1/2 Scale Fokker D-8

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
That's an interesting question. On a small model, covered with thin ply, I wouldn't expect any problems. In essence the 2.4 Rx in my Albatros CI will be "inside a ply box" (aka "the fuselage"). But on a "semi-full-scale" model like yours, there's a lot more wood. Still, I would imagine that the 2.4 signal can penetrate a few sheets of plywood since 2.4 phones seem to be able to handle whole walls in houses. In the end, the only real answer to your question is TESTING, TESTING, TESTING (to your own satisfaction).
Maybe you could make up a "test box" with a servo that raises a flag or something outside the box and then do a full range check. It's strange to think of a teeny little 2.4 Rx controlling that whole enormous model. Is there such as thing as using two Rx's in a redundant system?

Thanks for the input, I feel better now knowing that you do the same Dave. After all those beautiful models you build fly great! Thanks again, Tom

Today I received my wing mount hardware in the mail from GTM. He had Rodger Freeman make these for me. Odd that such a small piece of thin metal holds the whole wing to the fuse. I will get these bent to shape, then put the fuselage back on the table to fit the struts to the wing. I still need to make my rear struts. And figure out the incidence, fun stuff!
Thanks for taking a peek!

Reading your build with all its great photos is like taking a Master Course in model building! Thanks!

Yes just about 1/16th but a little soft. I'm sure they'll be ok. As long as I don't catch a wing tip for any reason! That is if I'm lucky enough to get her flying some day.

Well I finally cleaned the shop and brought the fuselage back in. As you can see I stripped down the fuselage to work on the wing mounting. I positioned the aircraft across my table so I could lower the wing over it, to be mounted on. This way I can set it up and not have to move it away, just lift it out off the way. I will fill the tops of the struts and put the tubes in the tops so I can bolt them on, that is the metal mounts. Then I will attach them to the spars. The rear struts need to be made also. Glenn's plans show 0 incidence. Any takes

well im a millwright and there hasnt been any work round here for a couple yrs. alcoa and john deere and the general mills etc are all holding onto their wallets.
as far as wife she likes the planes and such and since nothing is coming out of my bank account she dont care lol. I have spent most of last year designing abt 8 or so planes for the UK Dawn Patrol Show team and am finishing up my next to last design for them so I will have some time to build and need the nice payday that will get when their finished.

That's really cool that you can find a way to make a few extra bucks out of the hobby. It seems the only way I do is when there's totally no work and I have to sell the planes I love. As is the 1/2 D-8 That will be going as soon as some one wants it bad enough. In the mean time I will slowly continue to finish it.

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
Yea I just wished I could do more building than drawing. the UKDP wants to have 60 planes in the air in the next couple years and I will be supplying a lot of the plans. As soon as I get caught up they want more but hey its a few extra bucks.
I am finishing a Pflaz DRI for them and peckergnat then have to finish an FE2b then they contacted me week ago and already commissioned me to finish up my Roland series with a Roland DII for them and an AEG Giv bomber which will be little over 20 ft ws at 3rd scale. Plus theres still the Snipe to do and an LVG CVI
So I have another year or so in work just on those then theres 30 ish planes left they still need. as they only trying to allow 1 of every type so ppl dont all build the same thing.

RE: 1/2 Scale Fokker D-8
well in the last year I provided the following. though they fairly detailed and complete they are more prototype plans they are building now then will send me all the info for changes made so I can finalize for market. remembering all their planes have to be 3rd scale so that everythings the same for their shows.
Bristol Fighter
Sopwith Triplane
Roland DVI
Roland CII Walfisch
Pfalz DXII
Pfalz DRI/DVII (should be finished this week)
FE2b (couple weeks after Pfalz)
theres another I am forgetting here but the future stuff is
Roland DII
Sopwith Snipe
Albatros Series
Bristol Scout
AEG GIV
LVG CVI
so those are the ones I have finished and have yet to do for them but I know theres 1 or 2 finished ones I am forgetting abt here. I know the rolands are in the middle of being built right now and I am waiting to see pics. the Pfalz DXII has 2 being built as 1 is early model with different tail feathers and the other is late model. and I know theres 2 Bristol Fighters but not sure if their started yet. the Pfalz and rest will be built once ppl finish up projects they working on currently
so you can see why I dont get much time for building its all drawing 14 hrs a day 6 to 7 days a week hehehe

Hi Tom, it's too bad you don't live our here in LaLa land, you would be working for some movie studio model division at really big bucks. At 83 I have all the work I can handle writing about aircraft. There are folks working out here that wouldn't qualify to hold your monkey wrench. Norm

It's so nice to hear from you. And thanks for the compliments. Yes I do wish I was doing just that, making models for the movies, but like my woman says, you picked your profession. Construction in New England really sucks. And I'm getting too old to be doing what I do. I'm pleased to see your healthy and busy, You were always a charm to see at the events. Days gone by, Good ones. Stay in touch.
