Does anyone know where a guy could find (on the web) designs that show formers and stations for a competition racing sloop. I have a northwind 36 and want to make my own hull. I do a fair amount of aircraft related composite work and want to put together a scratch built one off. Scale is not an issue as I'll scale up or down as needed.
I have found some designs already but they are for cruiser type sloops rather than "Americas Cup" types that I'm looking for. I've also tossed around the idea of making a one man racing sloop with ballast keel to show off to my friends with lasers.
Any hints?
Lee

http://www.amya.org. Go to the "Yacht Classes" page and look for the US One Meter Class. It's not much larger than your 36 and has similar sail area (600 sq. in.). There are several downloadable designs there to build.

No problem, the other plans are great too.
I wonder if anyone has any opinions on the AMYA plans. What would be your recommendation. I like the Advance designs.
Jan, I'm really liking the Loona Rossa and Il moro. Have you built either of them?
I race full scale Fireballs, lasers and flying Dutchman but do not have any plans to race the models except for fun in a non sanctioned way therefore I want to scale up to 2m or so for RC and as I said perhaps a 5-6m scale to carry one person.

I stumbled across this thread and I too would like to build a RC sailboat and looked the above listed plans. The Vanquish or the Advance look the best to my eye. Are there any recommendations between these two?
I read some of the construction articles and I do not want to make my own lead keel. Would there be any commercially available keels to fit one of these?
How would these sized boats handle a speed boats wake? I intend to sail this on a lake with the occasional boat passing by.
Thanks, Mitch

a IOM can handle some chop without any problem.
Check the 2005 Wolrd champ. IOM page
http://rcyachts.net/iomworlds/index.htm
They were sailing the first day in some heavy wind and chop.
If you go for the Vanquich, contact Dan Sherman, he will give you more information about his design and results.

for a bulb, check www.gbmy.com

Mitch,
I would do my best to stay out of the wakes. Refer to the AMYA website for a list of suppliers. There are a number of vendors who cater to the vrious classes and can supply keels.

I sail my Voyager (1M) in lakes with 1:1 boats, when I have boatspeed (=wind) I take the steep waves broadside, the boats gets lifted up and down, instead of getting burried beyond the mast, when I take the waves head on.

No, not yet, but I'm preparing to make a hull from the Luna Rossa plans, using the German rubber method.
Lately I haven't had much time to build anything, so I haven't even started cutting out formers...
I'm playing with the idea of widening the hull slightly (barely noticable) in order to make it less of a light weather boat.
Light winds are not very common overhere.

Jan, since you are contemplating a hull design change, I'm wondering if it would be both easier and possibly more effective if instead you extended/modified the keel for a bit more depth? And possibly even make a slightly heavier keel bulb. In many parts of the US we have to be careful about keel depth due to our weed problems and shallow lakes. However, I have it in my head that you really do not much suffer from either condition.
Just a suggestion.

I'm leaning towards the Il Moro for its wider beam. I also like the transom of the modified (later) version. Scaled up 25% from the 1/20 scale will be my winter build. @60" LOA and 100" HOA.

Wow, 60" LAO!
You have a bigger shed than me...
And a better back.
Keep us posted when you start the build!
What's it going to be, wood over frames or an epoxy hull?
Regards, Jan.

Well I have a few full size boats and a boathouse so storage isn't a problem.
If the model works out well I'll be building a 1/5 or 1/6 scale for single or double crew full size sailing.
Plug will be balsa over formers in a traditional manner, molds made and then finally likely epoxyglass. I don't see a reason to go carbon fiber unless the hull is to be left unpainted to show the CF. I'll be using formers within the epoxyglass hull to support the deck, mast etc so CF painted just doesn't make sense....especially because I won't be racing a fair race against any other models anyway.
.
The sail materials that the builder of the Luna Rossa used will probably be more suitable for models larger such as the one I'll build. Seemed a little(lot) heavy for the 1/20 scale class.
I'll keep you posted.

I did the Luna Rossa from velarc. I bought the rigging from GBMY. It is fast in the light air and handles slightly less wind that my CR914. I built keel out of plywood, 4 layers sanded down and faired. Balast Bulb bought from GBMY (IOM ballast). rudder was balsa. Balsa planked and epoxyoed with 4 coats faired after each. Took a while to build but was my first scratch boat and no issues. I'll take pics and post ASAP. Still havenlt finished detils on paint job, but hull is painted and clear coated.

hi i built the luna early this year i changed the design a bit and lengthened the keel fin to help her in higher winds.i also built mine smaller than nthe plans at 34" long.she does sail beutifully i made the sails myself they are just flat but i intend to do some panneled ones soon.ive had her out in really bad weather too with no blow overs so lengthening the keel fin helped i guess.hers a pic shes balsa planked with 120 g cloth and polyester resin.i put a rubbing rail round the hull creating a lip to sit the deck into the deck is screwed on and sealed using polycarbonate sealer(clear) worked great and i can get it all off if i need to.hers a pic or two.[img][/img]

Wismerhell,
I dont have a program that reads .dxf files (AutoCad etc.) and would very much like to have the plans for the Vanquish. Any chance of me sending you a self addressed envelope for a copy?
Thanks
David
