I think the question was about filling the weave , lacquer versus dope. Actually "one" of the best ways to fill weave is by putting talcum powder in dope and brush it on, dry, then sand and do it again until the weave is filled. Be carful not to sand through the mat. Then some high build primer to polish it off, that too is sanded and now you are ready to paint. There is another way where you thin down Dap light weight spackle and put it on with a credit type card, sand and prime the same as above. This is not something you usually do over open frame work.

I was actually asking about substituting the lacquer instead of dope because the availability of dope in my neck of the woods is not very good. In fact it is down right poor. It would have to be ordered + shipping. Lacquer is readily available at the local big box store. Automotive urethane paint on top for color and fuel proofing. The two products are siblings so my thoughts are "why not"?
