Thanks Neil. That was just a quick and dirty with no real post-processing.

Here's a couple more from yesterday...

Hi TJ,

The F100 looks superb, mate. Now, that could quite easily be the real thing.

It also shows how far RC scale modeling has come in the last 2-3 decades. Can you imagine taking a model like that to a ScaleMaster's meet back in the 60's?

Thanks guys. It's nice to be at a contest with such worthy subjects. (I've been pretty envious of you Neil. It seems that large scale meets are prolific in your area ;))

Of course the setting here is also superb. What better place for a Scale Jet contest than at an Air Force base. The backgrounds really support the illusion.

Hi TJ,

I think you probably have quite a lot more shows on your side of the 'Pond' than we do - just that you've got a slightly bigger area to cover than here on Island UK:)

Anyway, can't let you get away with those superb pictures without chucking in one of my own;)

OK. That's officially the Best Photo On This Thread. And I don't even particularly like Corsairs! Was this taken at 10,000ft over the Pacific? ;)

I had gotten one similar to that a few years ago, but not quite as sharp. Great shot! ;)

In the spirit of one-upsmanship, here is one for today...

Tango Juliet posted an excellent example. However,:D in my most humble opinion, it needs a more ("scale") foreground:).
The first picture is the original by; ( Tango Juliet ) ...then, only because I was bored, I chose various foregrounds. Take your pick.

Number two does it for me. Well 'shopped'[8D]

rcphotog - I'd accept any one of those re-touched photos. Well done.[sm=thumbup.gif]

Of the, literally, hundreds of photos I've taken this week, I just haven't had the time to do more post-processing than a simple crop and levels adjustment. When I return home next week, I'll be spending all my available time to processing these images more for my website along with writing an article for 'Model Aviation' magazine.

Hello,

that's amazing! those foregrounds turn a great model into a full size aircraft! I had never thought of that. so I learned something. Thank's much!

Hey "Spuetz",

Thanks for your comments and I'm glad that someone understands what I was trying to accomplish.;)

I think that the foreground can ( make or break ) the photo's illusion. It's just as important as the backround but most people don't give it much attention.

The problem: when we kneel down or lay down in order to get the "correct-scale" height / angle on the model, that puts the camera ( and the viewer ) too low to the ground for "scale" effect.

The solution: either merge two photos ( composite ) as I did or take two photos of the model, one looking down on the model from normal standing height and then one from a "scale" position either kneeling or laying down and then use those two images as a compostite.

Example: first, position model ( on grass, dirt or asphalt ) to your preference. With camera blocking completed from a "scale" height, take the shot. Then stand up and take another shot of the model incorporating as much foreground as possible from that higher position.

Now you have two photos of the same model with the same sun angle that you can blend / merge / composite together ( reguires some kind of photoshop software and the skill and patience to master ) with the subject in the top half and the "scale-height" foreground in the bottom half.

This technique should be of particular help for models photographed on grass.

I hope this helps. Give it a try.;)
Ken.

Obviously Photoshop is a wonderful tool to blend images together. On the other hand, foreground asphalt that is way out of focus telegraphs the scale reality to the viewer.
It is important to close down the lens aperture to get the best possible depth of field, which will help eliminate that totally out of focus ground plane. Not that complicated.

Hi Allan,

Yes I agree, however, my post is intended to help those who use "point-n-shoot" cameras that don't allow for stepping down the aperture;)

And if using a DSLR, you will still have an issue of non-scale grass in the foreground, only now it will be sharply in focus.:D

Ken.

ps; I've added an example of what I enjoy doing to model photos to give them a more endearing quality. In My opinion.:D.....besides, it's FUN !!!

Before and after. The color photo was made on Fuji 50asa slide film with a Nikon FM-2 and a 28mm wide angle lens. I recently projected it onto white-board and took a photo with my old HP 3mp point-n-shoot camera - producing an unflattering low-res image. ( I don't own a slide scanner [:o] )

I wanted to make something special and unique for the owner / builder of the model ( Fred Reese kit 72" ) so I tried to replacate an image of the past:)

So for those interested in something a little more than mere scale-model photography, I offer this as an example of what a little imagination can do.:D:D:D

He means to say that this isn't a thread to show off your scale model. While it is nice, this thread is for images of planes that look like they could be real, if not entirely indistinguishable from a real plane. Basically, your pictures are of a scale airplane, but not ones in which it looks real.
