We will be there Friday even if lunch will be chicken AGAIN.lol I'm assuming you will have a CC ice speed controller arming area set up a safe distance away from the flight line. Please let me know if you need fireproof gloves.

Scott,
Thought of that, but can't fit the planes and the kids in the vehicles. Somethings got to stay behind and I'm pretty sure I might as well just stay with one of you guys permanently if I leave Tara and the kids alone through this, and I'm certainly not leaving my airplanes alone in that storm...lol

Arch,
How about renting a trailer? How you pack it is up to you(planes and gear or wife and kids
). After all anything is better than riding out a hurricane. Take it from me, I have lived here in central Florida since 1992 and have seen more than anyone's share of hurricanes.
PS-Any of you guys talking about Wheeling ever hear of a club whose name I believe is The Wheeling Hill Hoppers? I was a member in 1975 but I moved away and never was able to return. I used to buy all my "stuff" at the LHS in Wheeling, and we did our flying on top of a hill that was situated between Wheeling, W. Va. and Washington, Pa. Crashed a lot of birds in the woods surrounding that field, mostly due to radio clitches.Spent more time searching for wreckage than flying.LOL. Always found them though. The Phoenix was the most popular pattern plane back then and we had some pretty accomplished pilots. At any rate, I just wondered if they were still around. Thanks!

The Hillhoppers are still ther, billberry. I've flown there many times. The terrain makes things interesting...Miss the runway by 20 feet and you're 30 feet up in a tree, lol.
They have nice (flushing) restrooms now and still do their annual air show. It's coming up again in mid-September.
Was the Phoenix pilot you remember Billy Ney?
Scott

Scott,
It was so long ago that I don't remember anyone's name, but I do remember that he was a young guy in his teens at the time. He and his dad use to travel to the pattern contests of the day. His dad essentially served as his builder and pit crewman/spotter. His Phoenix was white with red trim I believe, and it had Robart retracts that they used R-12 freon to charge. If anyone remembers way back then I was the beginner pilot who drove the bright orange 1975Dodge van with the multi colored shag carpeted interior. Oh yes; I learned to solo in about two weeks that summer and was flying Sig Kougars, Taurus', and a Mach Iwithin the first month. I had a really good and helpful instructor who was a little bit older than most of the guys and I remember he used to wear bip overalls all the time. That summer I had a night job at the truck stop, so I spent a lot of time keeping the field mowed.
PS- Thanks for the reply!

Hi billberry189
My name is Mark Radcliff. I'm pretty sure it was Bill Ney and his dad you are talking about. They lived in Wheeling and he and his dad went to pattern contest along with me and my dad. We became very good friends. We lived in Wintersville OH and the Neys and us would meet up a lot of times and go to contest together. We were all flying the Phoenix design. Excellent pattern ship in it's day. Young Bill lives in Pittsburgh and recently started flying again. Actually we hope to fly together at an up coming event in a few weeks. Bills dad is still living in Wheeling and hopefully I will get to visit with him in a few weeks also. Glad to see someone remembers those days.
Take care.
Mark

Hey guys, I will be there late on Friday. Are you going out to eat anywhere Friday night? I think that we will get there about 8:00pm. Are we still flying p-13 in FAI? I'm actually just coming for the food all around. The flying is secondary.

Billberry,
I believe your instructors name would be Alan Grimes. The LHS would be Fultons Hobby Shop. All still exist, people and all.
Dave,
I'll be cooking Friday night but I'll bet someone will going out for a bite and brew. I'll be ready for a beer or two Saturday for sure.
See you soon,
Rick

Dave,
I have a funeral to attend so I won't be getting there until late Friday. I'd be honored to break bread with ya! Not sure what time I'll be getting there, though. I'm staying at the Red Roof Inn.
