the discount rate. Please book early. The hotel will only hold the block of rooms until September 26th. The contact info for the Quality inn is:

The Air Force increased security at the field, so we cannot allow overnight camping on the test site. The park is close to the field, about a 15 minute drive, depending on traffic. Their website is:

As i mentioned earlier, the Air Force increased security at C-3. We're still working out the details with the site chief. The new requirement is gate at Highway 285 must remain locked during non-duty hours, with duty hours being M-F, 0630-1530. I will post the details here when we finalize then with the site chief.

Fellow Pattern Flyers,Here’s the update on the Emerald Coast Beachcomber Pattern Classic, Eglin AFB, FL, 9-10 Oct 2011:Ken Blackwell opened registration on the NSRCA D-3 website. Please register if you haven’t done so. It allows us to set up PACSS in advance and will make things easier Saturday morning.Field Availability: The field will be available for practice on Friday, 10 Oct 2011. Once we have a “critical mass” of contest pilots, I will close the field to sport flying. I expect that to occur about noon.Security Procedures: 1. We are not able to accommodate spectators because of increased security at Test Site C-3. The gate at Route 285 must remain locked during non-duty hours. We simply do not have the people available to escort people to and from the gate during the contest and we are not authorized to provide unescorted access to the site (i.e. provide the lock combination) to the general public. 

 2. Aerial cameras are not permitted. We had an accidental fly-away a few months ago and the incident is currently under investigation. Unless we hear otherwise from the Air Force, aerial photography is prohibited at our field.

 3. The site chief approved the addition of a second lock to the gate at Route 285! When you arrive at Test Site C-3, the gate to the site will be locked with two locks, a black one and a gold one. The black one is the Air Force’s lock and the gold one is the club’s. I will provide the combination to the club lock. The conditions set by the Air Force are as follows:

 a. The club lock will only be in place during daylight hours while contestants are at the field. It will be removed once all non Eglin Aeromodellers’ guests have left for the day and will be returned to the gate the following morning by either the contest director or designated representative. At the end of the contest, it will be permanently removed.

 b. Contestants flying in this event will be considered temporary Eglin Aeromodellers club members and will be provided the combination to the second (gold) lock under the following provisions:

 (1) The combination shall not be provided to anyone who is not a registered contestant.

 (2) The gate must not be left uncontrolled at any time. When entering the gate, you must immediately lock the gate behind you. Other authorized persons can enter with your vehicle. However, if you do not recognize the individual(s) in the vehicle, challenge them. If the person(s) state they work at C-3, politely ask them to not tailgate you and to unlock and secure the gate using the Air Force’s lock. Also, if you know your buddy will be along “in a minute”, lock the gate behind you. Leaving the gate unsecured for even a few minutes is unacceptable to the Air Force. If you have any issues or problems at the gate, please call me on my cell at 850-499-7095.

 (3) I will e-mail the combination for the lock to registered contestants about a week before the contest. So, please register on the NSRCA D-3 website.

 (4) I apologize for the inconvenience. The Air Force has determined increased security at the site is needed, so we need to respect the wishes of the site owner.Fun Stuff: Now that the boring, bureaucratic stuff is out of the way, it’s time to get to the good stuff!1. FAI: The response to the poll on RCU was unanimous, so we will debut the new FAI “P” sequence. FAI pilots will fly six (or as many as possible) rounds of P-13.

 2. Saturday Night Dinner: I reserved the back room at Ed’s Steaks and Seafood. Please shoot me an e-mail if you plan on attending so the restaurant can make arrangements for the extra staff to accommodate us.

 3. Sportsman: Any AMA legal airplane, up to 20 pounds may be flown in Sportsman.

 4. “Club Only Sportsman” I am running a non-sanctioned event in parallel with the contest. I dubbed it “Club Only Sportsman”. This event is only open to Eglin Aeromodellers club members with no previous competition experience. My goal is to introduce pattern flying to sport flyers in a low(er)-pressure environment and hopefully recruit some new pattern flyers for next season. This event will be mostly transparent. They will fly with the Sportsman pilots, be judged to the sane criteria. The only difference is they will be “racked and stacked” in a separate competition class, complete with its own set of awards.  We’re expecting fabulous weather – October is our best flying month. And, this is the last regular season contest before the District Championship. So, if you need a few more points to improve your standing, or you want to sharpen your skills a bit before the D-3 Championship contest, If you’re not in D-3, come on out! Good news. Houston is planning on flying FAI this year so he'll have a shot at the Junior member slot on the US Team! And, I've been socializing the possibility of adding a Classic Pattern event to next year's contest. I'll be posting a poll and thread to solicit feedback. Just jeep tuned in here and on the NSRCA Discussion List.

The 2011 Emerald Coast Beachcomber Pattern Classic is now history. To put it mildly, the winds were sporty. We had strong cross winds, 15 mph gusting to 21 mph on Saturday and 18 mph gusting to almost 30 mph on Sunday!

We had 15 enter the sanctioned contest and 2 of our sport flyers enter the unsanctioned sportsman event I called "Club Only" Sportsman. I came up with this event to give our club members an opportunity to try pattern flying in a reduced pressure environment. The eligibility rules were: 1. must be a current member of the Eglin Aeromodellers. 2. Must have no previous competition experience. I wanted a level playing field for first timers. Our club President, Mike Holderness, and new pilot Cody Powell accepted my challenge.

We started the first round a little after 0900 from the east side of our runway, so the winds were blowing everyone out. After the first round, we took a little break, moved to the west side of the runway (to keep the sun at our backs) and fired up the grill for burgers and hot dogs. We then resumed flying with the winds now blowing everyone in. Despite two brief showers, we completed four rounds on Saturday and we then adjourned for dinner. Several of us had a wonderful dinner at Ed's Seafood and Streaks in Niceville. The food and service was top notch.

We returned to the field Sunday and started round five at about 0830. I was hoping we could beat the winds, but we quit after the fifth round. The wind gusts were reaching 30 mph and the turbulence coming off the trees was making approaches and landings hazardous.

George Gordon flew solo in Sportsman. Intermediate was action packed with six contestants, Mike Williams, Neil Rivera, Larry Odom, Mike Plummer, and Yves Lalime. Mike Williams dominated Intermediate, winning with a perfect 4000. Close behind Mike was Neil Rivera, with 3881. Neil managed to win round four, but Mike came back to win round five. Larry Odom and Mike Plummer duked it out over third place. Mike was leading after three, but Larry came back in rounds four and five to capture third place. Yves Lalime took fifth in his first ever try at intermediate. And Larry Loucks finished sixth.

Advanced saw four pilots, Victor Diaz, Ken Blackwell, Houston Schweitzer, and Greg Grigsby. Houston won the first round, but Victor was to not be vanquished. He rose to the challenge, winning rounds two, three and four. Ken turned consistently good flights and took second. Houston was plagued by engine and radio programming issues with the Aggressor Gary Courtney loaned him and dropped to third. Greg had a hard landing in the first round and had to withdraw from the contest. Victor flew one of the new Extreme Flight 2 Meter Vanquishes and I was very impressed with that airplane. Extreme has come out with an affordable plane that flies at least as well as the $2,000 plus composite birds. Victor also delivered eight Vanquishes to the contest.

Masters featured John Fuqua, Kyuho Lee, and Ron Van Putte. John scored a perfect 4000, with Kyuho not far behind with 3668. Kyuho had the best looking airplane at the contest, an Oxai Axiome with a geared hacker in runner for power. Ron decided discretion was the better part of valor and decided not to risk flying in the winds.

Chris Odom was unopposed in FAI.

The Club Only Sportsman featured Eglin Aeromodellers President and veteran sport flyer Mike Holderness and newcomer Cody Powell. Cody won the first round with some very impressive flying. Believe it or not, Cody has never flown in winds that rough before. Cody won again in the second round, but not by much. Once Mike got into the rhythm of turn-around flying, he found his groove and scored a 924 against Cody's 1000. I saw Mike's second flight and it looked like we were headed into a real shoot-out here. Unfortunately, Mike lost his engine shortly after take-off in round three and he damaged his landing gear in a hard downwind landing, taking him out of the contest. Cody flew impressive flights in each round. He is an amazingly talented young pilot. He stopped flying on the buddy box six months ago and has only been practicing pattern for two weeks. And, his airplane is a World Models Sly Raider Mach One!!!! I think we'll be seeing a lot more of Cody in the near future.

We're planning on having an even better contest next year, possibly adding classic pattern as well. I'll be posting a thread here to solicit feedback in the next couple of weeks, so please stay tuned.

The next contests in the queue are the District Three Championships, Cordele GA, Nov 4-6 and Tangerine, Apopka, FL, Dec 2-4.

I was out there Saturday and enjoyed just watching. Some great flights despite the wind. Lots of beautiful aircraft too.

I went to the field on Sunday after everyone had packed up and gone home. Got 3 flights in on my U-Can-Do after a 5 year break from flying. It was like riding a bike
