Hey guys. This is my first own design 2 metre pattern model. I'm only 12 so i'm redy to listen to whatever you have to say about it. Anything would be helpful towards it. So far i've just planned the fuse. The plane is called a calypso. To get a clearer picture you have to zoom in. Sorry guys if you can't make out some of the things its just that I can't get it on the computer any other way.

Hello Chris,
it looks very nice, I hope it will fly as good as it looks
My only suggestion is to place the mean landing gear further back-wards, or you can get a plane the will see all the corners of your airfield before it takes off. I should place it right before the leading edge, if your gear is pointing a little back-wards like you've drawn it.
But it looks good, very good

Ahhh brings back memories of me when I was your age...
I'm only 25 now! ROFL!
I'd be interested to see your wing plan, so I can figure out more about.
Oh and dude, you might wanna change the name, Hanno Prettner put his name of the Calypso 15 years ago

It looks like you're off to a good start. I have taped a bunch of sheets together lots of times to draw plans on. When I was your age computers were not available to kids. I wish I had learned to use a CAD program when I was your age. It would have made making airplane plans a lot easier. Since you obviously have computer access and internet access I would encourage you to download one of the free CAD programs to use in designing your planes. You can learn some valuable computer skills while having fun with airplanes. There are also low cost CAD programs available at places that sell software. Tell your parents it will be educational and they will probably buy it for you.
Here are some pictures of Hanno Prettner's Calypso. He won the pattern world championship with it. Early 1980's I think.

Is it just me or is the Root chord bigger on the wing plan than the fuse profile???
Not meaning to hang (you know what, they'll ban me if i keep swearing) on your plan..
the area for the wing looks about right tho

i'm not sure but i will make sure to check it. it may just be because i took the fuse photo from further back than the wing. but thanks for letting me know.

raptor5900, I have a friend that also does R/C pattern flying. I will probably get him to cut my cores. he doesn't do his cutting by hand he does it with weights and pulleys to get it even without marks. I'ts not very far from a CNC machine.

That's a nice agressive wing taper ratio... should have very quick and positive aileron response. You might want to devise a way to somehow experiment with different wing and stab locations to test out in flight.

Two quick tips on designing your own:
1) Start with the basic lines from a pattern ship you know works really well. These planes have been though many generations to get the performance worked out. Thrust line, wing and stab positions, and incidences. That way you can have a pretty good idea that it will work straight away.
2) Unless you have a real need for a new 2x2 patternship right now build it smaller first. Like 40 or 50 size or even small electrics, that way you don't have to invest as much money and more importanly time when you make changes.

thanks mc17. i have designed my own plane because i am flying F3A competition (top class here in aus
) and need a plane that flys pretty much exactly to my liking. i lke the faster models with straight snaps and a very positive aileron control. believe it or not this model is actualy designed around a seduction wildstyle 3D model because i noticed that in flight the model flies very straight like a pattern model and almost corects itself in the wind
.thanks for the replies guys!

Sorry to break it to you Chris, but I think Arnaud Poyet (sorry if I butchered the name) used a plane called a twister at Pennsacola in 99.

Chris,
I think what you've done looks great. I am working on my own design too. It is definitely a learning experience. I feel alot of pride in designing my plane and if it does not fly to my liking, then it can be changed....I'm prepared for that. I agree with the comment though that to have significant success on the first go around, it should be based on what already works. To see my 2M design (almost complete) go to:

Good luck,
