New WW1 project for the dawn patrols: It's a Spad XIII at 1/3 scale. I really liked my 1/4 scale BUSA one and have been dreaming about doing one at 1/3 scale for several years. I know Dave Johnson has some plans for one but I couldn't get ahold of them so I decided to do it my usual way, which is, print out the 5-views at the appropriate size and build right on top of them, figuring out a lot of the construction as I go along. Formers were drawn by hand on tracing paper, taking measurements off the top and side views. The wing rib profile was taken from the free online Profili program. That's how I did the Hannover and Gotha.
So far, the fuselage is pretty much done, the lower wings are done, and I'm in the process of covering the tail surfaces. Power is going to be a G-62.

Jim,
Very nice looking Spad. The 1/3 Spad is going to be my next project, Ive always wanted one. Having flown the 1/4 scale, i really like how stable it is. Bigger is always better, right. How wide is it inside the cowl for engine room.

Steve,
excellent choice on the Fokker D-VII. Very impressive and true scale finish. The yellow wings with the crosses show up great in the air. You will love it.
I used Lt Thuy design as a starting point on a 1/4 scale, but then added the Irish green nose and white stripe to suit my own tastes.
.
Now that dates for HDP are set, I will try to make with a couple 1/3 planes.
Jim, dang that SPAD is looking good. I especially love the craftsmanship on the pilots head rest.

That's right, more pictures. Actually, Jim, you amaze me. Wish I had 1/2 of your skills. Plus, since flying my smaller Spad, I have become some what of a Spad fan, so I'm watching with much interest. a larger one might be in my future , if I live long enough. Not sure I want to go 1/3, but 1/4 for sure. I've decided to downsize most of my future builds to 1/4, after the 1/3 SE5a, that is. But, depends on how I like the way yours will fly and presents itself.

More construction photos.
The engine box is aircraft ply and the front formers are 1/4" light ply.
The longerons are 1/4 sq. basswood and the stringers are 1/4 x 1/8 basswood. The headrest stringers had to be cut down to 1/8 x 1/8 so they would bend. Planking on the front is 1/8 balsa.

Tail surfaces are basically 1/2" balsa and 3/32" cap strips. Trailing edges of the tail surfaces are 1/8" balsa. The landing gear is made from 3/16" wire and pieces of basswood and aircraft ply sandwiched together.
