It's been over three months since the last post....where does the time go...? The Hanriot is still safely hanging in the garage. I did fly it with a substitute reciever and all went well. The original PCM was sent in to the JR shop and they looked it over and could find nothing wrong. So, when the weather warms a little the PCM will be re-installed and I'll just ingore any glitches.......or maybe a Spektrum DX7 will take the place of the JR. Has anyone tried a Spektrum in a WWI model? All the comments I've seen on the DX7 in sport and aerobatic models have been very positive. Imagine, a WWI model with no worry of interference from those wires vibrating together!! If I get one I'll first try it in my trusty old 3 seabees Thomas-Morse Scout....old Tommy the Scout has been my Springtime warm-up plane for years now, just to get the thumbs working again...

Randy,
I would love to see some in flight pictures also. Make sure you grab your camera on the next outing to the field with the HD1.

Bought a Spektrum DX 7 radio yesterday....I've been putting it off for a month at least. Managed about 7 flawless flights (at least from the radio's point of view!!) today, flying an aerobatic ARF, and I'm as certain as anyone can be in this hobby that the Hanriot HD-1 will get a Spektrum reciever soon....then I can get some inflight photos to post..! I don't know if the airplane responds better, as some people have mentioned, but the peace of mind that comes with being nearly immune to interference sure makes the whole experience better!!

Pictures soon if the weather holds!!

Hi Bob,

Installed the Spektrum AR7000 receiver in the HD-1 today. Might go out Tuesday if the weather is OK....I'm more than a little excited about this technology...WWI biplanes without radio glitches?? A dream come true.....Your Camel will deserve only the best Bob, looks like another masterpiece in the making!

I'm also going to try a 20-6 prop on the OS 160 four stroke. It's the largest prop that OS recommends. Anyone have any experience with this prop/engine combo? I previously used a 18-5 and it had more than enough pull...does anyone make a 19-6??

Randy my buddy has a OS160 twin in his GTM Dr1. I don't think his prop is a 20-6.. in fact I'm pretty sure it's not. That engine has about the same power as an OS 120 surpass. Ive got a 16-8 Graupner on my SE5a with a 120 Surpass.

Randy, I have an older OS 160 on my BUSA Dr.1. I use an 18-8, pulls it around great at half throttle.
I'd say a 20-6 would be just fine.

It's been a very windy Spring here in SW Idaho....I finally managed to get the Hanriot out for a flight today. The Spektrum radio is installed, with the main rx under the pilots seat. The satellite rx with a 12" extension is located about 1/2 way back towards the tail, about where the 5 is on the aircraft side. Tried to be as thorough as possible with the range check, I walked a 30-40 pace radius semi-circle around the model with the engine running and everything was fine. Had a pretty uneventful flight, not a single glitch..the Spektrum worked flawlessly. This rx has about 25 flights on it while in another model, so I was fairly confident that everythnig would work out. This may seem odd but I really miss the little red flag that I had on the end of my 72mhz radio antenna...I guess I looked at it to check the wind more often than I realized!!

I did get a few inflight pictures, but they are not very good...but they are all I have!!

Tell me you don't walk to the air field... It seems very close in to a row of homes, any complaints from the neighbors?

Great looking plane btw.

In that picture you are looking over a low bluff, and the homes are across a golf fairway, a canal and a railroad track. They do look very close, but they are not that close. I think the telephoto lens must make the background look closer. Of course, 15 or 16 years ago when the field first was built, there was nothing but farmland out there.....it's on an old landfill thankfully, or there would be condos there instead of a r/c model flying field!! Our days may be numbered though...

Just another day in the Swiss airforce, circa 1919......with our scale qualifier just two weeks away, you just never know who will show up at the flying field...The Nieuport is a 28 from the Proctor kit, Laser twin but I'm not sure which. Both have Spektrum radios. I managed one good flight but the N-28 had onboard glow problems....

The Nieuport 28 has solved the onboard glow problems, and has had 6 or 8 glitch free flights in the last few days. This airplane is nearly 10 years old and has about 10 total flights, due to massive interference/noise on 72mhz, to the point where the control surfaces would flap wildly even at close range.... Now the Spektrum provides trouble free flights.

I have installed a Spektrum module on my JR transmitter and an AR 9000 in the Hanriot with two remote recievers. One rx is in the fuselage near the 5 in the "653" and the other is behind the pilots headrest in the turtle deck, and of course the main rx under the pilots seat. I have a JR 2700 5-cell nimh battery pack with a Fromeco regulator. Previously the Spektrum would go into fail safe when range checking, at about 30 feet when directly in front of the model and the tx antenna pointed at the nose. This was with the AR7000 and one remote rx. I accepted that and had many trouble free flights with that installation. But now, with the AR9000 and two remote rx's there is no hint of failsafe at 30 feet and even standing behind a pickup truck.....I'm really pleased. If the model was still in the construction phase there would be a Spektrum remote reciever in one or two wingtips...they can be up to 36" from the main rx.

Scale qualifier is this weekend. Wind is forecast to be 15 mph.....should be fun!!

Your models are outstanding in their field.

Seriously, the Hanriot looks just fanstastic -- on the ground and it the air. Good luck in the qualifier.

I'm so envious of your Specktum radio setup. It makes me want to scream that it is unlikely to become legal in Japan for many years (if ever).

It just so happens that it is a great field to be out standing in....

I wish the Nieuport were mine...it belongs to a fellow club member, I was not at all clear on that...

I hope the weather cooperates for the Qualifier....I'll try to get and post some pics...

Randy, I've followed your saga from the beginning, and also enjoyed the dvd from Dick Hansen of the Idaho Qualifier, where you had some nice flights. It's all been an inspiration for my build.
I just finished flying my Yak 9U at the Hemet Scalemasters and am now devoting all my time to finishing up my Hanriot. Would it be possible to correspond directly with you via email? My address is [email protected] Thanks!

I've been resisting for a long time but I have finally learned (sort of) how to post a video.

Here are some video clips from one of the first flights on June 2, 2006....

Has anyone else put any thought into the RCV120-SP for this model? Just a numbers comparison OS FT-160 is 2.0 HP, RCV is 1.8 HP. OS will swing a 20x6 max and the RCV will do a 20x12 max (at half the RPM). Definitely would have to work out how to get the weight as far forward as possible, but it would make putting in a sale radial pretty easy. Found this too http://www.rcvengines.com/gallery/rc...nieuport17.htm The weight is only 2 onces less, but the potential to swing a larger scale size prop would get more weight farther forward. Any thoughts anyone?

Hi Christophe ,

Thank you, and thanks to Messrs Hanriot and DuPont for designing such a delightful airplane!!

I see you are still flying around without your helmet!!
