Thanks Guys!!!
3 wing panels have all 4 coats applied. Will finish up the last panel tonight and get the tail feathers completed tomorrow. I also mixed up some fiberglass resin and repaired the boot cowl. I will work on smoothing it out tomorrow and getting it ready for details.
Later!!

Anthony, I know that you are past the paint cost thing, but what I do when I have unexpected costs.
I just tell myself that at least I don't have to buy a 500.00 set of retracts, extra servos for flaps and an electric actuator for a sliding canopy.
I hope this helps, it does for me.

That is what keeps me from building a 1/5 Warbird, can't get past the cost for a 1/5 plane.

I am over the cost of the paint I am just hoping I don't ruin the paint. That would be my worst nightmare, well right behind crashing the Waco again

All 4 wing panels are now ready for a final sanding and primer. The tail surfaces have 2 coats of polyC appllied and I will sand them in the morning and give them a couple more coats.
Nothing like a 14hr day working on a plane[&o]

I finished up the tail surfaces earlier. They turned out really good.

I am spending alot more time this time around working on the fabric finish. I want the Waco to look better the 2nd time around. I sanded the rudder down after the last coats were good and dry and I think it is really going to look good when the paint goes on. See the attached pics, the surface is very smooth and the detail edges should be subtle.

The boot cowl is getting close. I have another coat of primer on drying now. One more good sanding and should be ready to start masking for the overlap panels.

Looks good Anthony, really good!  So, you mean to say you can make it look better than the first time around?  Of course I haven't seen it in person but that thing looked real good in the photos.  Keep at it (I'm sure you will)!

Take care,
David

Thanks David,
The finish was not as smooth as it will be this time around or as glossy. It will be interesting to see pics of the latex finish versus the Klass Kote finish.

Here is a pic of the Waco at the field minutes before the crash. I like the paint scheme alot.

Anthony, I noticed that you used Gorilla glue and Epoxy in certain high stress areas.
May I ask what you used for the general construction? Thanks for your time..........Ron

Anthony,

I put the wings on fuselage (Barth third scale Waco) yesterday to check the incidences. The parts by themselves don't seem all that big, but together, as you put it, it's a monster. So much so, I kept asking myself what did I get myself into. After shopping for a couple hours, I looked at it and said "I can't way to get this baby in the air.

Beautiful picture Anthony!
I have said it before and I will say it again people, "Please do not stand in the path of the prop when the engine is running"!
I have seen first hand what can happen and believe me it is not pretty!!!

Robert,
Thanks for the voice of concern, although I may not have been in the best place I was a good 8 foot in front of the propellar arch and about that much to the side. The plane is BIG and the angle of the pic makes it look much worse than it was I have been prop bitten by a .40 and there is no way I want that 32" prop getting ahold of me. This thing would remove limbs not just fingers.

wingstrut,
I used alot of wood glue during the build. I prefer to use wood glue when I can. When I need something set up quick I will use CA but I shy away from it as much as possible. There are some instances where CA is the only way to go.

Been working on the boot cowl off and on all weekend. It is pretty much ready for a final sanding then mask off for the panels. Turned out pretty good considering the shape it was in when I started. Tomorrow evening I will start masking.

Should receive the plastic to finish the aileron's by mid week. The list is getting shorter getting this thing ready for paint.
Later!!

I wholeheartedly agree!  Although I've never seen it, I have seen prop let go.  I always stand behind!

By the way Anthony, I agree on the paint scheme.  It looks beautiful!

Anthony, If I hadn't already picked out a paint scheme, I sure would love to use yours, That is gorgeous.

I prefer to use wood glue also, Thanks Anthony.

I don't know what type of prop you are using but in our club we have had a couple of the laminated props come apart, and believe me you can't stand far enough away to be safe.
Start the engine then get behind before revving up.

Now that all of us mother hens have lectured you, Ha!Ha!..................we just want everyone to be safe.

Please be careful flying, I would hate to see something happen to such a gorgeous aircraft..............You should be proud of that build, I hope mine comes out that great.

That was a great picture Anthony, it really shows how big your plane really is. I have no doubt that your re-build will be even better that the first. Nice work....

Ron,
I had a Xoar 32x10 laminated prop on the Waco 1st time around. The Waco will not see another laminated prop. I had one of their 18" laminated props on my Stick 30 and I bumped a blade into my trailer door and heard a pop. I looked at the prop really well and didn't see anything wrong. On the next flight the prop delaminated about 5 minutes into the flight and the severe vibration removed the engine from the plane. I was very lucky, the plane pancacked into a bean field and suffered sprung landing gear and the engine fell into soft dirt from about 125' of altitude. Both the plane and the engine flew the next weekend.

Chuck,
I have a 50oz gas tank for the Waco. I am going to try and fit a 40oz smoke oil tank next to it.

My paint order arrived today from Klass Kote, I ordered a quart of primer and a quart each of Gloss White and Gloss Insigia Blue. I also got a quart of catalyst for each as well as a gallon of reducer. This will help keep me motivated to get the Waco ready for paint.

The plastic for the aileron corrugations also arrived today. I will work on the boot cowl and the aileron's to get them finished up.

Remember Anthony that the white primer with the fast catalyst does not require any induction time unlike your top coat.

I will remember

I think I am about 2 weeks away from being able to switch the room over from building/working to painting mode.

I just masked the 1st areas of the boot cowl and sprayed the 1st coat of hi-fill primer, I had the boot cowl looking good the 1st time around I just hopd I can repeat.

I finished masking and spraying the boot cowl panels. Turned out pretty good. I have one little spot were I bumped the primer I will have to fix. The high fill areas take a bit to gas out and dry.
Didn't get much done on the aileron's as I had to give the remaining 2 another coat of primer and I will start gluing the plastic on tomorrow.

Later!!

Just so you don't think I have stopped.
I have the bottom side left to put the corrugations on one aileron and they will be complete. I will finish that up tomorrow evening. I have alot of little odds and ends to do before I can start spraying primer. Hopefully next week I can call it done and start spraying primer.

It's all in the details and the details slow you down.

Yes those details do slow you down  Anthony, but the details are what people see. Even if they don't see them. She will be a work of art again. And with any restoration/rebuild, second time is better.
Can't wait to see it in paint again.

Hi Guys,
Not much Waco news today, today is my birthday well sort of. I was born on the 29th and I get shorted this year

I came home from work today and the wife had my birthday present waiting for me, a Sig 1/3 scale Spacewalker kit I made mention a couple weeks ago that I liked the plane and low and behold she was actually listening.

I also get a nice crab leg dinner so no work on the Waco tonight. Once the Waco is complete I will start on the Spacewalker one rainy day.

Was going to upload a pic but the pic post is down again[:@]

Happy Birthday Anthony!

Everytime I mention a plane that I like, I get nothing. Well, until I order it myself!
