Abbra 2m pattern arf
1 Attachment(s)
this new 2m widebody pattern plane is completely molded and pre built by the company in Czek that produces the Rhapsody. The wing/stab is installed - no guess work, cf landing gear batt/rec/servo tray and tailpost are installed. wheel pants weigh 17g. Just add firewall for desired engine. The abbra is designed for zdz40re gas engine and escomposites cf gas pipe which is completely enclosed. This setup is under 11lb. your friends will not know which engine you have untill you pull verticle and push stick forward. There is also an electric version kit 6oz lighter. The abbra is painted in the mold to save weight and is very fuel proof. personalized 3 or 4 color schemes will be available soon, simply supply a drawing. The plane I inspected last week was very simular in size and shape to the impact. The wings/stab slid on absolutely perfect, very clean. The workmanship is super quality. Escomposite.com is the US dealer for these kits. There website is not updated yet but you can call today and place order. Best of all there is a 6 week delivery time and the price is only $1500. I am not sponsored and will pay full price, just think this will be a real winner!

RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
Thats pretty nice. What prop are you running with that setup? do you have a contact email, info, etc on these planes? www.ecomposites.com site is down.

RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
This seems like Deja Vous but of course it has to happen -
what will the pattern guys do with that much power on tap? |
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
Same thing we've done for the last couple years: develop a phobia of full throttle ;>
|
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
This looks like my cup of tea!~) Are you getting one Pizza? What other engines is it designed for? You say it has a firewall that can be adjusted?Mmmmmmmmm!

RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
They'll run a prop as big as they want, and they will be able to run FOREVER for a buck....*we* know, don't we???
How is the vibration handled, Pizza??? |
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
Very nice looking. I was going to say something about it being a 1 piece wing until I looked at the large version of the second pic. How much would a ZDZ 40 with that pipe setup cost? What size prop would one look at swinging?

If the Abbra offers the same quality, fit and finish as the Rhapsody, this will be another welcome addition to the Pattern Community. As for power, I'd like mine to come with the ZDZ 40RE Gas Engine, Walbro Carb and the KS tuned can & header kit.

Bob -the idle vibration on the gassers is being addressed - my Rotos are smoother than most glow two strokes - not to mention the evil 4 BANGERS.
(that was a bit nasty ) anyway - the ignition curves are being retailored thanks to addressable chips in the new ignitions . also -my ROTO ignition saves and reads out rpm from flight - (terrific tuning tool!) all at the cost of less than half that of the perfect pattern engines ---( under $400) We didn't give up on the 40 concept --- just re aimed our approach - new plane is a "bit" different here is a profile view you may scoff but it has extremely good response and control even at very low speeds like hovers etc... |
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
Pizza,
Having re-read your post  and looking at the pics provided, you make mention of using "The zdz 40re gas engine and escomposites cf gas pipe which is completely enclosed", can you tell me what RPM range and what size props you expect to use with your tuned setup? _________ Schpankme |
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
www.escomposites.com is correct - you had it spelled wrong. The Abbra comes with a very light weight carbon fiber landing gear with a 24" prop clearance for big gas and electric props. The new Axi outrunner (largest size) will work great on this plane - no gearbox = less noise. you can install any propular engine os, ys, etc but the zdz40re is the number one choice among european modelers. yes it has explosive power, but you will get used to it - it took me 3 months of flying - it requires a different throttle management protocal. once you become comfortable with this power there is no going back - you will wonder how you got by with an under powered os or ys. I flew my zdz pattern plane for one season with no maintenace concerns, no needle adjustment, no bearing replacement, just 3 flips and go. you can fly for 30 minutes on 14oz of gas you will save 100's of dollars on glow fuel savings. ed has designed his cf pipe for this engine to give a nice linear throttle response for pattern. this engine will swing a wide variety of prop sizes and brands. In europe they like 3 bladers for constant speed, good down line braking and noise. during noise testing we discovered that most of the noise on these gas engines comes from the carburator - ed is developing a carbon fiber intake muffler when used in conjunction with quiet prop and cf muffler you won't hear anything. we also discovered through testing that there is a big difference between soft mounting and rubber mounting an engine. a soft mount (hyde mount) helps with noise but doesn't really reduce vibration that much over hard mount because of rocking. mounting the engine with 4 rubber wellnuts reduces airframe noise and cuts vibration considerably. rubber mounting does not allow the engine to rock and break headers.

RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
The Abbra comes with a nice cf firewall that you will have to sand and install based on which engine application you choose. this is the only building required. the most efficient engine mount for zdz40 is to hard mount it to a cf plate slightly smaller than firewall diameter then attatch 4 rubber wellnuts to this plate in the outer corners, then attatch this plate with wellnuts to firewall. actually the wellnuts should not be in the outter corners but in a certain optimal pattern with one wellnut near engine - this will cancell vibration and noise almost completely. we will have pics to follow. you can get a zdz40re from RC Showcase for about $399, ed's cf 40cc gas pipe is $250, the wellnuts are aerobob price approved 55 cents each and weigh almost nothing compared to a hyde soft mount. I settled on a 3w 20x8 prop but I like to 3d, a good starting prop would be one that will turn 6500rpm at full throttle at your elevation - probably a 22x10 at sealevel.

Here's how the two blade and three blade props work out for the ZDZ 40RE Gas Engine.
Note - For those requiring more speed, you will need to decrease Diameter and increase Pitch to maintain the same prop load. Two Blade: 21x12 @ 6500 RPM = 75 mph 20x14 @ 6500 RPM = 85 mph _________ Schpankme |
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
Just a note, RC Showcase advertises their ZDZ 40RE at $475.00, still a good deal since I could save that $75.00 in Powermaster 20/20 in about 8 visits to the field.
This sounds like an interesting bird. Ken |
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
That is nice little prop chart-
when I built the the models with the ZDZ40's ("pizza boy's and mine) The object was to simply prove out the first phase of doing a "pattern legal gasser." In that none of the other small gassers of the time seemed well suited-we use the ZDZ40- rear intake -rear exhaust - very compact. The power available was already a known - so we simply designed structure that would match the reqd 5 KG all up weight. The resultant models worked very well - tho some thought they were grossly overpowered (like being too rich- easy to fix) No attempt was made at making a copy of the copies of copies of models already available for pattern. The large displacement gasoline engine (if it is all done right) is perfect for this event. The engines will run well and produce plenty of power- at reduced power settings This reduces wear n tear and offers a power RESERVE which - on many occasions , really maintains a constant speed and smoothness of flight. If you fly WOT all the time - this ain't for you. Also, the power impulses of a two stroke are double those of the four stroke - so less "BANG" on each power pulse. Been there -- probably had over 30-40 competition four strokers - they do work but you can't fool mother nature. The props DO slow down between each and every power stroke . best setup in an IC engine (single cyl) is a BIG displacement - fairly low compression two stroke ---with a electronically timed spark set to as retarded as possible for all but full power applications. This reduces that "bump" common to all of the glow engines which fire on compression. Using gasoline allows the use of lower compression - SO---------- Power which can be produced will never equal a same size setup on alky and nitro - That is a given. But the total compromise of the bigger slower turning gasser -- with properly timed firing - is very good. |
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
I think I just weed my pants ... this is IT the answer the panacea to pattern!!!:D:D:D
Is this panacea of pattern flying models going to be available in europe?? If it's made in Czek who is the euro contact! |
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
Hi 3dukidding, the owner/producer of the abbra is Mr. Jaroslav Mach. The name of his company is Mach Composites. I understand he has a dealer in Germany, there may also be a dealer in England. You can em him at [[email protected]] he has a hard time with english and usually has his daughter translate for him - sometime she is off to college and is not available right away. be patient - or ed at www.escomposites.com is a good translator since he is from czek and is best friends with Jaroslav. dry yourself off and dont worry, there will be plenty to go around - order time should be 6 weeks or less. also I was mistaken about designing your own paint scheme. there are 2 or 3 designs available now - you can choose 3 color combos plus white but not change the overall pattern.

RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
I think I will get one. does it come with any hardware, if not, what are you using for control horns, etc? Is it a single elevator servo with a bellcrank, or 2 mini servos in the stabs?
|
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
Control horns are included, a light weight alum plate is pre installed for tailwheel, plastic bolts for belly pan are included, you also get a very nice painted matching glass spinner w. alum back place - very light. you can specify which servos you want to use or it comes standard for jr mini's in stab (trays are installed just screw servos in) and standard jr's for wings and rudder - just drop them in. you will need a very long screwdriver to attatch aileron servos in wings to reach the mounting plate. you will be happy like a kid when your kit arrives and notice how clean/precise and ready to go these kits really are. Jaroslav is a hair splitter, he takes great pride in his workmanship, nothing is left to chance - these planes are proven to be straight, light and strong - just what the dr. ordered. enjoy your purchase!

RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
Pizza,
Do you run the ZDZ40 in this model due to the altitude you fly at? Would you consider 40cc too much at sea level? Mark |
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
For you European flyers. Check with Lorenz in Germany at http://www.f3alorenz.de. He has/had(?) the RHAPSODY so he should be able to get the ABBRA.

RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
For pattern I want a gas engine that is powerful enough for fai, light enough to make weight in a full composite arf pattern ship, user friendly, "EXTREAMLY RELIABLE" and priced right. The zdz40re is the first gas engine that fits this bill to be "AVAILABLE" in our market. yes it has explosive power at 4200 feet and 100 degrees. no longer can you push throttle stick forward and leave it. You will have to focus on throttle management untill you master it. Eventually you will be flying slower giving more time to think and react. Rather than sligshot you will power through the upline stuff and use that power to keep out of trouble when necessary. Once you get use to it there is no going back. There are some new interesting 30-35cc gas engines that should be tested. Running 30% nitro and pushing my ys140L over the edge probably contributed to its below average reliability. My zdz40 runs cool - never gets anywhere near its limit. For me biger displacement and throttle management is the way to go.
|
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
Pizza,
I agree with that philosophy! I take it your throttle managment is actually tx stick based and not limiting servo travel to , say, 75% throttle?? Rgds, Mark |
RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
3d flying mainly hovering is great practice for throttle mastery. you might want to try a throttle limit assigned to a switch. Also these engines make lots of power in the first 1/3 stick - I use a throttle curve to flatten out this area to keep a linear predictable feel. bottom line is that now throttle is important - you cannot simply hook on a wire and go.

RE: Abbra 2m pattern arf
Hi All,
Does the Abbra manufacture have a US importer or website with purchase information? Thanks, Jim W. |
