I've been working on the top wing.......I have the left panel almost as far along as the right.
I have made brass hinges and installed them. A little tweaking and they should work just fine.
I also have added the left wing tip and most of the cap stripping......now I need to add it to the wing tip itself.
I am also using the same cap stripping to stiffen the trailing edge of the wing.

RE: 1/3 Scale Nieuport 11
I got tired of not having a plane to fly this summer, so I have been back to the building board.
Here are some pictures......
The aileron needed to be covered as well as the trailing edge of the wing first.
Then the aileron crank (which is 3 laminations) needs to be partially assembled and painted before it is slid over the spar.
The aileron crank box needed to be built and partially covered as well as partially assembled to the wing.
Next I will slide the aileron into the wing positioning the aileron crank into position onto the torque rod. It will then be glued and pinned to the torque rod and the rest of the box will be glued in, capped stripped and final sanded.
Then the wing is ready for covering, I think..........it's like a puzzle. Once I glue on the crank, there is no going back......I will not be able to remove the aileron.
I covered the aileron with one piece of covering......it took a lot of heat to shrink the tip enough to remove all the wrinkles.

The aileron cranks are 3 laminations of 1/32" aircraft plywood.
To improve the glue surface, they will have a 1/8" lite ply donut glued to each side.
First I will need to glue the donuts to the outside of each outside lainate piece.
I will seal the wood with dope and then paint, just the outside of each left and right laminate side piece.
Then work each piece around the spar and epoxy the 3 pieces together.
Next the aileron will slide into place, hinges put in for the final time. The crank will be positioned and glued and pinned to the torque rod.
Remember I said it was a puzzle?!?!?!

Glued the lite ply donuts to the crank pieces.
Then sprayed several light coats of varnish. Tomorrow when it's dry I will paint them.
The two center laminations were not varnished so as to allow the epoxy to soak into them when they are assembled into one piece.

Thanks Jim. The puzzle progresses.....
The aileron cranks are finally slid onto the spars and epoxied together.
I have waffled back and forth on this part of the design........mostly about it (1) will it function properly and (2)will it be strong enough......well, there's no going back now!
Any hoooo......here are some pictures.

step by step......little by little...........another part is added to the airframe.........one day I might wake up and see a finished model (or is that just a dream?)
at any rate, here are a couple pictures of the finished aileron crank, glued and pinned to the torque rod, complete with the box installed and cap stripped.
also at this stage, since the aileron cannot ever again be removed, I installed the hinges and added loc-tite to the bolts.
everything seems to be operating smoothly.....I hope it continues to work this well after the servos/drive rods are installed.....I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Just in case you're interested........a few pics showing how much aileron movement is available in each direction as viewed from the tip and the root.
I didn't measure it, but there is 50% more throw than I will ever need for contest flying........and probably more than I will use even for slam around dog fighting.
The trick here is to get the radio/servo set up to be able to tap into all that movement! I'll check into to that next week after I get the top wing mounted to the fuse (the next major step)
