RE: Desire 60 build, first jig built balsa.
After a 2 hr. drive to the hobby shop and back and about 2 hrs. of relearning what to do, look at the pic, 0* on all 4 surfaces. It's a good thing too, the horz. was already glued in from eyeballing it.
Had both the wings at 1* positive so I had to move the ply plates a fraction to get the 0* that was called for but it's there now. Time to start covering but all they had of the colors I wanted was white so I'll have to order the rest. It's not going to be ready for Andersonville next week.

Ini, I have a Hatori 650 pipe, will that work with the FX without a pump?

I have just that: Hatori 650 and OS 91 FX. I can put tank 4" behind fire wall and it works really well. If you want to have the tank over cg you shall need a pump. That can be done but needs quite some tinkering. I have tried Cline, did not work, and Perry VP-30, did not have patience to set it up. I am now running with pipe pressure only and am very happy with it. Pipe really makes a difference.
Of course the YS pressure feed system is superior to pipe pressure (constant mixture in any position) but OS 91 FX is a LOT more power than any YS 61.
If you go this way, I can send you pipe lenght as well (just do not have it here right now).
edit:
Header lenght 235 mm (9 1/4" ) measured along the curve, distance between plug and pipe inlet 185 mm (7 1/4" )

I appreciate the help Ini but I think I'm going to stick another YS on it for now. I'm going to buy one from Impactiq because that is what the plane is set up for and the tank is like a foot from the motor. I think that I will get a 91 and try it after I get through flying this plane as my primary plane.

Probably a very wise decision
With that tank setup the YS is completely unsensitive to plane position.
OS would have needed a pump.
I do not get anything for people buying OS 91 FX's. I just feel it is a very good engine for a smaller pattern plane.
Somehow I get good vibes when I see CA Models Epsilon and 91 FX ...
Maybe some day.

Got the pipe tunnel done, finally. Also started covering. Had to stop the covering when I remembered I had not sealled the pipe tunnel. That would have been a big Oh Sh*!&%!

RE: Desire 60 build, first jig built balsa.
Started covering the fuse and remembered how much I don't like doing this. I will paint fron now on thank you very much. The pic doesn't show it but I'm using flour. pink, blue and yellow. The pink has white under it and when you heat it up to seal the edges it has little white streaks or lines left there. Also when you put the heat gun on it it does the same thing. Oh well this plane is just to get back my thumbs and building skills anyway. I guess hoping it would turn out perfect is just dumb after as long as I took off. Anyone have this troulbe with monokote?

Just fuel proofed the pipe tunnel with some thinned Z-poxy. That stuff goers on like water. I think I found the formula for my glass cloth/painting on my next project!

RE: Desire 60 build, first jig built balsa.
I'm just returning to this hobby (used to fly C/L) after being away from it for several decades (!). I have some experience in boat building (full size) and have had real good experience with a brushable epoxy called the West System. This stuff has been around for 25-30 years and is used extensively in boat building and repair. It's available at almost any marine supply store. I notice that you have misgivings about monokote. My experience has been limited to some small electric planes I've been foolin' around with. As a beginner, I've had some difficulties, but despite this, the planes still fly better than I do. I've acquired a large stand off scale kit which is totally balsa planked and I'd like to paint it. It seems that paint systems are no longer limited to the old Aero Gloss, etal finishes. I've been told that everything from auto paint to Rustoleum is now popular for finishing glo or gas powered planes. Do you have any advice?

West Systems epoxy is very widely used in our hobby nowand is very good. As far as painting goes, there are several good threads on that in the pattern forum. Go to the 2 meter plans thread and read what MHester says about it. He is very knowledgeable on the subject and from pics of his work quite good as well. Most people use PPG brand paints as well as Imron. I used the PPG's backin the early '90's when I was painting and flying quite a bit. It is very good, but expensive, paint and stands up to the nitro in our fuel. Do a search on whatever subject you need specific info on and chances are someone has already asked your question and gotten an answer. Good luck with getting back at it.

One last pic of the bottom. Pipe tunnel is epoxy coated up under the monokote on the sides just in case. Bottom of plane will be blue and yellow since I'll have a lot left over from the trim on the top.

Looks great so far!
There's also a relative newcomer to the 2 part epoxy paint (and I can't find their name just now, but I've read about them in R/C Report and maybe RCModeler). ANyway, I've painted with just about everything (Hobbypoxy, Superpoxy, Aerogloss, automotive lacquer, and PPG enamels). I'm going to go back to epoxy paint if this new stuff works well. Anybody try it yet?

Will, I may be wrong but, as I remember it the PPG paint I was using was an epoxy paint. I know the guys at the automotive store I used to get it from warned me about it every time I bought some. I know it is great paint and can be made in any color.

Got the stabs and rudder covered just the wings left to go. Finish painting the canopy and maybe in the air by next weekend.

I had plenty of blue and yellow left over from the trim colors so guess what color the bottom of the wings and stabs are, Bingo!

I'm hoping for next weekend. I'm going to try to test run the motor this weekend and get final radio instal done and then I think I'm gonna get someone else to fly it first. Then give it a go and see what happens.

One wing down, one to go. I forgot how long it takes to get one of these things covered. I'm gonna paint from now on I think.

Nope, that's 2.5", I just changed the front end a little to dirty it up a little. The last one of the I flew was a rocket.
