Lots of engines are available. And if you are thinking of the 120 sized models (around 72 inch wingspan) even more fall into this range.

Boy did I open a can of worms. I purchased a used 2M pattern plane that came with an OS1.40RX that I may have to replace. Didn't realize so many available. So let me re-phrase my question.

Of all the engines generally used in this size plane. Which one provides the best bang for the buck. If the reality is that I will only be doing "fun" pattern type flying; which engine would you suggest. thanks.

Why do you want to get rid of the 140RX? That and the YS 140 are in my opinion, the most sought after engine for F3A.

It's a long story; but I don't want to get rid of it. It is in for repair at Hobby Services right now and I am just thinking ahead in case the repair bill will be to high.

Your Used 2M plane is setup for a OS140. I assume you mean the OS140RX, with the normal needle value setup. This limits your choices. What engine mount are your running?

The YS engines are heavier than the OS140RX and putting one in would change your CG. Also you may need a new engine mount and maybe a different tuned pipe.

I would suggest the following:

Have 2 OS140 so get a second one. Many people have a second engine or plane when they fly contests.

Or maybe the Mintor 140 or the Webra 145. These should fit what you have with little CG change and maybe only a change to the nose ring. I believe the Webra 145 is the lower priced option; but not by much.

Oh Jez... and a few thousand people have just shelled out a fortune buying the 1.40 DZ thinking it was king of the hill.

Nothing new, I was just about to place an order with ZN for a Hydeway... then the Double Vision appeared. Boy was I happy I hadn't signed the contract and bought yesterdays technology.

Is the 160DZ really going to happen then? Last I heard it was just an experimental engine used at Romilly by a few of the top guys. Note experimental not prototype...

I hope this sport doesnt turn into something like Formula One. Although... a lot of people all ready feel that way about it.

For the most part these current engines have plenty of power for the schedules up through masters. You just gotta be easy on over building and not creating too much weight. A 9.5 to 10lb airplane will fly well even with a 1.20 size engine for most of the schedules.

That's pretty much what pattern is. You have the best pilots in the world and the highest technology. Sure it's pricey but that's the cost of the cutting edge.

Just wait till YS comes out with pneumatic actuated valves and makes the Direct Injection electronic. We are at just the tip of the iceberg.

Default Bang for the buck for fun

Steve,
If you intend to use the airplane only for fun and self improvement, then you really can't go wrong with the OS160.

For the sport flyer it has several advantages as follows:

1. Inexpensive

2. Runs nicely on 5-10% nitro

3. Is happy with a full length muffler instead of a tuned pipe resulting in no a hassle, non-peaky motor.

4. Is not more difficult to tune than a OS.46FX.

Personally, I run the OS140EFI and the YS140DZ, but the OS160 is right behind them, especially when hooked up with the Cline Regulator.

YS 160 is experimental... which means it is just that. It will be some time if it sees the light of day, if at all. Certainly the prototypes are in the right hands! YS have attempted twins and even radials, incase you didn't know that...

splais - having owned, and run, the YS 1.40, OS 1.40 and 1.60, ST 2300, Webra 1.45 RX, I think your decision runs into these issues:
(I have a Mintor 1.40 arriving tomorrow)

1. If you DON'T want to rework your current nose ring and mounting system, the OS 1.40 and Mintor 1.40 are drop in's...even the needle valve is in the same place.
2. If you don't mind reworking the exhaust section - try to find a YS 1.40 L version used....it's bullet proof, proven, and produces outstanding power (with the expense of pretty frequent maintenance)
3. If you don't mind reworking the mount, and the exhaust system, the OS 1.60 FX (not EFI) version is probably OVERALL the most cost-effective power for price. It turns a helluva prop, at decent rpm on relatively low nitro, and is easy to setup and tune, but you will need an Iron Bay or Cline "pressure flow regulator".
4. If you are after absolute BOTTOM dollar, and don't mind reworking mount AND exhaust, then the newest ST 2300 is outstanding. You'll need the regulator mentioned above, but it will spin a 17 x 10 on a pipe near 8000 on 25% nitro....and NEW the thing costs $199 from Tower.

There are LOTS of powerful choices out there....

Steve,

OS140RX is fine for your setup.

All you need to see the engine running again and practice.
It will be just fine.

As a second engine you can go with OS160FX and a wrap around header!

Of course we use YS140DZ but for the planes below.

I am flying a Gator R/C G-202 with a ST-2300....Cline regulator and love it. best of all engine is $199.99 and is easy to get parts for if you need them.....Enjoy!!!!

Default Moki 1.35

I wonder why the Moki 1.35 doesn't seem to make these lists? I have one and am very pleased. I get over 8000 rpm on a Zinger Pro 18 x 8 with 5% nitro. The engine is extraordinarily reliable: I have never landed dead stick. I think it uses 1.1 oz of fuel per minute at full throttle. I saw a post a while back that said an APC 16 x 10 or 11 was used with this engine in someone's pattern plane with good results. They ended the post with why pay $600 for an engine when the Moki is around. Anyone else using the Moki?

I think the reason why most people arnt using the moki is because they need to install regulators or stuff. Its supposed to be powerfull- 15 lbs of static thrust on straight fuel.I have bought my first Moki 180 but havent run it yet. looking forward to it.
How do you install Cline regulators e.t.c if you waht your tank on the center of gravity? What is needed?

hey is the dubble-vision really a better plane than the hydeaway......if it is i'm gonna get a dubble vision!!!!......i hear chip was gonna fly the DV at ireland and use a DA-50......yould a os 140 RX work too i asume so.

A few guys have tried the Mintor 140 and none have continued with it.

For straight pattern engines, I would stick with the OS 140 RX or the YS 140L or 140 DZ.

This is based on our experience here in NZ.

Default Hobby Services Actually Surprised Me; Not Happy, But surprised!!!

I got the estimate back on the repair of the OS1.40RX. $435.00!!! The engine was basically shot: bearings, piston, cylinder and pump, all kaput.

The surprise was when Hobby Services says they would give me an engine replacement for $270, which I estimate was near cost. I guess when they figure you already bought a $450 engine, you should get some sort of brake after it gets worn out quickly.

Anyway, not happy; but $270 is better than the $400+ for any engine I could have gotten as a replacement. The repair bill of $435 was all parts. the labor charge was only $45.
