Kelly's Brio build and pictures

I thought it would be best if I didn't clog up Don's "Brio by the numbers"
thread with my first time pattern build so I am starting this thread. I decided to use a OS 140rx in my brio and today I worked on the motor mount and nose ring. I purchased a Hyde A style motor mount. This mount does not require a nose ring but I decided to add one in case I use a AR type mount. I made the nose ring out of aluminum with fuel tubing installed around the ring. I made the nose ring support out of 1/8" aircraft ply. Here are a few pictures. |

After reading about heavy rudders and cracking hinge material
I decided to built the new one. I went with a built up rudder instead of a foam core (it was just easier for me). I had purchased CHP control horns and ended up having to angle them in a little to make the pivot over the hing line. Once everything is covered I think it will look nice. The rudder came out at 1.7 oz. |

Here are a few pictures of the landing gear supports I
added. I made templates from cardboard and transferred that to 1/8" aircraft ply. In the pictures they are just tack glued in place. I will add epoxy with milled fiberglass (thank's for the tip Dave) later. |

Chin cowel.
I decided to use small 2/56" bolts to hold on the chin cowel. I added some light ply pieces to prevent the fuse side from crushing when the bolts are tightened. |

Canopy.
For some reason the dowels that hold one side of the canopy in place had been cut off flush. I decided to install new dowels facing forward instead of the back. This way if the screw comes out the canopy will just fly off without possibly popping up, catching a bunch of air and doing more damage. I used small fiberglass dowels instead of wood and reinforced the dowel pin holes with 2 layers of ply. I also added a couple of ply disks at the mid point of the canopy to help with the alignment. At the back I used a single 4/40" socket cap screw that is recessed into the canopy to hold it down. A steel washer is built into the recessed hole. |

Keep it coming Kelly.

Thanks for all the very good pics. You show how a construction manual should be illustrated and most often is not.

Thanks guys!
I worked on the throttle servo the other night. Nothing special I mounted the servo to the side of the Hyde mount as I had seen done several times. One small change.... I threaded the aluminum angle and captured 4 2/56" socket caps screws in place with 2/56" nut under the servo. This will allow me to use nylon locking nuts on the 2/56" studs and I will be able to remove the servo for service at the flying field without having to have access to the heads of the 4 socket cap screws. |

Enigine is now mounted and the cooling inlets are cut out.
I also mounted the wheel pants and wheels. I mounted the engine a little sideways so the header pipe would be closer to the pipe tunnel center line. As it turns out I can reach through the front of the plane and get to all 4 of the engine mount screws and remove the engine, mount, and throttle servo as one complete unit. Next I will mount the pipe once it arrives. |

After a lot of hair pulling I decided to go ahead with the DEPS
for the elevator. Once I decided on a location for the servo rails I built a servo mount out of aircraft ply and balsa. Then spent a lot of time working out the pushrod exit locations and building the ladder. This was my first DEPS and it does take some time to do, but the next time it will be a lot faster. Next up is the pull pull rudder. |

I finished the DEPS and completed the pull pull cable exits
at the same time. Once the tubes had been located I tack glued them in place with thick CA. I then made 2 light ply and balsa fillers to fill in the tail servo holes and glued them in place with epoxy from the inside. I used epoxy mixed with milled fiberglass to coat the inside of the tube exits. I gained access through the rudder post I had removed earlier in the build. Once everything was dry I sanded down the tube exits flush with the fuse sides. |

Pipe mount in the tunnel.
I had never done a pipe mount inside a tunnel so I had to think about it a while. After a few quick drawings I cam up with a mount that is light weight and easy to install. It will sandwich the nomex floor of the Brio pipe tunnel and can be bolted in place without having to go inside the canopy. The pictures can explain it better then words.... That white plastic peice is just a spacer for testing and has nothing to do with the mount |

This is my first composite airframe and paint job. I have painted
cowels and wheel pants and the underside of my Mustang. Honestly when it comes to paint I have more spray equiptment then talent! I used a Basecoat/Clearcoat The lines are straight but the camera makes them look jagged. |
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
NICE!

RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Ditto....nice work. I don't see any lack of talent in those pics?
|
RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Thank's guys,
I wasn't fishing for compliments I promise! ;) I should replace "talent" with "experience" I have a hard time getting the paint to lay down smooth without orange peel. I think proper spray gun setup comes with years of painting and experimenting with setups. ORIGINAL: flyintexan Ditto....nice work. I don't see any lack of talent in those pics? |

Started work on the wing covering. I will be using Ultracote in
white, orange and black. The white and orange are a little translucent and one of the main wings had dark spots on the balsa sheeting. I decided to give the top side of the wings a couple of light coats of white primer even though it would add a little weight. I added filler and sanded with 220, primed, sanded again and then sanded with 320 grit. |

LOOKS AWESOME Kelly. Watch out though when DD gets the sticks - He'll want you to build him one!

RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Wow Kelly. You do some really great work!!!! That's a beautiful finish so far!

Thanks Guys,
DD you might as well sell that P47 and step all the way into the dark side! ;) Mike Hester has a sweet plane to replace it. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3640864/tm.htm |

RE: Kelly's Brio build and pictures
Looking good. I am still stuck at work. I plan on putting the P-47 away for a while and work on the extra. I may have to get rid of that thing as it has put a few gray hairs on my chin.
