Hello I think 9650 servo is not a good option for a pattern plane , I am sure that 9402 is going to be safer to your plane.

Depends on where you are running them. I am running 2 of them on the elevators of my new airplanes. They are more than capable of running an elevator half. I know some of the guys flying bipes are even running them on the ailerons. I wouldn't run them on ailerons of a monoplane.

I'm using them too on my Electric Lazulite elevator halves.
Did you notice any gear gap on them? Have you replaced at any time the gear set?

I'm using them too in the stab, engine is an OS 140 RX with MK soft mount. No problems at all.
You may want to pay attention to the control linkages, I think they are very important to get consistent surface response. The more the mechanical advantage, the less the stress to the servo - and more precise and solid surfaces!

Is the free play around the centre normal for these servos? For the price they should be much tighter. Do they cause any problems in your split elevator applications?

Actually they have some free play, I like you expected a tighter servo, considering its price.
I don't have experience with other setups, but they are ok I think.
Many top pilots use them, so I guess they are good
Any comparison with JR mini's, regarding gear train?
