I going to start working on a 1/5th spit. I'm going to do the clipped wing version and am wondering what to expect handling wise. Will losing that much wing area make a super HUGH differents? It's a Pica kit for what that's worth.

Would expect little difference... The wing loading will be marginally increased, as will the roll rate, but at model scale, power loading is soooo excessive that any adverse effects will be lost...

Completely agree with GeeBeeJim, I had a BT Mk14 with clipped wings, in Belgian colours, liked it on the ground, but once in the air, although it seemed to fly as well as the other full wing BT Spitfires I have had, it just didn't look right. After only a couple of weeks, I gave it tips, new ailerons and the other changes and turned it into this PR19. Back to looking good in the air too. I can confirm though, having flown the same model with and without tips, that there is not much difference, apart from the clipped version rolled quicker, or seemed to.

Idigbo hit it right on the head regarding his description of the flight characteristics of the two wing forms. Supermarine clipped the Spit's wing to enhance low altitude maneuverability and in this they succeeded admirably. But, I have to agree with both Idigbo and GeeBee Jim that the clipped wing is esthectically the lesser of the two shapes. But, hey, that's just me.

Another point, Pica kits tend to be on the heavy side when built. You may need all the wing area you can get. A little swiss cheesing on the non-critical areas can remedy this if you think it is worth the trouble. Paul

Be sure you "cant" the gear forward about and inch or plan on never flying off grass. The Pica will NOT taxi on grass with the gear in the scale location. It will be immediately on it's nose.
