Composite fuselage
After several months working on a composite fuselage for Vortex we have seen the first fuselages come out of the molds
One for been used as electric and the other one for been used with Gas-glow engines . Pictures soon |

Nice, can you describe the layup, construction?
|
Thanks for your interest! The layup’s quite simple: glass / Herex / glass, 50gr/sqm inner and depends on the version 50 or 100gr/sqm outer side. Then 200gr/sqm carbon in the front area outer side with some reinforcements here and there for the undercarriage and engine/motor area. Cabin and under belly glass 50 + 100gr/sqm.

Could you please tell me, if there is a glow version of the balsa/wood Vortex version ?
If yes, how is the engine mounted ? KR, Christian |

Has anyone else done a glow conversion ?
I am looking for plans, not for a kit (frequent_flyer (Don) offers kits only). Thanks and KR, Christian |
Hello everyone,
I'm Rainer from Germany and at the end of February I started to mill Alex's beautiful Vortex. So far I have milled all the plywood and the 3mm balsa. The hull is built up so far that I can start with the 2mm balsa planking, I'm just waiting for another delivery of balsa to make the cable duct from 0.8mm balsa and glue it in. I will post a picture this afternoon. But I have a question about the undercarriage. On the pictures it looks like a Falcon undercarriage, but what height is needed if you want to run a 22" propeller? CLG001 with 200 mm height (upper surface to Center of Wheel Axle) CLG002 with 216 mm height (upper surface to Center of Wheel Axle) or CLG004 with 234mm height (upper surface to Center of Wheel Axle) I hope the holes in the landing gear mount correspond to the pre-drilled Falcon landing gear legs. Thanks Rainer |
Mine is the composite version. I measured about 213mm from axle to upper surface. This provides plenty of ground clearance for 23" props. Your mount may be different though.

Hello Dan,
thanks for the info. I'll wait and see if someone else writes something about it. But 213 mm seems to fit very well. I will measure that. I don't think I can add any pictures yet as this is only my second post. Thanks Rainer |

There are pictures of the construction of the vortex |
Hi all
Wish you all a Merry Christmas After building and flying all my lovely classic patterns, I finally got free time to build a Alex outstanding design “Vortex”. I had downloaded both STL files of the outer shell of the plane for a composite job and DXF files for woodworking some years ago but can’t find them on my computer. neither can find them in this thread again. does anyone have the STL outer shell files or DXF files? I really like to go for STL and making a mold for my self to make a composite plane. my email : [email protected] regards |

You can find everything you need for the updated version a bit higher in post #296. Here's the direct link: https://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/12758639-post296.html Best regards, Alex |
