Cam, thanks for the decriptions! I'd love to see some close-ups of your weathering. When I did my EIII I was totally new to weathering and all I did was dab on some thin "dirty" wash (of latex). It got rid of that "brand-spanking-new" model looks but didn't really go far enough.

Cam, It might not be master scale but geez it sure looks the part![8D]

I have been an E-III fan for many years and have enjoyed building and flying the BUSA 90 size as well as a scatch 1/4 scale but neither were truely scale. I have been looking for some time for a truely scale E-III kit to build and it appears that the Proctor kit is the only one that fills the bill with regard to scale. Has anyone out there built and flown the Proctor kit and if so could they please supply some info with regard to flying characteristics, finished weight etc? Thanks in advance for any info.

Great look models. I haven't built the Proctor EIII kit myself but if they are anything like their other kits it will be great. Also don't balk at the wing-warping it is not as bad as some people make out!

Mustang-man, how do you think the Eindecker 80 would fly on a Saito 82? I've got one sitting around.

RE: Eindeckers anyone

ABU,
It will fly great. My BUSA 80" was powered at different times with a Saito 80 and a Saito 91 and both supplied more than enough power. I prefered the 80 for scale purposes.
Breguet,
Thanks.I am not at all concerned with the wing warping aspect of the Proctor kit because both the planes in my last post were built with 0 degrees dihedral and both turned very well with rudder only. As a matter of fact the 1/4 scale scratch built would demonstrate a great deal of adverse yaw if aileron turns were attempted without rudder input. One of my favorite things was to do "flat" turns by applying rudder and opposite aileron. Both these models would turn very quickly during this manouver. I have wished many times that I would have "blocked out" the ailerons on both these models when they were built but I didn't find out until after that they would turn as well as they did without aileron input.

Hey feep,
what did you set your throws at on your eindecker? Just now got around to installing my DX7 but the throws recommended seem so small. 3/4" on hi rate elev. and 1/2" lo rate? Elev. barely moves compared to my other planes. I'm probably wrong but have to ask.

My throws on the elevator were tricky, but I had a full flying elevator. Did you do yours that way or stock? My throws were very small and the elevator was very responcive.

Same here. Though I have more up (which is used expotentially) to keep the tail on the ground when taxi-ing.

Mine is strictly stock. I realize it's a large elevator but 3/4" +or- just looks small and 1/2" on lo rate looks like it hardly moves.

Don't forget you also have a large moment arm - that amount of movement should be fine IMHO.

Hi Guys,

Just finishing a few little details before ready to test fly my SR one. Couple of questions for those who've built the SR kit:

1. How did it balance with a G26 Zenoah in it?

2. How did you modify the flying wires to avoid them snagging the tyres on bumpy landings?

I've also encountered an odd problem where the front flying wires rub on the front U/C struts - when I made the U/C I obviously angled it a little too far forwards - the instructions were a bit vauge on that step. I'll just put some discrete clear tape on the front of the struts for now.

Cheers,

Cam

RE: Eindeckers anyone

Cam, I ran across this "geometry" problem with the wires and UC on my EIII. It comes from going "semiscale." That is, I moved the wings into a scale position and had a totally scale UC -- but I used the non-scale BUSA wings which has spars (and thus attachment points) in a non-scale location (too far back). I believe this is what caused the problem of the wires hitting the wheels.

But it wasn't a problem on the few flights I had on it as it doesn't weigh very much and landings were very very light anyway.

BTW, good luck on the maiden and let us know how it went!

Here are a few of my kit bashed BUSA E-III to an E-IV. Full flying rudder and elevator. Smaller than stock, but still a bit on the large size. Wimped out and stuck with aeilerons though (strictly a sorta scale fun fly plane). These pics were taken about 5 weeks back. Sorry to say no progress has been made since. It will be powered by a Saito .80.

Watch out for adverse yaw. I found that when I went to a full flying rudder I had to reduce my rudder to scale dimensions to illeviate the problem.

Hey Guys, I've been thinking of purchasing an Eindecker E1 from BP Hobbies. Has anyone else purchased this model from them? I have done a search here and I can't find anything on BP Hobbies. They used to be Balsa Products and changed their name for some reason. Just trying to find out any info I can about them. Here is the link to the E1. http://www.bphobbies.com/view.asp?id=V135039

Thanks in advance you guys. Ben

Thanks Fokker Ace! Actually, it's my understanding that the three gun EIV was only briefly tested, and found to adversely effect the flying performance (already marginal) such that it was not deemed practical. It would look cool though! :)

I have just finished my SRB E1 kit, I took it to the field to do the madden flight last night and to take a few pictures. It was too windy to do the madden but I did take a few pictures. I have done the color scheme in a Turkish Pattern.

Did you modify the landing gear support plate at the A frame for your wing wires? That doesn't look like the SR design. Engine? Let us know how the maiden goes.

Thought I'd give this old post a bump with some pics of my (finally) completed EIV. Flies pretty darn well I think for a kit bashed project. Seems to roll like a pig though at this time (not like my previous BUSA Eindecker), but I will work that out. While still not very scale, I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Decided to go with the three gun after all. Just too cool!

Brequet...
Can you post how you did the wing warping... I'm thinking of building the Aerodrome RC EIII and converting from Electric to Glow... It has the undercambered airfloil , full flying surfaces and from I understand from the company, a very very close to exact scale outline at 1/6. However it uses strip ailerons hinged at the top in order to better hide this shortcoming. I would like to try wing warping to have a "truly" scale model.

Any pics, descriptions woulid be most appreciated. My main concern is how to build a wing that's allowed to twist? After studying various documentation, I believe I understand how the cabling provides the twisting motion.

I'm new to this thread. Nice work you guys!

Re the Proctor E-III, it's a great flying model, as I suspect most of the model versions are. I'm building a new one right now to replace one that was lost in a crash (mysterious radio problem..).

The first one weighed about 20lbs, I think. It flew well on an OS 1.20 Surpass. My new one will use a Moki 2.1.

Don, I agree about how 'fragile' looking the E-III really is. It's difficult to capture this in model form using conventional modeling materials. I am trying, however. I've substituted carbon and aluminum tube in some places to help put her on a diet.

From Post #5.... How many degress movement do you estimate your getting from the horiztonatal and vertical arrangementd you have? The rudimentary pic may help depict what I'm asking?

On downsizing the rear spar... What does anyone think about in the outer bays, maybe half way out, running the spar (cf rod?) through a bushing in each rib, to allow easier twisting?
