I agree with David Cutler.
FlyFalcons,
I will disagree with you,,
I own 3 LAs and they have less power, loose screws all the time,
won't run upside down, the 65LA is about the same as a 46FX.(POWER)
They arn't worth saving 50$ if you want power, either go with FX or go get a Super Tiger!
I will never buy an LA again.
I am an O.S. buyer, in-fact all I have is O.S. engines. I have 3 LAs and 3FXs.
I know this stuff, And I would always go with an FX over a LA.
Oh and the only thing I've seen you fly an L.A. on FlyFalcons is a PBF.

Super Tigres used to be the only real choice where raw power was needed above anything else - control line speed or free flight competition. A bit like Nelsons in modern pylon racing or control line combat.
It was also the only engine that could handle pressure feed in the 60s and 70s.
I believe they are now owned / made in the Far East, but still are great examples of engineering.

Paul, the fact is you have never run a 65LA and have never seen mine run. Can a 46FX turn a 13x8? NO.......... You are prejudice against the 65LA because of the weak 40 and 46, but you should have experience with one before you comment on it.
And my PBF has a Supertigre. Again, you need to know what is going on before you can comment.

Unfortunately I have a tower 61 bb on this plane. Not to say it doesn't make the plane do 127mph(radar gun)! But the engine has a hard time slowing down to idle. All though I've never had a deadstick to me is more important.
Other than that the plane is absolutely amazing. The respose on this plane is incredible and sharp. For pattern flying it's probably the best plane I've flown. The landings can get some getting used to.Fromthe fact that the wings are so thin.I use the airbrake switch(full spoil,up elevator) some times if I come in to hot.
I do have about 6oz of weight in the tail, taht I'll probably be removing.I'm going to move my battery and servos aft!
By the way the plane was named after the man who came up with pattern short hand!
And you guys stop bickering about engines. If it works for you use the heck out of it.If not then don't!No mud slinging. This is all for fun, period.Unless you do it for income, then thats a different story. But it should still be fun!

I have a 65LA on my old Trainer,,
I promise that a 46 FX with a 10\6 would be as powerful as a 65LA
So no,, You are wrong.
I do have this engine and I would not say such a strong statement if I didn't.
Tell it to the Judge..

A 46FX does not have the pull of a 65LA by a long shot. Regardless of horsepower ratings, it swings a larger prop and pulls harder. Unless you think a 46FX can swing a 12x6 at 14K? Or even attempt to swing a 13x8? In addition, a buggy .21 engine can be rated at 2 HP (and many are). Do you think one of those is more powerful for airplane use than a strong .46, also rated near 2 HP? No, because the .21 would be spinning a small, inefficient prop at high RPMs to get that horsepower. The same is the case with the larger 60 engine. It may be rated the same HP but in the real world there is no comparison. The 65LA on my QHOR will pull it straight up harder than any .46FX, just ask anyone who has seen it fly. In fact the vertical is just about the same as my friend's Magnum 75-powered QHOR. The MAN article even shows the 65LA to be more powerful than the 61FX. I guess I'll keep the secret of one of the best 60 size engines out there; just because the engine says LA on the side doesn't mean anything in the real world.

I saw a Tai Ji 40 go today, looked very nice. Not a big fan of the small retracts on grass but once in the air it flew very well. On grass I'll stick with my Majestic (no tendancy to nose over with the stock gear/wheels) but the Tai Ji is certainly a good one. I've also flown an Aresti but the one I flew needed speed to do a good knife edge. Saito 72 gave it plenty of power.

Scott Claboe-
I have that same combo!!! what are the chances huh? Mine does idle well though... But I had to expiriment with glow plugs and fuel till I found a match.. Maybe you can do the same try a few diffrent glow plugs and fuel... And the plane does fly well! I use a 12x6 on mine a little slower but suits my taste fine.

Rogwabbit,
Do you mean the motor did not idle well at first and then after experimenting it did?If so I'm currently using a O.S. #8 and Omega 15%.
I agree with Ryan the plane does needs good speed for knife edge!Other than that I think everyone who has flown one knows how bada** this plane flies!

Yes.. I went to 10% on mine because it was running so hot that it pre-ignited the fuel at idle and caused it to stop. It would run, but then all of a sudden just quit... No sign of too rich or too lean just plain out quit... One other problem I noticed was I had a faulty front barring leaking air.. I called tower and they replaced it for me... Try 10% and the plug you have or maybe the A3... you may also have luck with the Enya plugs... #4 I think.

I did a review of the "Venus" on my site, at http://homepage.mac.com/mikejames/rc...us40arf01.html last year.
It's a fun plane to fly, and a good deal for the price.

Has anyone tried mounting the engine in the Venus at a 90 from the top (side mount). I would think mounting a OS 50SX sideways with a Pitts muffler would eliminate any fuel tank issue.

The hardware used in that plane won't be anywhere near what you get in a GP kit...
And besides, the Venus looks sooooo sexy...

Nothing difficult had to be done to fit it, and there's probably less cutting to do on the cowling.

If you go to the RCU magazine I just did a full blown review on the Great Planes Venus 40 ARF with online video of it flying!

I thought that the good ones were made in China...
hahaha
P.S.
I'm still an IMAC person but for a Pattern plane these two planes look
like some of the best choices for your money.$$$

Did TT have some poor quality tanks in some of their ARF's? The Imagine and the Aresti look like nice pattern type planes, as does the Venus. It will be interesting to learn more about the Imagine.
