Well I didn't crash or get any Zero's so it was wildly successful for me.
Sat morning was a great day to spend in the bed then waking up at the crack of noon.
Flying got started around 1pm on Sat with plenty of clouds and wind and cold. Sunday was bright and shiny with higher winds and not as cold but still chilly. Landings were tricky to say the least. Lots of zero's were handed out in every class, all pilots that made go arounds on landing made the right decision, no contest is worth an airplane. Flying was very good in all classes. Watching Joey Hayes and Chris Moon fly they make electrics look very tempting. Many were impressed with their airplanes.
The Flying Tigers Club put on a great contest and was well attended by club members doing all behind the scenes work. My hats off to all of them.

Deaspite the fowl weather the contest was great!
Sunday mornings first round was eventful for me,..as the conopy hatch on the Partner ejected the front pins on the canopy hatch, resulting in a canopy departure as I was pulling into the the reverse Humpty. No damage was done to either the plane or the canopy,..the canopy was actually blown back to the field and landed in the center of the runway,..how lucky was that.
The pins were replaced quickly and off to round two we went.
Conrats to all the pilots, the winners, runner ups' and the Dist Champions for 2008. We even had a FAI pilot to compete that came all the way from Alaska. I can't wait for 2009s' season to start.
Thanks to all the pilots that traveled long distances within the district to compete.
Thanks to Blair Page the contest CD and the Flying Tigers Club for hosting the Dist2 Championships,...well done!

Bill,
I don't want to leave out Chris Moon for honorable mentions. Chris has been invaluable to this district and has provided me with a plethora of guidance for my first year as VP as well as being a great mentor for other pilots. Also, Joey Hayes was the recipient of the 2008 Man of th Year award, so I want to be sure that gets recognized as well. I couldn't think of a more deserving, humble person to receive it, and I'm proud to call Joey my friend. I want to congratulate everyone, and hope to see most, if not all, of you before Green Sea. If anyone is interested in road tripping in December, I think some of us are going to go down to the Tangerine. If anyone from D2 is interested, get in touch with me and let's see what we can come up with.
Take care guys!

Hey Tim,
You had a "very" good flight as did Blair and brian, there wasn't much that seperated you 3 according to my score card other than little things. I had it scored differently than the outcome,....was a great flight,...hey wasn't I calling for you on that 977 you posted?
See you soon,....lets get a schedule for off season practice together with everyone,...maybe once a month,.....the whole crew![8D]

Hey Ryan,
I too have plans to go to the Tangerine if my Element is or not. I have to talk the wife into letting our daughter miss school on friday and monday,...kindergarten,... what can she miss?
I was un-aware of the additional guidance from Mr.moon,............righ-on,.......a great addition to the district,..once more as I understand.
As for Joey,......could'nt agree more,...a super,.super nice guy and great pilot,....wish I actually knew Joey better. And very deserving of "Man of the Year" as Terry did last year.

I enjoy seeing all the crew from one contest to another, some I know better than others. I should make a point to get to know everyone a little better,..I'm stand-offish by nature and not stuck up, nor do I bite.
Thanks for bringing that to everyone's attention.[8D]

Hey Tom,
That's a great photo,.....!

For those that didn't know the front two pins for the canopy came out,...why,.. don't know? Never had a problem with the pins to this point,..maybe it was the wind?
Thanks for the photo Tom,...will add that to my collection.

It's always good to get feed back from different callers and judges. They can sit back and see the things we, as fliers, tend not to see.
I watched Blair fly most of his rounds and you could tell he was far more comfortable with his Brio as the rounds went along. It's hard to explain but it appeared to me he got less timid with the airplane. Flying very well I might add.
Ryan, Bill, Tom, Dale, et al, Do you guys tend to "See" the maneuver being flown in your mind as you judge?
As I fly I try to "See" the Reverse Cuban eight, for instance, as I fly it and take the airplane around that "picture" in the sky.

Hey Tim,
To answer your question,...not in my mind,..I look at the lines, radius or radai of a maneuvor being done, while keeping the center line in sight. Like a loop for example,...when a loop is started I can see or visually correct the loop as it's being flown by another pilot or not correct it all if its a good loop. I guess in a sense my eye balls see a loop as a loop is flown and that enables me to see vertical drift, a pinch or flat spots, etc. but I don't keep the aresti in my head,..do study them pretty hard for all the classes.
For me it's difficult to explain, because I see so much of the airspace at one time. I can focus on several poits at one time, previous and the present. Now in saying that, if the entire program is just all over the place with no regards to lines or symetery or position and flown at mach 2 from start to finish it makes it really easy to see. I think it is more difficult to judge a very polished pilot no matter what class they fly with respect to the flight program they fly,..other than the obvious oops.
I find for myself, when I fly,.. I will find additional reference points in addition to the box lines. Like a tree line, I will use that as an entry and exit reference or a reference for rolling circles or loops. That helps me alot,.....that's something Kirk G. tought me years ago,..works great for me (something I rcently had to re-learn
). Our reverse cuban eight,.. I took several practice flights on friday to find my reference points at each start and end point of the 8, left box, right box. That gave me several things, if my radius was correct I hit my line and the center maneuvor,...etc,..etc. Now with the wind we had and by hitting my marks, I could adjust driving the aircraft through the symetery portion of the maneuvor (half loops) to adjust for the rage'in wind. I didn't execute it perfect everytime, but I had a reference to adjust to and from and fort the most part I was all over it.
I explained that because, I do that also for judging,...not using my marks,..lol,..but by using simple reference point available helps.
Don't know if that answers you question.
Yes,..I agree Blair was getting less and less gun shy and built up confidence in the plane based on his recent bad luck! Plus,..he was still dialing in the plane throughout the entire contest.

I hate it that I had to miss this one, but the D3 districts left my funds sort of depleted. Hopefully I'll see most of you at the Tangerine though?

It was cool because neither the airplane nor the canopy sustained any damage, and the wind was such that that it blew it to the center of the runway. Pretty cool.
And I hope to see you at the Tangerine, Mike. Are we flying the '09 AMA sequences down there?
