My dad and I have our own biplanes!
We call them Sting Bi and they are my dads very own, cad designed pattern ships. Everything is cut out with our own cnc router. They have elevator and top wing adhedral, and are the best flying airplanes I've ever owned. My dad owns the first version, which is powered by a ys 175. It weighs approx 4900 grams. My biplane is redesigned to be light, and is powered by an electric neu f3a motor and supports 5000mah hobbyking batteries. rtf weight is approx 4150 grams A new full composite design is in the works...

Maiden flight of Passion with gas engine PTE36R. Weight about 4800 g (10,5 lbs). Second flight last 22 mn with 450 cc (1,2 gal). Very powerfull.

We uses muffler sold with the engine. But it is too noisy. We are looking for a cheap canister or exhaust tuned pipe.

We uses an APC 18x10 for breaking. But we will try APC 19x11 or 20x10,5.

Claude, the Mintor 38cc is all aluminum and is reasonably priced. I paid around 115$ US for mine purchased from the Area 51 UK distributor. The header is the same as used on the OS140RX which Tower sells for about 50$ US. It needs a little modification to fit the PTE36 (I have a PTE36 also and it will go into a Vanquish ).

Going to try either the DLE 35R or PTE36 with an ES 40cc carbon pipe in an old Piedmont Focus II as a test bed. Both engines appear to be about equal in weight. Not sure which to go with yet...leaning toward the DLE. I was looking to do something similar with the Vanquish also....How do you plan to work the pipe into it? Did a L'Essence some years ago and had to mold a Carbon Fiber pipe tunnel ....maybe something similar would work on the Vanquish.

Unfortunately I have a JMB header for my ZDZ40 just like the one shown in the pic at TroyB. It is smaller diameter header than the Macs and will be mismatched to the inlet of the 40G pipe. It is soft ally and may not survive lots of vibes. But then again, it's only 35$

A pair of Arbalests. This is the latest design by David McFarlane and continues the medieval weapons naming theme started by the Slingshot through Trebuchet and Ballista. These are virtually identical except for the obvious appendages (wing fences, sfg's and large cannalisor) on mine!. This is my first attempt at a fully moulded fuse and the learning curve was steep but fun. The plug, mould and test flights are described in the Blog on this site www.nswpattern.org.au under Ballista Evo II until we renamed it. A few details:- length1945mm, span 1730mm, wing area 61.4 dm(950 sq ins). Both use JR digital servos but David is using high voltage with no regulator. Mine weighs 4640 gms with an 1190 gm F3A Unlimited 4900 pack while David's is 4915 gms with a 1200 gm Thunder Power 5000 pack. The main reason for the difference is that David's wings, stab and rudder are glassed ( 0.6oz) and painted while mine are honey combed and monocoted. As a comparison my wings, without the wing fences (these add 17 gms per wing) are 320 gms ea ready to fly, while David's are 410 gms. The main contributors are honey combing saved 38 gms per wing on mine and the glass added 60 gms + paint 47 gms on Davids compaired to 47 gms of film on mine. We didn't have quite enough wing dihedral (0.9 deg) and mine needed 12% rudder to aileron mix to fix the adverse roll. After changing battery position then restoring it because I am using also using Zippy compact 5800 packs weighing 1300 gms I made a couple of new cannalisors of increasing size and dihedral.The rudder to aileron mix on mine is down to 1% to correct proverse on left rudder and 3% to correct adverse roll on right rudder. The next build will have more dihedral so I'm sure the large cannaliser won't be necessary- any way I am happy with the outcome and beauty is in the eye of the beholder!! We are both happy with the way they are flying and continue to trim and play - as you would understand. Cheers Bill

I am a fan of paint too. I no longer glass the surface tho. I use silkspan and dope it down with nitrate dope. It is thinner and much lighter than glass (even the 0.5 oz variety), on par with plastic film when fully painted. Consider than none of these finishes are thick enough to provide any hanger rash protection, neither glass nor silkspan. So why use glass?
Light silkspan requires some special handling skill to lay down but works well. It may be simpler to start developing the skill with medium silkspan...much easier to work with
