Default Glo-Driver

Dansy:

What do you need with one of these? You have a good Radio South Driver.

What exactly does this thing do that a Ni-starter doesn't?

Rick,
Larger 4-stroke motors, be it DZs, Ls, or even large Saitos have this habit of kicking hard against the starter. Normally this does not create big problems, but it is hard on the connecting rod, and in one of our friends in Finland, he actually cracked his honeycomb firewall and fuselage when his DZ kicked hard on starting (that was a big problem).

A great way to avoid this is to get the motor spinning before the glow driver applies the heat to the plug. Now, if you always have somebody available to plug in the remote lighter while you crank, it is not an issue, but to be self sufficeint, the easiest way is to use this timed glow driver. Here is how it works.

Have your starter ready. Reach over and switch on the glow driver. Start spinning the motor. After a few seconds (the timing between lights is adjustable as well as the voltage administered to the plug), the ready light comes on and then the glow light which show that now the plug is being powered. The motor fires up smoothly with no hard kick back and it is much easier on the internal parts of the motor and the frontal area of the engine.

There are methods to do this with normal equipment. Najary uses a switch he hold in his hand while he grips the landing gear. When he gets his motor spinning he activates the switch lighting the plug.

This unit from K's Products simply offeres a very nicely packaged unit that allows hands free operation, adjustable timing, adjustable glow power, and has a long lasting battery inside with a charging recepticle. It really is a very well made piece of field equipment with aluminum case.

Radio South could very easily incorporate a timing circuit into their Pro-Glow unit and it would provide the same service.

That's about it.

When I was racing nitro R/C hydros years ago, we used to deal with a similar problem by loosening the plug a bit on the big engines (.90 and up) before starting, then snugging it down after the engine started. It was mainly to get past the high compression stroke on the big engines. I guess that would be impractical with the inverted YS engine though.

Default Glo-Driver

Dansy: You don't need a timed glo-driver unless you switch to Y.S.!-
