A Moki would be sweet. Maybe one of these days I can swap out my 3W-157 for a Moki 250. The 3W is actually more power than the Waco needs and the Moki sounds soooooo good

Off to out club meeting!!

I'm sure the 215 and 250 are more than enough! I'm sure the 150 would be just right for scale. I'll post a couple pics soon. Just glued in the aluminum brackets then I'll do the webbing tonight. I just want to get to the fuselage - those pieces are sweet!

The fuse is fun once you get the box strutcure completed and the cabane wires installed to the top center section. The formers and stringers bring it to life.

Do yourdself a favor and sand the corners off the outside of the stringers before installation. I will show you what I mean and how I do this next week. It makes the job of sanding the fuse for covering preperation much easier.

Strange, I did not get notified of your last post Anthony. Any tips will be appreciated. I will post my weeks' progress tomorrow likely.

Iflytailies - I will definitely consider your panels in the not too distant future

Cheers

Lins,
Looking forward to seeing the pics.

Iflytailies , your panel looks really nice but my Waco is modeled after an original 1935 version and I already have a panel to suit.

I received my wood order from National Balsa yesterday. A few of the sticks had some bad splits near the ends but they are usable as I have to cut some down anyways. I sanded one side of the stringers to put a slight radius on and I am installing the stringers now. It took about 4.5 hrs to sand all the stringers while I was watching football yesterday.

I will post some pics later!!

I hate sanding, I was a hand finisher for 5 yrs working on aerospace parts. Try sanding every day for a living[:@]

I only have 5 more stringers to go and the fuselage will be round again I have been trying to minimize my use of CA glue on the Waco. All the formers and stringers have been applied with wood glue. I am sure the CA will come out at some point.

Well all the stringers are on now. Finally starting to look like a Waco again.

After hunting tomorrow I will start fitting the fiberglass hood and working on the wing fairing bases. I no longer have the templates so this will be an edventure.
Here are a couple pics.

My one week progress... Unfortunately it's back to the cub mostly for now. It will be hard staying away from this kit, though, it is a real pleasure to build.

Also, I notice on page 3, your aluminum brackets on the front spar are opposite of what my instructions specify. I have the double hole bracket in front of the spar, and the single hole bracket behind it. That has me nervous

Lins,
I just checked the pics on page 3 and the 3 hole bracket is behind the front spar. Take a look again the bracket is on the side of the spar facing the rear spar.

Your wing is looking good. The aileron's can be a bit tricky to get the sheeting correct at the tips.

Off to the woods for hunting!

Lol, did you mean 3 or 2 hole? The instructions I have show the front spar aluminum brackets opposite of what your picture shows - 2 hole in front of the spar, and 1 hole behind the spar, or facing the rear spar. Just wondering if it makes any difference with the flying wires in the end. Cheers.

Well evidently it doesn't
I will have to go back and check the directions against what I have. I didn't have any issues hooking up my flying wires and never noticed the discrepency.

No luck hunting this morning so I am back on the Waco. I am working on installing the sheeting on the fuse over the gear plate. I did just notice that the landing gear was bent just a little on the right gear leg. It has moved out about 3/8". I will try to bend it back if I can if not I will go with it as it is. I just set the fuse up on the gear and you really can't see it.

I am also going to work on mounting the boot cowl today. Fitting all the fiberglass items takes some time.
Later!!

That's one thing I hate! Something that's a little off and it's likely nobody will ever notice, but I know it's there! "Hmmm... fix it or leave it...?"

The fix is not easy by any means. I may try and take the gear into work and bolt it down to a good strong table and grab the bent leg where the axle goes thru with a clamp and something substantial to try and bend the leg back. If I am not careful I will destroy the belly fairing as well as the leg fairing in the process.
The landing gear are water jet from 3/8" thick aluminum and machine pressed and are very stout. I am very surprised it bent in the 1st place.

I just trial fit the boot cowl and it looks like it is going to mount up just fine.

Later!!

Thought about it David but why punish the dogs for a bad owner

Last day off work so I am making the most of it on the Waco. I had been dreading making the wing fairing bases since I did not have the templates. The directions show using 2 templates so I made my own template from corrugated cardboard and made one template. I think it turned out better then the 1st time I built the fuse. The fairing base gets mostly covered up but it gives you a good attachment point for the covering and the fairing and it helps support the 3/32 wing saddle.

I will wait until after covering to add the wing saddle as it also gets bonded to the wing fairing and without the wing fairing in place the saddle is very weak and Murpy's Law will come into play and I will break it a half dozen times before I am done.

Now off to add the other side.

Lins,
In the pics in the previous post you will notice I sheeted from the back of the wing saddle to the next former on the bottom of the fuse. This is not in the directions and it gives you a good base for adding the bottom wing fairing which also ties into the upper side wing fairing. Tring to do this over and open structure and getting the fairing to blend right with the fuse and covering would be a nightmare if not impossible. I used 1/8" sheeting and cut the stringers down to account for the sheeting. The majority of this will be covered by the fairings so you do not need to get it perfect.

I now have both side complete on the fairing bases. I have alot of filler pieces to add for covering and I need to fit the top fiberglass hood and add the screw holes for mounting. The fiberglass hood is mounted with screws only so it can be removed for maintenance. Comes in really handy when batteries need replaced and or fuel tank maintenance. I also plan on adding a smoke pump after the initial flights.

Later!!

That came out sweet Anthony. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to stay home (after retirement) and work on your planes? I think about it all the time now,I've got another six years.
