I'm gonna go up to Andersonville and watch but probably won't compete 'till Tangerine or J'ville. You going to Andersonville? I wanna see the Tempest.

I'll be there yes, but I don't know if I'm bringing the plane. I probably will, if everything checks out ok.
I had to replace the engine, that 3M was too fussy for my taste. I put an OS in it. So if it runs ok tomorrow, I'll test fly it Monday morning. And assuming everything is ok, I'll start trimming it out. IF I get that done and get comfy with it by Andersonville, then I'll bring it with me, and maybe even compete. I don't expect to win, I haven't flown much in the last year. (I suck right now). But I'll be there, regardless.
So like.....be there!

Cool Mike, I'll see ya there. Got a lot done this afternoon, got the hor. and vert stabs glued in. You can see my piece of 1/32" balsa I had to add for the stab not being wide enough. Also got my formers ready to do the turtledeck tonight and finish the canopy.

Got the deck done and rough sanded, canopy almost done and almost to shape. Now I really have to do some shaping of the nose, mount the landing gear and start putting the guts in.
I learned that I'm not going to use 1/8" and 1/4" balsa for the decks anymore, too much sanding and trimming, I'll go to thinner and more pliable stuff like SigK and Mhester do theirs. This way is sturdy but on the bigger planes it would weigh about 25lbs.

Last pic for the weekend. Everything rough sanded and rough fit, Root ribs and dowels in wings just taped on and stuck together. The aluminum gear may have to go though it looks kinda crappy. Gonna take a brake and breath some air that isn't tan from balsa dust!

Tom,...
Your Desire is looking real good!! I'm starting to get jealous, maybe I should start building one of my own!! Keep up the good work and keep the construction photos coming!!
I'm interested in how you attached the fiberglass canopy? Also, where did you purchase the canopy/turtle deck from? And if you don't mind me asking, what did it cost?
Also, where did you get the foam cores? I got a couple sets of Desire cores from Dynamic Balsa Supply (?), but those are for a one piece wing. I assume you cut an inch and a half or two inches from the root of each wing core to make the two piece wing?
Thanks again for the inspiration and the desire to get back building again!!

RE: Desire 60 build, first jig built balsa.
I got the cores and fiberglass from Flywilly here on the forum. We did some trading so I can't give you an exact cost but it was somewhere in the $100.00 range. These are the older cores that came from McConville I guess because the fiberglass isn't available anywhere else that I know of. I attached the canopy with 2 1/8" dowels in the front and a 6/32 screw on the top rear. I's not a very pretty way to attach it but it will do for now. I did cut 1.5" from the roots of the cores to get them to length.
SigK, not a marathon just had plenty of free time this weekend and want to get it in the air ASAP to have something to fly!
Servos, receiver and trans. should come this week. As soon as the bearings come from Boca I'll put them in and install the motor for a test run.

A tip on canopy attachment...
The 1/8" wood dowels may not stand up to the vibration and will eventually wear. 1/16" music wire into yellow Sullivan pushrod material will hold up much better. Just CA a 1/4" piece of pushrod into your existing 1/8" holes, cut your dowels flush and drill the centers for the 1/16" music wire. Shaping the wire to a blunt point will aid in installing the canopy.

I thought I heard somewhere that Flying Models was now defunct, is that true? Is there another place to buy plans for it? Seeing it with fixed gear got me to thinking about how much it looks like a ZNLine Synergy... [>:]

It's kinda on hold now. Need to find another YS 61RE for it. When I took mine apart to put the new bearing in it I discovered it was total crap. Now I have to decide if I want to put another 61 on it, to use for this plane only, or build something bigger.

RE: Desire 60 build, first jig built balsa.
Get an OS 91 FX. Since you are still in the building phase it is easy to modify the nose.
You can use the same pipe ment for YS 61. Karl Muller makes great wrap-around headers. Haven't seen one but the word is out that they are best there is.
I was in the same situation three years ago. With the amount of money to fix the YS I bought 91 FX and have never looked back. The OS has more hours than that YS ever did. Hatori #650 + 10% nitro + APC 14-10. Great vertical performance with 8+ lbs. You'll like it.
BTW, it is a good idea to have a rehearse plane even if you build something larger.

Ini, I had given that some though. I even thought about a MVVS 91 because they can be run as a R.E. I'll make a decision by Tuesday.
thanks, Tom

Tom,
get an opinion from a user of bothe engines before deciding.
I do not have any experience on MVVS, but I have to say that OS 91 FX in the second sweetest engine (after OS 1.40 RX) I have ever used.
That includes tens of engines in 25 years, eg. OS, Irvine, Webra, TT, Enya, Saito, HP, Super Tigre, YS 2c, YS 4C etc. etc.
My 91 FX has given me only two dead sticks: once the plug got blown (you should replace it at least once a season) and the other time was when I tested Cline regulator (it did not work).
With the stock muffler you might need a pump but with a pipe it is fine (more tank pressure). With a small restricting muffler (Pitts etc.) it runs hot and causes problems.
