RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Nice job Kelly! That is the lightest Brio I have ever seen. You may find that Cg a little tail heavy.

Thank you Anthony,
The final weight ready to fly is 10 pounds 1.4 oz. less fuel ready to fly! The biggest weight gain was the pipe coupling. I had forgotten to order a coupling and the only thing I could find locally was some Aerotrend "Cream Of The Crop" tuned pipe coupler. That stuff is heavy! a 2" peice is 2.0 oz. 7/8" I.D. and 1/4" wall thickness. I also added some foam to the canopy to prevent it from crushing when I picked it up. All I need to do is a little radio setup and a little engine breakin and I am ready to maiden it! |
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Again, nice work. See if you can get a light weight piece of flexible tubing over the end of that pipe. A little extension will go a long way in keeping the airplane clean and goo (oil, dirt, etc) out of your pipe tunnel. The Aeroslave pipe has a very awkward end but there is a lot of material there so don't be afraid to grind it down a little.
Do you have an external swith/charge jack? I know I am too lazy to take the canopy off for every flight. |
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
I was out at the field a few hours ago during lunch and Kelly's Brio made it's maiden flight. The plane flew great. The 140 is more than enough power for this plane at that weight. Looks better in person as it does in pictures. Plane flew like it is on rails, locks in and stays there.
Congratulations on a uneventful maiden. DD |

All I can say is WOW !!!
The first flight was pretty much uneventful as DD said. A couple clicks here and there and the plane flew great! Besides surface control trim nothing else was adjust in the first 3 shake down flights. The OS 140 has PLENTY of power and started right up! The second flight after about 8 minutes the pipe slipped out of the coupler and I had to land. A little rough, with a bounce but no damage. The rudder is so sensitive that I over corrected a bit and the nose dropped down suddenly and I touched down a little harder then I would like. :) The third flight was all joy! I fixed my pipe problem and I could not believe how nice and smooth this plane made me look! Dave had his nice camera with him and got some good shots of the plane. Dave, feel free to upload some here when you have time. The canopy is still in white primer, I promise I will finish painting that soon! A few things that jumped out that need trimming... The balance seems fine at 8!QUOT! from the leading edge at the root. It seems to have a bit to much right thrust with the 16.5 x 12 2 blade prop but I think that can be mixed out for now until I see how it acts with other props. In knife edge going right with the canopy facing me it pushes a bit to the wheels. In knife edge going left with the canopy facing me it pulls just a little to the canopy. I will start working my way through the trimming guide next time out. When I got home after dinner I added the black stripes to the underside of the main wings. Thanks again for everyones help! |

Kelly, looking at the forcast. Saturday looks like a good one. Shall we make it a practice day- Can compare notes... Am up for it at Freestate.
Later, Don |

Got a few minutes on the sticks of this plane. Wow is right. Really nice- just a joy to fly. Knife edge and rolling manuevers are so easy it's like cheating. Here's a few pictures from this afternoon.

Congratulations! Many Happy Landings. I like the canopy the way it is.

RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Leave the canopy white :D, it makes a good reference point in the air.

RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Kelly,
Looks like you used the CHP control horns on your wings. What did you do for hard points for mounting them. |

Don,
My wife set up a baby sitter for Saturday so I can fly from around 11:00 to 3:30 or so! I will see you at the feild. ORIGINAL: Don Szczur Kelly, looking at the forcast. Saturday looks like a good one. Shall we make it a practice day- Can compare notes... Am up for it at Freestate. Later, Don |
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
I am just not sure what I will do with the canopy.
It looks OK white, but I think it could look a lot nicer, I just need to play around with it once the weather turns bad. Right now I am having to much fun flying it! :D I was able to get 4 more flights today. I am having to much fun to settle down and trim it! I am sure Don can help out with that once he flies it. |

I like a smaller canopy/cockpit area like this, more jet like.

RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
What a great day!
I feel very fortunate to have Don Szczur come out to the flying field and put my Brio through its trim flights. It is really refreshing to see some with that much talent spend his flying time helping someone else. I have seen Don do this on several occasions with student pilots on training night even when he was trying to prepare for the a big contest. Today I just happen to be the lucky recipient. Thank you again Don! The plane flies even better now and I have no excuse now if I mess up! ;) |
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
On the elevators I drilled 2 new mounting holes in the CHP horns.
Post #45 of this thread, second picture.... You can see I drilled new mounting holes, one on each side. The 2 screws hit the existing hard point perfectly. The way I see it if I rip those 2 screws out of hardwood then something is wrong! ;) For the ailerons 2 of the 3 screws would hit the existing hard point and I simply added a 1/4" dia. hard point for the 3rd screw. RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Don's Comments:
My favorite "it flies like a Brio" ! My second favorite "that's a Kevlar brio" ! Sorry guys, I thought is was fiberglass the whole time. I told you I was a newbie! Don's Recommendations: Balance: No change. Incidence: No change. 1/4 neg on stabs and 1/4 pos on the main wings. Down thrust: Thought it could use just a hair of down, but not to worry about it now. I actually added a very small amount of up during the build. I glued 1/16 inch ply to the back of the hyde mount and sanded it down from zero to 1/16 inch. Some day when I remove the engine I will sand it off. Ailerons: Larger/longer servo arm on the ailerons and reduce the ATV to 100 for faster surface travel. I used a JR servo wheel and ATV of 130 (futaba 9C) for the ailerons (all surfaces actually). Even though it had 9411SA it looked slow to him. Radio Mixing: Rudder to elevator, rudder to aileron, throttle to rudder, and throttle to elevator. Don was able to knock this out in 3 flights, I would have been playing with it (and wondering if it was right) for a month. He also drew out the pattern box on our field, boy that is small! I need to fly way closer and SLOW DOWN ! That 16.5 x 12 prop is to fast for me! I just might have to go ahead and get the 3 blade DL re-pitched prop! RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
hi !
i don't know the Brio but i have a Znline Twister (one piece wing( thinner than the 2 piece)) with an 140 rx and have with big success used the APC 18x10 sport you should try this one ..its a bit heavier but it slows down the plane nicely and gives you a good vertical thrust. i know its looks odd but it works! |
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Kelly, try either the 18.1x10 or 18.x10W.
I have the 18.1x10 and it's a DREAM! It will be a HUGE improvement over the 16.5 x 12. I don't have the (W) wide version, but it's supposed to be even better. Keith |
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Just started running the 18.1X10W on my 1.60 OS and LOVE IT.. awesome braking and uplines are steady, constant speed and go for a very ver very ridiculousy long time.
Enjoy |
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Thank's guys...
Just starting to get over a nasty stomach virus.... YUK!!! I need to make an order from Central (I need 2 tetra fittings) and I did not see a 18.1 x 10 listed, only a 18x10 sport. Is the 18x10 Sport the wide? Where are you ordering the 18.1x 10 from? |
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
What is he doing with the throttle to rudder mix ?
kirk |
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Kelly, the prop isn't on Central's site or probably even on APC's site. Just call Central and ask for the 18.1x10 and 18.1x10W. I'd get one of each so you can try them both. They'll know what your talking about.

RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
i use the 18x10 sport looks as i said odd but its great its not wide. 18,1x10 i havnt tried.
APC's number LP 18010 |
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Rune,
The 18.1x10 /10W were designed specifically for pattern by FAI pilot Mike Harrison and APC. The 18x10 doesn't provide the breaking and linear speed control provided by the newer 18.1 props. BTW, the 18.1 is actually 18" but they're using the .1 notation to to delineate between the standard 18" prop. The difference is in the size and shape of the blades. Keith |
