Gear Update.
Finally have a gear complete enough to mount to the fuselage. Still have some of the plates to solder on but my next step is to permanently mount the hardwood gear blocks in the fuselage and mount the gear with 4-40 bolts and blind nuts. Then cover the fuselage. Larry |

Turtle Report:
I got the aileron extensions soldered onto the ailerons. Anytime I have a long run for an extension and especially when the plug is hidden out in the wing, I solder the connection. By design our servo plugs are self cleaning - just the act of plugging and unplugging the extensions keep them clean. When they are buried inside the airplane are not unplugged on a regular basis corrosion will build up and there will be a voltage drop to the servo........eventually it will become erratic and loose much of its strength. At least that has been my experience over the years. I spent much of today soldering, installing and adjusting my aileron servos. I also screwed on the control horns and made the push rods. I have a new radio - a Futaba 8FG. It has a touch sensor wheel for programming and a much different layout of menus than my old Futaba 7C........most of this time was spent learning how to use this new system. I'm getting there - S L O W L Y Speaking of slow........... Larry, the Nats are only two weeks away and your entry must be received and processed by July 10th. Your gear is looking pretty good. |

Bring a plane and enjoy the hospitality of the Ohio Dawn Patrol. (Hopefully Larry will chime in here and give a proper answer) I can guarantee that you will have a great time! Plus there will be 3 of the Eindeckers at that event....you might get a chance to fly a lap or 2 around the field with one of them[X(] Cheers, Art |

Several of us are planing for the 2014 event now! Hopefully kits might be available before then? LOL I can't make it this year unfortunately.<div>

The "LIST" grows shorter!
I got a couple more items scratched off the list........rudder and elevator hinges are epoxied on ........... There are some items that aren't needed before the maiden flight - my plan is to maiden the Eindecker sometime this weekend. Don't know where yet or when.......a lot depends on the weather - we have a chance of showers every day thru next Tuesday........and when I get her flyable! |
RE: Eindecker EIII
ORIGINAL: R/C Art BACK TO THE BUILD Turtle Report: I got a couple of things done this evening, but I can't quite remember what it was....... ......let me look at the list [:-]- oh ya, the tail skid is glued, bolted and bungeed and the axels have a slight groove (made with the Dremel cut off disk). The set screw engages that groove - the loc tite keeps the set screw in place and my wheels don't fall off on the maiden flight (do you hear me Barry?) The maiden might be sometime over the 4th of July weekend - Sir Percy, is there a convenient time and place for a video? Yo no hablo ingles!!!....;) |

RE: Eindecker EIII
This was supposed to be a mechanical option and the gear was supposed to be a jettison style dolly just like the ME163 Komet.........only part of it worked.....:eek:didn't you guys know this was designed and tested in WW1??....I do have to admit that is a perfect departure talk about perfect timing....

Work continues on the big Eindecker.........
.........the control cables to the tail are now complete - servo arms screwed to the servos and the Sullivan clevises are secured with their special keepers. All control surfaces are a go. I am using nylon coated steel fishing leader for the control cables. ........tank, throttle control rod, receiver battery and gluing in the anti-rotation dowels are next on the list. That leaves fuel proofing the firewall, re-installing the engine and mounting the cowl to do - after which it will be ready for the maiden flight. |
RE: Eindecker EIII
Tank is done - battery installed - kill switch installed - cowl mounted.
Need to mount the engine, fit throttle control push rod and glue in the anti rotation dowels in the wing root ribs. THEN I GO FLY THIS AFTERNOON! maybe around 4 or 5.......will try to get some video. |

Here are pictures of the last few items needed for flight.......
tank is in - cowl is on - battery & throttle servo installed and adjusted. Loaded her up in the van and headed out to the flying field! Put her together, fueled her up and then the engine coughed to life. It hadn't been run for 3 years or so at least. The engine is a Zenoah 445 with an exhaust flange and muffler torn away from the forward jug.......it was crashed on 1/3 scale Nieuport 17 when the radio apparently went into failsafe.......this was the engine that I flew my old 1/3 scale Eindecker (the one with wing warping and a full flying stab) The engine ran fine......prop was a Zinger 26x8.....performance was adequate......plenty for sport flying, but not much vertical. Video was shot, but we cannot download it yet.......hope to have something in a couple of days. A proper flight report and some stills from the first flight will follow when time allows. oh, by the way........balance is on the wing tube without any added nose weight........weight is 40 pounds......if the other muffler could have been attached it would have weighted 40 lbs and 12 ozs. |

looks like and Eindecker,eh? setting up for first landing pass - just getting a feel for the sink rate
|
RE: Eindecker EIII
Ok Where to begin? Wind was light, maybe 2 to 4 mph, coming in from 5 to10 degrees from cross from the left.....not enough to even consider.
Take off was straight forward and a little sooner than expected.....plenty of power available for lift off.....climbed substantially so I added some down trim. Plane was crabbing to the left, hollering for some added right rudder which straightened her right up.......I should have held it much longer, even after the plane was airborne. Level fight was established......then the hunt for the proper wings level trim settings.......added some aileron trim, maybe a little rudder trim.......never was satisfied with those settings.........I think the plane set up (flying wires & right thrust, maybe lateral balance) needs some more attention.....another factor may have been more crossing winds aloft than I felt on the ground. Elevator seems effective without being too sensitive........rudder is very effective, I might consider reducing the throw from all I can get without hitting the elevators to a little bit less. Ailerons are somewhat effective, some of which is the result overall design of the Eindecker, and some is because of a very large flat bottomed wing.......I have about 2&1/2 inches of up aileron and about 1+ inches of down travel.........I might play with those throws to see if it changes the roll rate any. The airplane is definitely a rudder ship.......the fuselage wallows when just aileron and elevator is used for turns......lays on its side, sometimes nose high and sometimes nose low. To properly fly this model the rudder must be mastered........in fact, it might be better to fly the rudder as the primary turn control rather than the ailerons......and just use aileron to bring the wings back to level as the turn is completed. It is definitely an interesting model to fly. |

Pictures, we need some pictures here........as you can see, once it broke ground it climbed rather sharply to altitude.

lets see if I can find some flight shots
On the first flight early on the throttle linkage came loose.....it was at a couple of 3 clicks above idle.......I thought about climbing up and just tooling around, but then the engine slowed some and altitude was bleeding off.......the idle was still a little high for landing, but as you can see, the landing was without incident. more later.... |
RE: Eindecker EIII
Beautiful plane Art. Very nice looking in the air. Looking forward to seeing you and Rhonda in Muncie.

ORIGINAL: tevans55 Beautiful plane Art. Very nice looking in the air. Looking forward to seeing you and Rhonda in Muncie. Just a thought here, but with that longer cowl which I used (because of my engine choice) this could be morphed into an EIV very easily. The EIV had a twin row rotary which required a longer cowl among other mods....... |

Thanks Paul - I am very much looking forward to the Ohio Dawn Patrol. It is on my list of "Always Attend" events.....along with the Hoosier Dawn Patrol in August.
Hey! Check it out! I now have a pilot! |
RE: Eindecker EIII
Excellent Job Art!:D Looks great in the air. Have Great Flying Season.
See you at Dayton 2014? Rich |
RE: Eindecker EIII
Hi Art,
Been following your build nearly daily. Congrats on the successful maiden. It looks really good, especially seeing it break gravity :) They do fly better with a pilot in the cockpit though. I actually have a friend who will not test fly without a pilot (superstitious I guess?) Concerning the flight characteristics, my BUSA Eindecker likes rudder first then Aileron, yet in a turn you are actually cross controlling. Cindy and I are making tentative plans to attend ODP. Calm Winds, Mike |
RE: Eindecker EIII
Hi Mike
I certainly hope you and Cindy can make it down to the ODP........it would be great seeing you guys again! Thanks and yes, to make good turns both aileron and rudder turn in the direction of the turn and then cross control the ailerons to make it smooth........or sometimes just a rudder turn with cross control of the ailerons.......I don't have enough time on it yet to decide which is better or the conditions where one or the other is the better way....... I'll figure it out in another couple dozen or so flights (I hope). For the most part, I think I will fly it like a rudder ship and use aileron to keep the wings level. (it sure did look naked without a pilot) (even an unfinished pilot is better than none at all) Cheers, Art |
RE: Eindecker EIII
Congratulations Art! It feels great to get that first successful flight behind you. I was hoping you would leave the pilot out so i could file a protest..... :D just kidding of course.

RE: Eindecker EIII
Thanks Steve - I was more anxious on this maiden flight than I have been on any of the past couple maidens that I have done - go figure?!
(my realism score would suffer without my anemic pilot) Thanks Dale - haven't heard from you for a while - are you gonna fly up to the ODP in your N-17? I have been following your thread, but it has been quiet for a while........I admire your ability to jump in and learn how and then build a full scale airplane. It is looking very good so far! |

The very first third scale plane I ever saw was your old Eindecker (back then it was new!). Nice to see you with another Eindecker! Greg |
