Hi guys,

I noticed the braid on the plug lead is coming out from the plug cap. I have seen on pictures, some have a semi clear wrap of some sort around this, which i presume is to stop this from happening?

Is this a heat proof tape that is used or if not can someone advise what they have used?

Any advise is appreciated.

I had the same problem.
I went to an electrical supply house and bought a foot of 1" diameter shrinkable tubing. You need that size to go over the 90 degrees bend. I cut a piece about 1.5 inches long and shrinked with the Monokote heat gun. Worked perfect!

In general, the braid is copper based and the plug cap is steel. You can push the braid back in and drop a drop of solder on the edge where the two come together. Use a tie wrap or wire tie to get the braid small evenly. No need to solder all around, but it wouldn't hurt anything if you did. A shrink tube works fine covering the area as does electrician's mastic tape (it's rubber tape that you stretch to make it adhere to itself). There is also spiral cut tubing that is designed as chafe guard, but use that over the shrink tube or mastic

I bought some 20mm (3/4") heat shrink, the cap will just go through with a bit of wriggling. I tested a piece before putting it on the lead and it will only shrink down to 10mm (3/8"). The lead is 1/4" diameter.
I'm back at work now and the sparkies have some 22mm (7/8") heat shrink with glue on the inside. I tested a piece and this will shrink down to 1/4" and the glue will help hold the braid in place.
I will put this on next week when i get home from work. Should do the trick nicely.

Comes in different shrink ratios. U got 2-1. Just need to find a place that sells it in 4-1, it's usually more expensive.

The stuff we have at work has the nominal and minimum shrink diameters marked on the outside. 22-6, which is 7/8"-1/4". I like the glue on the inside, should work really well.

I think that braid also completes the circuit back to the module..

Yes I think you are correct.

The braid as mentioned above completes the circuit and also absorbs the EMP generated by the passing current, the better the connection the better it will work.

This is the heat shrink with the glue inside. i cannot move the lead inside the heat shrink, so this should work well.
