Composite-ARF Integral, turned out to be a very helpful build thread...

I had the unique opportunity to celebrate with the 2007 USA F3A Team and their families after the Finals, for dinner. I sat next to Jason (Shulman for our newest members) and discussed the previous weeks activities. Of particular interest, was more specific feedback on his impression of my (actually Bill Cunningham's loaned model) Oxai-Zeque and the ZN/Comp-ARF Integral...

Background: The Oxai-Zeque debuted in the USA in February 2007 in Phoenix with a hand full of top pilots including Troy Newman, Mark Leseberg, Brett Wickizer and Arch Stafford having at least one provebial "Flight". Few pilots have actually "flown" the remarkable model, not that has prevented comparisons...

I test flew my Zeque #2 due to the mid-air Zeque #1 sustainded in June, Saturday morning before the NATS. Troy and I flew it 4 times and were pleased with the models set-up and trim. Sunday, Jason came by with his "Entourage" to see what we were up to...

I said..."Jason, have you ever flown a Zeque?" He said "No, does that mean that I am going to?" I said "Yes and you are welcome to fiddle with trim as required." He has a most interesting trimming process that I will save for another post, needless to say, UNIQUE!

And my point...back to dinner...So, I asked Jason, which model he prefered, the Zeque or the Integral? He looked at me (with out the little hangy chin thing) and said, the Integral is MUCH easier to fly. I said, REALLY? He said MUCH easier. Okay, so I ordered one on the spot, which will be Hacker C50 13XL powered and have subsequently ordered another which will be YS DZ 170 powered. Andrew (Jesky, for our newest members) and Jason have each promised to send me pictures of their "ducting". HINT GUYS...SEND PHOTOS!

Purpose of this post...DUCTING...our friends at BVM Jets have been busy developing a new E-powered jet and I have ordered a few pairs of their most interesting NACA inlet kits. They are $18.95 per pair and are said to reduce motor and battery temperatures 10 - 15 degrees and can be added to a finished model.

If it does not work...it will look very cool!

Missed your chance there, Rusty. Should have said . . "give me a fly of yours, then I'll order a couple!" :D

I look forward to your report on the Integral, as the info in your Zeque thread was great.

Cheers, Jeff

bla bla,
Obviously the airplane is a good one as it took 1st and 2nd place at the
AMA nationals.
You probably wouldn't like it because CPLR didn't design it !

Hello, I'm not knocking the airplane.
It's a fine European design and it's inspiring (or shocking ((or depressing)) to see the best the US has relying on such!
It's the way it's being plugged that makes me laugh.
Surely you wheren't under the impression it was home grown Tommy?
You've gotta laugh.

Seems to me that if Jason wanted to fly the Zeque he could probably get his hands on a couple!

From a friend's experience of most of a season's take-offs/landings on our grass strip---the carbon cloth finishes a bit too close to the back of the U/C mount, and is an abrupt line at 90 degrees to the long axis of the fus.
This resulted in multiple small stress cracks in the glass/balsa laminate just aft of the carbon cloth.
Extending the carbon cloth to the line drawn on the photo worked nicely--no further damage.

RE: Composite-ARF Integral, kinda build thread

Was that an electric version you got cracks with?

Once the pipe tunnel is installed it removes and transfers quite a bit of stress from that area. Also the part of the fuse that tapers back from the landing gear reinforcement is removed when using a 2 cycle pipe, so, additional carbon fiber in that area would be useless because it would be removed anyway.

If an electric system is installed then the carbon fiber extended to that point or further would be useful.

Yes---haven't seen a long 2-stroke installation,so can't comment fairly on that----but would guess that the same might possibly apply to a 160/170 DZ, with the current short muffler.

Andrew,

Thank you! Can you post a photo of the chin cowl and tells us about the engine mount (front) you are using?

Sorry, yesterday turned into a long busy day. Here's some more of Andrew's and some of mine. I suggest an opening in the front chin like Andrew's as his seems to run cooler than mine, and that's the only difference. Andrew is running the stock mounts that are included with the kit. I am running the Hyde mount up front and the stock rear mount included in the kit.

Hi,

... here`s my firewall and nose ring installation for my YS 160 ...
The firewall has been lightened as you can see , then covered with 1.5 mm balsa. The mount is Hyde YS 140 ARA .

The nose ring is the stock one with splitted fuel-hose fastend with silicon. The ring itself is fastened from outside for easy replacement of the hose.

Hi Kjell,

Just wondering how much weight you saved by lightening the firewall and backing it up with 1.5mm balsa? Is the weight savings worth the loss in strength and rigidity? Do you actually need the weight savings on this airframe? Just curious. Thanks. By the way, the lightened firewall does look very cool.

Hi

Does anyone have the Windows "fonts" of the "Integral" letters, to be printed on graphics plotter?
My kit didn't come with the "Integral" letters stickers.
