venus II or the showtime 90
I am looking for something to practice pattern flying I have a saito 120, what do you guys think is the better plane the venus or the showtime90. I am trying to keep the price down, since this is new to me. I am open to any suggestions, wish there were some pattern flyers in my club. I have a 91 four stroke also and thought of the wm intruder but dont like the wm covering. thanks for any help.

Venus II, on sale now at Tower for $220.
Venus has that "locked-in" feel, unlike the Showtime which is a hybrid semi-precision/3D. I have the Venus and have flown the Showtime, and there is no comparison.
The O.S. 1.20 4-stroker flies it with good authority (heavier than Saito, yes, but gobs more ooomph), and I've read that with the YS 1.10 you'll be all set for F3A.

I will buck the tide and throw in a vote for the Showtime. Not knocking the Venus II, but I've seen it in practice and competition and so far not been overly impressed. Even though I was a huge fan of the Venus I. Showtime on the other hand looks good in the hands of both rookies and pros. Eric Henderson was boosting the Showtime a couple issues back in MA. Could be the Venus II is capable of better flying than what I've seen so far, but I'm happy as can be with my Showtime and its zero rudder coupling. If this will be your first pattern plane, either one will give you a good start.

Why not start flying pattern with a sport acrobatic plane that reduces your intial cost, A Koas for example, or any other sport acrobatic plane can do alot of the pattern manuvers with the right throws.

I've been back in to some of the SPA stuff this summer-------some of the same ships I flew "back when".
My, my how times have changed! Fun when flown against others of their generation but hopelessly outclassed by the new designs-------------even some of the "Sport" type new designs will show it the door.

Got to agree, onewasp. I've been flying only for a couple of years, but I've had the chance to take the sticks of some older pattern types such as the Kaos and there is no comparison. Even got to fly a Curare with a fiberglass fuse. It was fun, but can't hold a candle to the Venus and I'm sure it is lightyears behind modern thorobreds like Black Magic, Shinden, Oxalys etc.

RE: venus II or the showtime 90
Well, thanks to my great luck, I won the Venus II / OS120 plane that I built for my clubs raffle plane and, having owned a Showtime 90, can now chime in...
I definately would vote for the Venus II! I've only got about 4 flights on it now but it definately has a much more locked-in feel than the Showtime. The OS has all the power you need to power it through BIG round loops and the plane tracks exactly where you want it to go. It pulls a little to the belly in both right and left KE flight which is easily mixed out. So far after only a few flights my overwhelming impression is Rock-Solid
The Showtime always felt a little gittery to me which I attribute to it's huge control surfaces. I always felt a little behind it all the time and always had trouble nailing 3-point landings. I had a lot of time to play with it (mixing, etc.) and ended up selling it to a 'fly in big ovals' club member who, like me, liked it's looks. He's very happy with it.
So in my opinion, despite not liking it's looks, the Venus II is the sheiss for Pattern in this comparison.

Al, try it with an APC 14x10 pattern prop and you will also notice a difference. I know a lot of guys are using the 15x8 but the Venus benefits from the pitch speed and the OS has enough torque to pull it through a very long vertical with no sweat. I'm even thinking about trying a 14x12.

Strongly agree. Was led to believe showtime90 is a good pattern practice plane by highly-regarded posts on RCU and purchased a showtime90. Disappointed at its pattern capability, with lack of tracking and stability being the biggest problem. Besides, the landing gear supporting area in the fuse is pretty weak.

Waydago Chris! That's got to feel good! Tell us about your set-up. Looks like JR servos, YS power... what about throws, mixes? What about your practice routine, coaching?

Setup is:
Y.S. 110s
Hyde soft mount
DS821 Digitals on ailerons and elevaters
DS8411SA on Rudder
5 Cell 2700 nimh receiver pack
Earl Haury helped me setup up the engine, and fuel systems. Helped me break in the engine also. I havn't really had any coaching yet as i've only flown the plane like 14 times (i'm new to pattern).

If you look up the results of the 2007 Tangerine pattern icontest n Florida you will see I took third in advanced with a Venus II ARF. It was loaned to me Friday morning before the contest and I felt just great with it in 2 flights. A week later I flew a Composite ARF IMPACT with a state of the art electric setup (A copy of Jason Shulmans 2005 Nats plane) and felt no advantage with it over the Venus 2. The Venus I flew was also electric but I built one with a OS 1.20 and was very pleased with it.

Just recevied the VENUS II and plan to use a YS110 and a Hyde mount on it.
Can somebody comment on this question: will the stock muffler with YS110 generate acceptable level of noise for pattern competition?
