Due to my recent round of "bad luck" trying to get into a larger 90 or 120 size pattern plane; I have resigned myself to 40 size airplanes, ha!!
One of the planes that I am considering is the Boxer 45. Has anyone had experience with this plane?? If so,... what are your impressions of this plane?? What engine was used and what weight did the plane come in at??
Any information, or opinions on this design would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Sincerely,
Steve T.

Beau-
"What happened to the Great Escape? .... Please tell me all is well!"
Well,... like I said in my previous post, "I seem to have run into some bad luck with larger pattern birds" I lost the Great Escape first time out with it!
Was having engine trouble, as the 91 Surpass wouldn't stay running after idling during a long down line. I made four deadstick landings with it that morning and the last one just didn't make it back to the field.
It still hurts to talk about it, ha!!

Steve, I flew a Boxer 45 for about three seasons about six years ago. It was powered by a YS 45 w/a Hatori pipe turning an 11X10 APC at about 9500-10,000 rpm. I'm not sure of the weight, but it was right around the lower recomendation on the plans.
It's a wonderful design, draws lovely lines in the sky, stable but ready to snap when you tell it to. Knife edge was a revelation to me, took very little rudder and mine displayed no coupling of any sort that I could detect. It's the first airplane I ever managed to pull vertical, do a half stall turn and fly out in knife edge!
The way it's designed makes it pretty easy to build straight and light. The plans, patterns, and instruction manual are superb.
I guess you can tell I liked mine, lol

Strat2003,...
Thank you very much for the "Glowing Recommendation"!! Makes me feel confident that I did indeed pick a winner!!
Did you have retracts on your Boxer or fixed gear?? I am definitely a fourstroke guy and am thinking about using a Saito 80. Whatchya think??
Once again,... thank you for the reply!!

I built mine with fixed gear on recomendation from the guys at Salient Designs, it seems that weight is very important on that size plane. They also said there might be a problem with balance using a non-piped .45, so you might want to look very carefully at using the Saito. It's really designed for the YS, and if you use something else you'll have to move the tank up to the front compartment and that will cause some balance problems, too.
