The solution to the hinge gap, at least an easy solution, is dont use the supplied hinges ! Use the cyano type, especially the ones coming from Island Hobbies. (about a month).

Horn plate for aileron.

I will use MK Horns, and see no alternative to either
1) Move the servo about 10mm inboard or
2) cut the film, attach a wider horn plate to the aileron and re film.

The MK Rudder horns DO fit on the aileron, but the geometry is still wrong.

I will do one of these above two I imagine whichever works easiest. I know its a faff but one a model of this calibre *and cost( its not worth cutting corners in my opinion.)

U/c reinforce? My thoughts;
1) Get a carbon or GRP one to replace the rather thin alu one.
2) Carbon toes in the fuz
3) Ditch the spats and put big soft wheels on it.!! (tee hee)
4) Do greasers every time you land (tee hee again !)

Do the trailing edge of the wing and ailerons match up when you use CA hinges?
I am gonna see what I can do with the atandard setup first before I go hacking up the model. I do have smaller horns that might do the job, but I don't know whether I'd be able to tap into that HUGE throw with them.

hi guys
here a shot off my set up,i used zn 25mm jobs with pete tindal carbon rod set,there is a slight offset which i used the ball link connectors on ailerons,seems to work ok,lots off movement and no binding.

Did you use CA hinges too surrey3styla?
I suppose that the trailing edge doesn't match up for the ailerons and wings? Is it very noticable?
Do you get the full throw with that setup by the way?

yeah the trailing edges do match up , even with the supplied hinges you still have to push them home,i did use ca hinges though,the movement is great though i did have to use the ball links on aileron end.

Hi guys.
Du you think Multiplex Royal Mc/v2 for elev and aileron, and Power Mc/v2 on the rudder would be too weak on the Syn90? I have a coulple laying around to no use..

Royal pulls 78oz on 5 cells, and power pulls 135oz.

Ahh h Robert I see what yo mean about the aileron lining up. I dont know the answer but Mike seems to have covered it.

Mikes pic of the aileron brilliantly shows the geo problem, and no offence Mike but a ball link on the horn is not good practice in my opinion. That said, chance of twist on those horns is probably much reduced - they are alu arent they or gfn? and they look like pukka ball links too.

This is an interesting point. Mark doesn’t mention anything about this or anybody who had the first batch of kits. I wonder if this is something to do with this batch of aeroplanes we have. Looking at the photos he posted, looks like he is using the MK Rudder horns or something very similar.

Hmmm... For us, we were just in a hurry to get it flying, and we didn't notice the stuff mentioned here! Just put in the servos, hinge it, setup the engine, and fly! If it was for F3A, perhaps we would have taken a little longer, and more time to setup it precisely, but we felt that the orginal package was good enough! It certainly is for a good time!

We did replace the horns, and use simple ball-links for the ends though. Saving all the $$$ for F3A....

I used ZN horns
 

I had no problem with the geometry using the ZN horns and MK BB adjusters. They were close to the edge of the horn plate, but there was plenty of meat around the screws and there is no problem.

I have not hooked up any ailerons on this second batch. I leave that to the customer unless they specify the ZN horns; I will not use the stock horns on ailerons. I will take a look and see what happens. The ZN horns are left and right offset and that will make a difference. I'll take some close-ups.

I use either the original pinned hinges or a wider pinned hinge that we buy in bulk packs. I cut a small relief in the control surface for the pin and slide the ailerons home gap free resulting in a good TE alignment.

What did you use for the rudder horn? Looks like only the supplied horn will work given that it will need to clear the elevator. A problem with 3D movements. The horn seems a little soft.

Hi Kris,
I used the stock horns on all of the rudders I finished. They work great and give all of the throw needed with stock servo arms. After the first one I did, I placed little 1mm ply triangles under the horns to spread out the footprint, but there has been no problems on the first one without the little triangle feet.

iused for rudder the zn 25mm ones which to me seemed alot stronger at the time,but the supplied ones are ok,good movement though but they are up high on rudder same place where the standard ones are.archie,the rods are carbon centre with aluminium ends,good quality ball links,after fitting them there was no binding and loads off movement so i left them as they are,do you think the ball links are under to much stress?

not suggesting they are under too much stress, just concern over the force against the horn, which can induce twist forces which can cause flexing of some horns, and side ways pressure n the screw fixing.

I think this is less of a problem if you are using non adjustable horns and non plastic ones.

Dave Boy. No problem, I've finished your Kabriolin wings as well.

A question to all the Synergy fliers....has anyone added supports or flying wires to the tailplane? Those elevators are huge and its built pretty light.

With servo specs such as that you will have no problems with control authority as long as the strength is not at the expense of reasonable speed.
