Hey I know a lot of you guys have been doing this sport for a longtime. My friend Doc thought it would be cool to post an old pic next to a new one for fun.
I'll start it with a 1973 pic of me with my Dad's Mach 1 and today with my Integral. Mike Mueller |

I think this is a great thread...
This is my solo picture in 1975, I was 14..... My mom had to drive me to the field. This was also the first RC plane that I built, don't remember the name of the kit but it had a K&B 40 and I flew it with a Expert 5 channel. it took me two years to save my paper route money... The motor was around 50 bucks and the radio cost me 200.... enjoy :) |

It pays to be old. The first one is a control line Barnstormer ca. 1952. Then a single channel Live Wire Champ around 1960. Notice the Citizen-ship transmitter on the ground. Finally, today! Dan.

Mike, if old is what you want, check this one out. Those are solid pine models made by Strombecker. I got into powered flight around 1947 or a little bit later when glow pug engines first came out. I was always building something except for three periods in my life. I discovered what girls were really for in high school. I had no time in college and I lived outside the country for a couple of years. Other than that, it's been build, build, build. I wish I had more pictures. Dan.

RE: Then and now side by side pics
Thanks handglider, I drew the plans up myself from a set of Paul Matt three views. I too was inspired by "The Aviator" especially since I retired from Hughes Aircraft. Dan.

Okay this is getting weird, did some of you purposely pose in the same manner or have your poses not changed in so many years? I wish I had kept some old pics.
|
RE: Then and now side by side pics
You have good point Tianci. man is that odd hoe evryone seemingly strikes the same pose.
Hey post your pics. They don't have to span 30 years they could be anything. This is pretty funny stuff. Thanks all, Mike |

Wow! This is cool! First picture was taken in 1965. The model was a "sort-of-a-Orion" with an ST G20/46 and a home made 6ch. reed. Second picture was taken in 2005. The model IS the Orion, with an ST 51 and a Controlaire Reed 10ch. radio. Ciao Beppe |

What a cool thread Mike!
Whoa Dean, I don't know who looks geekier, you with the Buddy Hollies or me with the Izod....LOL Anyway, this first pic is me circa late 70s/early 80s with my first pattern plane, a Fliteglass Pagan. I was about 13 in that pic. Yeah it's ugly(the plane but ok, me too!) ...I was a broke dog and all I had was metallic green monokote left over from my father's build and some gold spray paint. The plane flew awesome though! Always wanted to compete in pattern back then, but I was too darned broke. Second one is me and a few planes at St Clairesville a couple years ago. (and little Mikey). I just realized that I just don't have or keep pics of myself much. -Mike |
RE: Then and now side by side pics
Hey Mike, sure looks like a tie on the geek factor. I always wore those old school aviator style frames back then.
Hey Dan, You have a story that we all need / love to hear. That is amazing you worked for hughes aircraft. The racer is a plane that I always wanted to model. It would be an honor to build one from your plans. Okay guys once we get more victims / posters we need to do a poll on who has the 70's geek factor going. oh, and I know old Pete has us beat of geek factor, that kid went straight to the university of pitsburgh from the 8th grade. yea pete let's see you inner geek !!!!!! Dean |
RE: Then and now side by side pics
Sorry man....no pics other than my drivers lic picture. I was and always have been an inner geek, any pictures from that time from would have been a picture of a "head" smoking a cigarette.
I'll just watch this thread from the sidelines since I have no pics to contribute. |

Beppe,
Here's me and my Orion around 1962. It was on reeds. I never flew it because of college commitments. I understand they were great fliers. The image of me with the Curtis A12 was taken a few years ago. Dan. handglider, I wish I could help you. I would love to see a squadron of these flying around since mine looks so great up in the air. Unfortunately the plans I draw up are really crude and just enough to get me going. They are also drawn in AUTOcad. A software that is expensive and generally not used by us hobbiests. Dan. |

Lost the image of the Orion. Dan.

RE: Then and now side by side pics
Hey Dan,
I work in CAD and can work with those drawings. I could also work on fine tuning the CAD drawings and getting laser parts designed. I would love to work together with you on the project. Sounds like a great winter project. We could have a squadron of hughes racers, I'll pm you with my contact info.... |
RE: Then and now side by side pics
Great! Send me your Email address and I'll send them to you. Dan.
|
RE: Then and now side by side pics
I dunno. Mike's 70s pants are gonna be hard to beat!!! And that hair....dude....LOL
Ok this is definitely potentially the most comical thread ever on RCU. Dan? You'd be suprised how many of us have Autocad :D I'd love to hear some stories about Hughes as well. -M |
